Workshop Synopsis: Proper
vacuum pump selection and
care can mean the difference
between years of effective
service life and an expensive
paperweight. To protect
your investment, you want to
ensure you’re providing the
conditions to maximize the
service life. This workshop
will review aspects important
to the long term perfor-
mance of your vacuum pump.
This will include everything
from choosing the correct
new pump and system com-
ponents for your application
to basic repairs and mainte-
nance for heavily used
pumps.

Science Educator’s Workshop Winners Announced By Corinne D’Ambrosio
AVS has conducted a two-day in-service workshop on low-pressure experiments and modeling for middle and high school science teach-
ers from the United States and Canada since 1990. The SCCAVS sponsors a number of local teachers each year to attend the workshop
from schools here in Southern California. The next workshop will be held on November 6th to 8th in Nashville, Tennessee during the
AVS 63rd International Symposium & Equipment Exhibition.
The workshop is accredited for CEU's and is aligned with the National Science and Mathematics standards. The program is divided into
two parts: (1) lectures on the underlying science and mathematical calculations and (2) hands-on experience in which a group of teachers
perform experiments and develop models under the guidance of an instructor team. Upon completion of the workshop, teachers re-
ceive a vacuum system for their school identical to ones used in the workshop.
This year the Southern California Chapter of the AVS will be sending two teachers to Nashville. The first is Russell Cramm of Downey
High School. He teaches college prep to grades 10-12. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Califor-
nia, Los Angeles. With 25 years teaching high school chemistry, honors chemistry, AP chemistry, and earth science, as well as 4 years
teaching chemistry and physics at the community college level, he brings considerabe experience to the SEW. Russell has been a mentor/
lead teacher for 10 years.
The second teacher chosen to attend the SEW in Nashville this year is Kristy Mar of JH Hull Middle School in Torrance. She currently
teaches life and physical science to grades 7 and 8. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biological Science in 2010 from California
State University in Fullerton. Since then she has participated in the Aquarium of the Pacific/NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Instrument-
ed Earth Workshop, Lunar Meteorite Sample Disk Certification, Boeing Teacher Institute, and Space Camp Academy for Educators. She
has been awarded grants from the Aquarium of the Pacific, and is an avid participant in both marathon and triathlon events throughout
California.
If you know of a teacher in Southern California that would be a good candidate for next year’s Science Educator’s Workshop, please
encourage them to apply online at http://www.avs.org/Education-Outreach/Science-Educators-Workshop
