Fiber in the Sky

The SkyLaser line from ComNet consists of an easy-to-install, pre-packaged point-to-point kit

that contains everything you need to establish a fully symmetrical gigabit Free Space Optical

link. Two kits are available, supporting transmission distances up to 1,500 meters.

Unlike the diminishing throughput of an RF wireless system, SkyLaser units support full duplex

gigabit throughput up to the maximum operating range. There is no degradation in system

performance due to external noise or radar transmission. The industrially hardened units with

gigabit Ethernet interfaces offer the options to be powered by a PoE switch or the supplied

mid-span power injector.

These pre-configured environmentally hardened kits include everything you need to install and connect them.

These Free Space Optical products offer the same practical bandwidth as fiber optic transmission without the installation costs associated with trenching new optical fiber.

The SkyLaser kit transmits a full duplex gigabit Ethernet data stream up to 1500 meters between a pair of aligned SkyLaser Free Space Optical (FSO) devices. An integrated scope supports rough scale alignment with easy-to-read visual indicator LEDs showing the accuracy of the alignment. Fine-scale alignment is then adjusted via the included web server interface at the install location to maximise link performance.

Technical CentreAll SkyLaser topologies are point-to-point due to the nature and operation of the system. It operates similar to a length of cable connecting two Ethernet devices. You can build different topologies using Ethernet switches and using the SkyLaser system to connect the switches.

The units themselves operate as Layer 1 point-to-point Ethernet connecting devices. There are two physical connections on all SkyLaser products. The first is the data connection and the second connection supports the power and out-of-band management interface. This dual port operation provides a further level of security by keeping the data the device is carrying separated from the management port.

Environmental Conditions Like any other wireless system, SkyLaser can be affected by the local environmental conditions. The throughput of the system does not degrade but if the environmental effect is great enough, then the link may drop. The major issue is fog, as the dense water molecules in the sky absorb or refract Laser energy, preventing the transmitted beam from reaching the receiver.

When visibility is low, the SkyLaser performance is still twice that of a human in the same conditions. If, on a fog-bound morning, the human eye is able to see 100 meters the Free Space Optics system would see approximately 200 meters.

To provide high speed redundancy, and provide continuous operation in dense fog, a microwave redundant path can be configured.

Using the ComNet CNGE2+2SMS switch in Redundant SFP (RSFP) mode, the Free Space Optic link acts as the primary and the microwave link the backup with a fail-over time of <1 second. The ComNet NetWave® NWK9[E] kit should be used as the backup microwave link to provide as much throughput as possible.

The NetWave® NWKSP2 Solar off the grid power system is designed for applications where

a remote camera or wireless repeater is needed but power is not available or the cost to run

power is too expensive. NetWave Solar is a complete system for providing remote power to

edge communications equipment. The kit includes high quality photovoltaic solar panels,

valve-regulated lead-acid battery, outdoor enclosure, solar charge controller, PoE midspan

injector and mounting hardware. The steel outdoor enclosure has a gasket hinged lid with two

tamper proof locks operated by a special key for high security. The enclosure can be mounted

on a two to four inch pole or wall mounted with the included mounting hardware. The Solar

Panels include a top of pole mount requiring a 4” diameter pole. A side of pole mount is

available as an optional accessory. The included 30A solar charge controller supports an LCD

screen for local diagnostics and system health monitoring, Intelligent PWM charging mode and

battery protection from overcharge and over discharge while the battery provides outstanding

deep cycle and cold weather performance.

The FSO1GLR is a full duplex 1Gbps Free Space Optical link that supports wire

speed transmission over distances up to 1.5km. The units are designed for

operation in non-conditioned temperature environments and are supplied with

mounting hardware for quick and simple installation. Four integrated LASER

transmitters provide high level availability and the integrated optical alignment

scope provides for rapid deployment and quick course alignment which can then

be fine tuned using high precision electronic stepper motors from any remote

location as required. The technology offers very low latency and high security

making the units a true alternative to fiber. There is no licensing required on a

global basis. An optional autonomous alignment feature is available to provide

automatic compensation for slow building or mast movements due to temperature

fluctuations etc.

The units feature an out-of-band web management interface for increased security

along with SNMP capability for remote diagnosis and monitoring.

Operating as true layer 1 devices the FSO1GLR units are transparent to all Ethernet

protocols and can be used to create any kind of network topology such as linear,

ring and mesh simply by adding standard managed switches to interconnect the

Free Space Optical devices.

Optional heavy duty mounting brackets for many different applications are also

available including wall and pedestal designs.

ComNet Solar kits provide remote power to networked edge equipment, and include a high quality photovoltaic solar panel, outdoor enclosure with gasketed hinged lid and two tamper proof locks, power controller with integrated power injection module, all the mounting hardware and is available with or without sealed lead acid batteries. The equipment can be mounted to a two-to-four inch (five to ten centimeter) pole or to a wall with the included mounting hardware. The included controller protects against overcharge and over discharge while optional high performance batteries give the best available deep discharge and temperature performance.
