Dry Skin Basics

Xeroderma is the uncommon Greek name for the common problem we know as dry skin. Dry skin is defined by the Mayo Clinic as

- A feeling of skin tightness, especially after showering, bathing or swimming - Skin that appears shrunken or dehydrated - Skin that feels and looks rough rather than smooth - Itching that may sometimes be intense - Slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling - Fine lines or cracks - Redness - Deep fissures that may bleed

Dry skin can come and go, or it may become chronic. With the tips in this guide, you can work pro-actively to minimize occasional dry skin episodes and keep them from becoming something worse.

11 Common Causes of Dry Skin

“Why me?” you ask when your skin feels dry, flaky, and covered in tiny cracks. Age lines look deeper. Skin has a flat, matte look. If someone were to look at you under a micro-scope they’d think they were looking at a parched patch of the Sahara.

“What did I do to deserve this?” You ask your-self. The answer is complicated. You may have dry skin for a variety of reasons, some of your own doing, others that are a matter of time and circumstance.

Before you can treat dry skin properly, you need to know what’s causing it. Check out this list of dry skin causes and see which ap-ply to you. (It’s likely that you’ll find a combi-nation of factors that you can relate to.)

1. Mother Nature: Living in a dry climate such as the Arizona desert leeches moisture from the skin

2. Father Time - As we age, our body’s cov-ering becomes thinner. It loses its ability to retain moisture, too.

Page 9: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

3. Old Man Sol - Sun is notoriously punish-ing to skin

4. The Big City – Living in an urban envi-ronment can expose you to air pollution and environmental toxins like second-hand smoke that dry skin

5. Unnatural Temperatures – Central heating, wood-burning stoves, air conditioner units, space heaters and even romantic fire-places suck the humidity out of the air and out of your skin

6. Double-Dipping – Pools have high lev-els of chlorine that sanitizes the water, but dries out the skin of frequent swimmers

7. Lack of Water – It sounds simplistic, but it’s completely true. An alarming number of Americans are dehydrated and it shows in their skin.

8. Too Much of the Wrong Foods - As protein consumption rises, hydration rates decrease. Too much fiber may also be a cul-prit as it pulls water as it travels through your intestines. Similarly, foods that are high in

“I keep my skin - especially on my face and neck - out of the sun. My brother died of melanoma eight years ago. It makes you real-ize, the sun is a wonderful thing, but it can be a very devastating thing. So sun-screen is key, and a lot of laughter, too.” -- Giada De Laurentiis

“I use products from my derma-tologist, but the best things you can do for your skin are not to smoke, always use sunscreen, and drink a lot of water.” -- Sela Ward, Actress

simple sugars may lead to dehydration, due to the amount of water the body uses to me-tabolize these sugars.

9. A Water-Based Career - Nurses, hair stylists, life guards, and kitchen staff immerse their skin in water throughout the day which causes the skin to become raw, and cracked.

10. Chemical Ingredients in Make-up and Skincare Products – Cosmetics, in-cluding those labeled “natural,” frequently contain skin-drying ingredients that are gen-erally unhealthy for your body.11. Emotion Overload - Stress can dry out your skin, so can weeping, even if it’s the happy kind. (Those pesky little tears are so salty!)

With so many things conspiring against your skin, it’s no wonder that so many people have to cope with this problem. But if you keep reading this guide, you won’t have to be one of them!

tion, there are times when dry skin re-quires a medical approach. For example, people who had eczema (atopic dermati-tis) when they were young tend to have dry skin as adults.

Psoriasis also causes very dry skin, and hypothyroidism reduces the activity of the body’s sweat and oil gland which can lead to rough, dry skin.

Most cases of dry skin respond well to lifestyle and home remedies. But the Mayo Clinic says see your doctor if:

• Your skin doesn’t improve in spite of your best efforts• Dry skin is accompanied by redness• Dryness and itching interfere with sleeping• You have open sores or infections from scratching• You have large areas of scaling or peel-ing skin

Okay! Enough of about the causes of dry skin; what about the solution?

No “magic pill,” “secret potion,” or “enchant-ed elixir” has yet been found that can give us baby soft skin forever. However, while it may not be possible to achieve flawless skin for a lifetime, the following five easy, all-natural skin care strategies can help keep your skin moist and radiant regardless of how old you are.

Step 1 - Drink Often, But Drink Right

Most health experts are now recommending that you drink half your body weight in ounc-es of water every day. If you’re 200 pounds, that’s 100 ounces of water. That’s 12.5 cups or 3 quarts, 4 ounces of water. Pure water is your best choice, but fruit juices and herbal teas are great, too.

Alcohol is a diuretic and causes more fre-quent trips to the bathroom. This can dehy-drate you by causing you to lose fluid more quickly than normal. But don’t despair. You don’t have to give up wine and spirits. But if you do enjoy an alcoholic beverage, be sure to drink additional water with it to replace any lost fluids.

“I think women should start to embrace their

age. I can’t change the day

I was born. But I can take care of

my skin, my body, my mind, and try

to live my life and be happy.” –

Olivia Munn, Actress

“A bit of lusting after someone does wonders for the skin.”-- Elizabeth Hurley, Actress

Caffeine is a diuretic also, but you would have to down between four and seven cups of a caffeinated drink per day for it to affect your fluid levels. Caffeine lurks in coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks, so you may be con-suming more of it than you think.

And by the way, the “cup” that we mentioned in the first sentence refers to a 6-ounce cup. A Starbucks Venti is 20 ounces. Think what that much caffeine is doing to your skin!

Step 2 - Eat Smart

For this step, we’re going to turn to some well-known celebrities to add their personal anecdotes about clear skin and good diet.

“You know how you wake up in the morning and sometimes you look gor-geous and other times you look like you got hit by a Mack truck? I realized that my Mack truck is food. If I have no sugar, yeast or wine, I have no undereye bags and my skin is perfect.” -- Mariska Hargitay, Actress

Refined sugar causes an unnatural rise in the body’s blood sugar levels. This, in turn can weaken the skin by affecting tissues like col-lagen and leave you more vulnerable to dry-ness, lines, and wrinkles.

“I had acne late, in college. My skin used to be really flawless. Went tocollege, became a vegetarian, ate a lot of cheese - big mistake. Here I am trying to be healthy and I’m eating grilled cheese sandwiches and French fries every day, having mad eruptions all over my face.” -- Wesley Snipes, Actor

Page 15: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

12

According to respected dermatologist Dr. Bobby Burka, “A well-rounded diet will better support a healthy immune system... (causing) fewer dermatologic conditions of all types.” Dr. Burka’s comment makes it clear that it’s not just possible, it’s actually easy to keep your exterior in excellent condition simply by making a few simple choices in the foods you eat.

“It’s better to get the nutrients for healthy skin from food, not supplements. Salmon, walnuts, blueberries, spinach... lots of my favorite foods happen to be amazing for skin too.” -- Gail Simmons, Judge, Top Chef, Bravo TV

“I eat more vegetables and drink a ton of water, because it really helps my skin glow.” -- Lily Aldridge, Victoria’s Secret Model

The consensus is clear. Heavily processed foods, dairy products, refined sugar and re-fined flour are bad for your skin. “Whole foods” (translation: fresh fruits and veggies) contain tons of vitamins and minerals and are naturally hydrating, too.

Try This!Natural sweeteners such as honey, agave, and maple syrup are digested more slowly so they don’t “do a number” on blood sugar.

Page 16: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

13

Substitute these alternatives for refined sugar for a few weeks and watch your skin become more radiant right before your eyes.

Step 3 – Make It Rain...Or At Least Mist

Something happens to older folks (and young ones, too) that live in desert climates. After a relatively short amount of time, their skin begins to look alarmingly like leather. That’s because the natural moisture in the air is ac-tually good for skin and dry desert air, cou-pled with bright sunshine, suck the moisture right out.

Did you know that your skin needs a humid-ity level of approximately 30% to stay properly moisturized? Despite that fact, a room heated by a furnace usually has a hu-midity level closer to just 10% moisture. This hot, dry indoor air can parch sensitive skin and worsen itching and flaking.

“What makes people look youthful is the quality of their skin and I don’t think you can change that.” – Nigella Lawson, Celebrity

Page 17: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

14

Fortunately, an easy-to-use portable home humidifier or one attached to your furnace adds moisture to the air inside your home.

Portable humidifiers come in many varieties. Choose one that meets your budget and any special needs.

In the winter, consider sleeping with a humid-ifier in your bedroom. Keep doors closed so the moist air doesn’t escape the room.

Humidifiers make for easier breathing when you or your kids have a cold, too. Just be sure to clean them frequently, Dr. Bassett says, to reduce mold and bacteria growth that can trigger allergies and asthma.

Try This!Add 1 cup of Himalayan Crystal Salt to a warm bath. Soak for 15-20 minutes. This type of salt bath is not only rejuvenating and re-laxing, but the salt will actually hydrate your skin and make it soft, supple & radient.

Page 18: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

15

Step 4 – Choose These 5 Skin-Friendly Fabrics

As more and more chemicals find their way into the manufacturing process of polyester, acrylic, and other artificial fabrics, there has been a dramatic increase in textile-related skin problems. For this reason, it’s best to choose natural fibers whenever you can.

Natural fibers allow your skin to breathe and maintain its moisture balance. Great natural fabrics include:

• Cotton (100% and organic, when possible) • Bamboo • Linen • Silk • Hemp

When it comes to laundering your clothes, look for biodegradable, fragrance-free deter-gents as they do not contain petrochemicals.

“I’m a big believer in that if you focus on good skin care, you really won’t need a lot of makeup.” – Demi Moore, Actress

Try This ForSuper SkinHydration!Dissolve 1 Tbsp of Himalayan Salt in 1 quart of boiling water in large bowl. Cover your head with a towel to col-lect the saltwater steam and immerse your face (careful not to burn yourself) in the steam for 10-15 minutes.

Page 19: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

16

You should also stay away from fabric softeners and dryer sheets. The residue that stays on clothing can be very irritating.

Natural Isn’t Always NiceWool, although it certainly qualifies as natu-ral, can irritate even normal skin. When you wash your clothes, try to use detergents with-out dyes or perfumes, both of which can ir-ritate your skin.

Finally, when you need the services of a pro-fessional, pick a “green” drycleaner as the all-natural products they use on your garments will be kinder to your skin.

Try This!Wear a thin cotton t-shirt under your clothes for several weeks and see if you skin doesn’t improve.

“I also take vitamins because I think when you take care of yourself on the inside it makes a big difference in your skin.” -- Magdalena Frackowiak, Polish Fashion Model

Page 20: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

Step 5 - Learn to Like It Quick and Warm, Not Slow and Hot

As pleasant as they may be, long, hot show-ers and baths remove essential oils from your skin. For this reason, you should limit your bath or shower time to about 15 min-utes or less, and use warm, rather than hot, water.

(In just a few pages, we’re going to talk to you about a wonderful new product that will turn even a quick shower into a skin-soften-ing extravaganza. Keep reading!)

Water is hard on the skin and so are harsh, drying soaps. Look for gentle skin cleansers or shower gels that have added oils and fats to lubricate your skin. Or better yet, select all-natural moisturizing soaps and emollients that are free of chemicals and preservatives.

“If someone’s got good, clean skin, with not too much make-up on, and good, clean hair that’s bouncy, and the nails are clean and not overly done, then you can put anything on her and she’s going to look good.” -- Bruce Oldfield, Fashion Designer

17

Page 21: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

How do you know when you’ve hit on a skin-friendly soap? A good rule of thumb is that your skin should feel soft and smooth after cleansing, never tight or dry.

Try This! The skin on your feet can become especially cracked, rough and dry during the winter, even if you’re using moisturizing soap in the shower. When you get home from work dur-ing cold moths, remove apply a rich foot cream to your bare feet. Then put on a clean pair of socks as you do your evening chores. The heat of the socks will help the lotion to penetrate, softening your soles easily.

“Some guys say beauty is only skin deep. But when you walk into a party, you don’t see somebody’s brain. The initial contact has to be the sniffing.” – James Caan

18

Page 22: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

Step 6 – Apply Moisturizers Daily

Moisturizers provide a seal over your skin to keep water from escaping. Thicker mois-turizers work best, such as over-the-counter brands Eucerin and Cetaphil. You may also want to use cosmetics that contain moistur-izers.

If your skin is extremely dry, you may want to apply an oil, such as baby oil, while your skin is still moist. Oil has more staying power than moisturizers do and prevents the evaporation of water from the surface of your skin.

Why Most Moisturizers Won’t DoSome people react badly to moisturizers.

Allergic reactions to the ingredients in mois-turizers are just one problem. Timing is an-other.

“I have this very strange sensitive skin. If I put anything on it but this one product, it erupts into a rash.” -- Rebecca De Mornay, Actress

19

Page 23: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

The best time to apply moisturizers is when your pores are open, generally after a shower or bath. If you take your shower/bath in the morning like most people, however, you’ll be covered in a thick moisturizer that will get all over your work clothes unless you wait 30 minutes or so for the moisturizer to sink into your skin.

And if you moisturize at night, before you go to bed, your pores aren’t going to be open.

If only there were a better way . . .

Try This!Actually, there is a better way, and we want you to try it! Please keep reading. . .

“When I began my search for the perfect skin care to fight the ag-ing process, I noticed that my sensitive skin was reacting horribly to any product I used.” -- Connie Sellecca, Actress

Breaking News: The Future of Skin CareHas Arrived in America

“Our goal with the Elixator is simple. We want to provide a com-prehensive, chemical-free, economical, and most of all indulgent, skin moisturizing experience during the course of a single shower. We think it’s something everyone deserves.” - Ed Leach, Partner, Ideas With Wings, LLC

The five step program that we’ve presented in this guide can make a world of difference in the quality and texture of your skin. The easy, natural strategies have been helping women look their best for centuries.

In this chapter, however, we’re going to talk to you about something decidedly NON-tra-ditional. It’s a product called the Elixator and we’d like to share this news story on it with you now...

The

ULTIMATEMoisturizing Experience

21

Page 25: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

(Denver, Colorado) – As dry skin season draws to a close and bikini season looms just around the, the launch of the Elixator, a unique system for moisturizing the face and body, couldn’t be timelier. The Elixator combines efficient German engineering with made-in-the-USA artisanship. The result can “turn an ordinary bath-room shower into a temple of natural beauty for women who worship soft skin,” says Edwin Leach, co-founder of Ideas with Wings, the exclusive U.S. distributor for the Elixator.

Naturally Fragrant ElixirsThe Elixator Ensemble Experience begins with freshly produced, moisturizing body-

elixirs that contain all-natural ingredients. “Different elixirs have different properties,” explains Roche. For example, rosemary has been shown to stimulate circulation, and lemongrass enlivens the mind and senses.

Both of these ingredients are used in the eye-opening olio dolce vita which also includes organic sunflower, jojoba, and almond oils and has a delicate Ylang Ylang & Indian Rosewood scent.

“Each Elixator Shower Oil produces its own subtle, natural fragrance from the organic es-sential oil blends added to them,” reports Ro-che. “That means you can add the benefits of aromatherapy to the Elixator Experience, too.” Creating an EmulsionThe naturally fragrant elixirs are placed into a small, non-electrical device that is attached to the shower head. The universal ½-inch fit-tings are standard with the Elixator device. The Elixator works if you have either fixed plumbing with a shower head screwed on the end or a hand-held shower wand with the shower head at the end of a hose. The patented, proprietary technology of the Elixator creates an emulsion, a homogene-ous blend of oil and water that facilitates the soothing oils work on dry skin.

23

Page 27: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

Emulsifiers – Are These Chemicals Really Good For You?

Your skin can only absorb oils if they are part of an emul-sion. An emulsion is created when oil is mixed in the form of tiny droplets with water or water is mixed in the form of tiny droplets with oil. But this doesn’t happen naturally. We all know that “oil and water don’t mix”

To overcome this natural law, science had to find a way to hold oil and water together without them separating in the bottle or jar. Their method for achieving this requires the entire cosmetic industry to use a third component – an emulsifier, to make sure their oils and water stick together.

24

Page 28: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

Not All Emulsions are AlikeThe Elixator creates emulsions naturally, but that isn’t the case with most moisturizers and the results can be disastrous. “Natural skin oils are actually pulled out of your skin by chemical emulsifiers,” says Roche. Despite this fact, however, chemical emulsifiers are found in all commercially available skin-care lotions and creams, from the economy brands to the high profile, “upscale” brands.

The amount of emulsifier depends on the type being used. Products like Glyceryl Stea-rate, Ceteareth 20, Emulsifying Wax NF, Cete-aryl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol/Ceteareth 20, and Polysorbate 20 are common wax-based emulsifiers. Some of these products are then combined to achieve the necessary emulsion, increasing their potential for harm.

Furthermore, because bacteria spoil emulsi-fiers quickly, manufactures add preservatives to extend the life of the emulsions. “Unfortu-nately, most skin types are sensitive and often allergic to the preservatives used in emulsi-fiers,” says Leach. “So people end up paying for products that worsen the problem they’re trying to resolve.”

25

Perfect, Natural EmulsionSThe Elixator is a revolutionary, Ger-man made device, the first of its kind tobe developed any-where. The Elixator thoroughly binds oil and water together to create a perfect, freshly prepared, and natural emulsion of organic moisturiz-ing, essential, and treatment oils.

Page 29: Free Report-Natural Skin Care

The Power of the Shower,Not the Plug“Today’s discerning customers want two things in their wellness products” ob-serves company spokesperson and co-founder Edwin Leach. “They want pure, natural ingredients that won’t harm their bodies, and they also want a product that does not have a negative impact on the envi-ronment.” The Elixator satisfies both these desires with a skin-pampering natu-ral emulsion made pure, vitalized water and organic moisturizing/treatment oils and a “delivery system” that is powered by water itself.

The Elixator device requires no electricity,” explains Leach. “It is installed between the water control valve and the shower hose and operates using only the normal household water pressure.” This makes the Elixator safe, as well as cost-efficient, and an energy saver, too.

The Elixator is even a time saver in the morn-ing. According to Roche, you only need to use the Elixator for three minutes while you take a normal shower to achieve “splendidly soft, clean skin.”

26

ORGANICCOSMETICS

Interested in Community, Not Just Commerce“We have set up an oil blending and prod-uct fulfillment center in Denver, Colorado,” reports Roche, “and we’re excited to be part of the community there. “It’s centrally locat-ed to provide expedient UPS delivery to both coasts.” He notes that Elixator’s U.S. facility has been licensed and certified by NATRUE, the European Natural and Organic Interest Grouping as an organic cosmetic producer and distributor.

Roche and Leach are emphatic that the spirit at the heart of Ideas with Wings goes beyond selling products like the Elixator. “We strive to give our customers the deep satisfaction and good feeling you experience when you purchase and a wonderful product that deliv-ers tangible benefits,” explains Leach. “But we also want to foster the feeling in our cus-tomers that they are part of a community of like-minded individuals who celebrate good health and want to do everything they can to enjoy a long and productive life.”

Well, there you have it, your quick and easy guide to smoother, softer skin. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading it, and we especially hope you’ll put what you’ve discovered into action. (And we especially hope you’ll con-tact us about the Elixator.)

But before we say good-bye, we have just one more thing to say. We’d like to point out that taking care of your skin isn’t just about good looks, it’s about good health.

Your skin is your body’s protective covering. It’s a head-to-toe “force field” that prevents germs from entering the body and doing damage to your internal organs. In this way, it plays a role in maintaining the immune sys-tem.

Skin also helps to regulate body temperature through the sweat glands. When you become overheated, you perspire. The perspiration

For me, taking care of your skin is the most important step. You can cover it with all the makeup you have, and it’s still not as nice as beautiful skin.” - Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Spanish Actress

evaporates and that allows your body to cool down...unless your pores are clogged and your skin is a mess, that is. In that case, the perspi-ration can’t come to the surface and is trapped within the body.

Here’s something else: when exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, the skin manufactures Vitamin D, an essential vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for the normal development of healthy teeth and bones...and skin, too.

So whatever skin you’re in, we urge you to take care of it. It’s got to last you a long, long time.

Best wishes for a lifetime of soft, supple, & ra-dient skin,

Edwin Leach and The Elixator Team

1. Get Your Shave On - Believe it or not, regular shaving (even in winter, when it’s not always necessary) helps skin stay soft be-cause it manually removes a layer of dead, dry skin cells, revealing healthier, softer cells. Flick the razor at least twice a week for best results.

2. Out with the Old, In with the New Exfoliation is the process of removing the old, dead cells that cling to your skin’s outermost surface. You should exfoliate every 7-14 days to remove dead cells, dirt, and oil. You can buy an inexpensive exfoliating puff or exfolia-ting shower gloves or exfoliating washcloth

3. Dry Your Skin Gently – After a bath or shower, dry yourself gently with a big, fluffy towel. If you rub yourself dry harshly, you will damage your skin and set the stage for wrinkles later on in life.

5. Get Back into Circulation – Any activ-ity that promotes healthy circulation is good for your skin. Increased blood flow, a natu-ral byproduct of exercise, nourishes skin cells and keeps them vital.
