Campsites, Lakes, and Fishing Hot Spots Whatever your preference – tent, RV, or cabin – Lloydminster and area is richly blessed with some of the most picturesque areas you’ll find across two provinces. As these sites typically book up in early spring of each calendar year, you’ll want to do your research, solidify your dates, and make calls as soon as you know where you’re spending your summer long weekends. Within driving distance of Lloydminster is Makwa Lake (often referred to by locals as Loon Lake), Sandy Beach Regional Park, Dillberry Lake, Little Fishing Lake and more. May we add, many of these beautiful lakes offer a full golf course (pack your clubs!), small concession (bring your loonies!), and a range of water-friendly activities (remember your life jackets!).

Perhaps the RV and tenting scene provides exactly what you’re looking for. If so, there are several RV parks and campgrounds in the area. If you’re interested in staying close to Lloydminster city proper, Rolling Green Golf Course and RV Park and Weaver Park (located near the Lloydminster Cultural & Science Centre on Highway 16 east) are two spectacular options. Both offer shower facilities, electrical access, and concession. Just a short distance away, Rolling Green offers a renowned 18-hole golf course, licensed club house, and beautiful buildings perfect for a family reunion, wedding, or similar special occasion.

This mini-oasis is just 15 minutes north of the city and offers a variety of amenities to make you feel at home. They have it all: tent and RV camping (with a public shower house), baseball diamond, concession, two playgrounds, and of course a beautiful sandy beach to warm up on after taking a dip in the lake. Sandy Beach is also in the process of upgrading their 9-hole golf course this summer, so if you’re looking to hit the links, be sure to call ahead.

Hunting, Archery, and MoreEnjoy the thrill of the hunt while experiencing the glory of the

great outdoors in Lloydminster and area. Home to expansive prairie, ponds, and wooded, grassy areas, you’ll love your experience here. Before you head out, be sure to have the correct hunting license. As Lloydminster straddles the border of Alberta and Saskatchewan, your practice will be impacted if you do not have the correct license. Check outwww.albertaregulations.ca or www.environment.gov.sk/hunting for full details.

Lloydminster & District Fish & Game Association was established in 1927. This rich history, coupled with a passion to advocate for conservation and management of these assets, emphasizes their knowledge in the area. Membership-based, they have a beautiful Youth Centre, Indoor Range, Outdoor Range, and offer an Outdoors Woman Camp. Learn more on their website at www.lloydfishandgame.org. For those interested in archery, connect with Lloydminster & Area Archer’s Association. Running year-round, they offer youth programs, training for beginners, 3D shoots, and more.

THE WILD WEST

Rodeos, Bull Riding, and more Lauded as one of the most memorable events across the prairies, the range of rodeos, chuckwagon racing and bull riding events make for the ultimate cowboy experience. Whether you’re visiting or you’ve made Lloydminster your home, there are a range of activities to enjoy all summer long.

Start the season off with the Lea Park Pro Rodeo. Hosted for over 60 years, each June cowboys and cowgirls descend to the Marwayne, Alberta area for this longstanding event. Including steer wrestling, team roping, bareback riding, youth and children’s activities, a rodeo dance and more, the Rodeo Committee is known to have said, “it’s the most fun you can have with your boots on”.

Additional events include the Bull-A-Rama, hosted as part of the Three Cities Fair (hosted by the Paradise Valley Ag Society), the Wainwright Stampede, and the Brad Phipps Memorial Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event in Lashburn, Saskatchewan.

Cap the summer off with chuckwagons at Denham’s Ram Tough CPCA Finals, hosted in August at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds. Watch the best drivers and fastest horses vie for the CPCA Chuckwagon Championship, and be sure to catch the range of activities including Pink Day (in support of breast cancer), nightly beer gardens, the Family Fun Night, and the Chuckwagon Cabaret!

pRESERvED HISTORY TO DISCOvER

Museums and More If you want to take a road trip to expand your mind and soak up the area’s history – you’re in luck! There are many options within driving distance. Uniquely located in the original Paradise Valley, Alberta grain elevator, the Climb Thru Time Museum displays authentic artifacts, objects, and art celebrating the birth of agriculture and rural life in Western Canada. This gem can be enjoyed in a day trip, and is open Monday through Sunday from May to September.

The stunning Frenchman Butte Museum features nine buildings, a teahouse (perfect for an afternoon refreshment), and RV Park. The rich history of the region is proudly showcased in the museum, from vintage photographs of Fort Pitt (from as long ago as 1884!), to a buckskin jacket worn by Louis Riel, firearms, and an original Hudson’s Bay Company trade musket.

St. Walburg & District Historical Museum has been in operation since 1986, and is traditionally open daily from the end of June until September long weekend. A recent restoration undertaking has refreshed the museum providing a glimpse of the area’s past to locals and newcomers alike. Speaking of St. Walburg, their annual St. Walburg Wild Blueberry Festival is a hit! Hosted the fourth Saturday of August, this event features live music, art show and sale, “Everything Blueberry” tea party, and kids play and games area. It’s a staple in the region, and once you’ve attended you’ll know why!

Founded in 1949, the Western Development Museum has a location in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. A collection of vintage vehicles, 19th Century Canadian-built portable steam engines and a steam-powered Phoenix Centipede log hauler are featured in a lineup you won’t see anywhere else. Additional exhibits celebrate Saskatchewan’s rich history, chronicling events from 1905-2005 across the province. May we suggest making a day of it, and include a trip to the Allen Sapp Gallery? A selection of works done by Cree artist Allen Sapp provide an intimate view into a way of life on the reserve. A decorated artist, Sapp received many of Canada’s highest honours and awards for his work before passing in 2015.

HISTORIC aDvENTuRES aWaIT!

Take the Trail to the North West Frontier The trail to the North West frontier begins in Lloydminster, as you take a trip down the Yellowhead Highway to explore a range of grounds, museums, and historic sites. Before you head out, we encourage you to plan your route in advance, fuel up, and pack beverages, snacks and all essentials. While some offer rest areas and shelters, many sites are primitive with limited stops and access points in between.

Begin on the grounds of Frog Lake National Historic Site, where the battle between Chief Big Bear and the Canadian military took place. A cairn respectfully honours those who fell during the Frog Lake Massacre in 1885. Fort Pitt Provincial Park highlights the history of this important trading post (located between Fort Carlton and Fort Edmonton), the fur trade, Treaty 6, and historic events of 1885.

The hamlet of Frenchman Butte – located on the beautiful banks of the North Saskatchewan River – is home to the well-maintained Frenchman Butte Museum and Frenchman Butte National Historic Site. With advance notice, the museum staff can provide guided tours of local area historic sites. Be sure to check the listings section for contact information.

WINTER WHITE

Snowboarding, Skiing and SleddingIf you love the sound of the swoosh as you’re cascading down a snowy slope, Lloydminster and area have you covered. May we suggest a visit to Table Mountain Regional Park? Located between Paynton and North Battleford, Table Mountain offers wintry fun for all ages.

Little ones as young as six can partake in their ski and snowboard programs, which help kids develop basic skills, advance to the next level, enjoy the terrain park, and be more comfortable on their edges. Be sure to call for full details about their children and youth programs and camps, which are often scheduled during week-long school breaks.

Perhaps you’re an advanced athlete. Consider their High Performance Clinics or becoming an instructor yourself! Table Mountain offers four lifts, 11 trails and 40 acres of skiable area. For those who love viewing the expansive night sky overhead while they zoom across the snow, be sure to check out their night skiing. Hosted every Friday (unless the weather dips to -20 or lower), this is a memorable experience in itself.

For those who want to stay closer to home, Mount Joy Snow Resort is located 20 minutes south of Lloydminster. This fantastic site is run by volunteers, and offers Ski and Snowboard School, rentals (ski or snowboard), an indoor concession, and a terrain park. This year they’ve added new runs, so head out on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy all they have to offer.

If sledding is your style, may we suggest heading to White Knuckle Motorsports or Rec-Tec Power Products to connect with fellow sledding enthusiasts? They’re in the know on the best trails to explore and can hook you up with locals who share your passion for gears and snow.
