The time waiting on clarity hasn’t been wasted as there have been many meetings to explore what the road map looks like for our charity. In fact, when decisions are made then we are in a strong positive and pro-active position to gain controlled access to the building and our assets at the earliest possible time. We have ‘I wonder’ meetings so that we can begin to think through what services and staff will look like. (Will we all come back with long hair !) Understandably, the plans the board and this community are outlining, requires time to carefully plan and prepare our workplace, develop processes and communities alongside ensuring that our funding and financial provisions are to introduce any changes safely, effectively and adaptations are economically viable. The board have a motivation to model new and innovative approaches which capture the very essence of informal education for the foreseeable future. In the short term, activities and interactions will enable ongoing physical distancing, with most children, young people and their families likely to continue with online - in home learning. Home learning activities are also complimented by educational packs delivered straight to people's doors containing relevant resources to enhance participation whilst breaking down any economic barriers. As the charity and our community moves forward our interactions with people and groups will look and feel different in the foreseeable future, as the bio bubble increases then our interface and work will adapt in order to suit both community requirements and relevant public health advice. These new interactions may include attending a group with a limited number of children/young people and an increased commitment to carry out outdoor education learning. May 2020 EDITION FREE

Our young volunteers haven’t let lockdown stop the V-Inspired meetings. Now we gather on Zoom on a Wednesdayevening, share some stories, play some games and check inwith each-other. Our V-Inspired volunteers are taking thereins and are running parts of the session themselves.Amazing!

Our volunteers continue to make videos for the children who useour service! Cara continues strong with the daily challenges, whilst Marysia has begun her healthy living videos for the 426group. Then we are also finalizing a wee group project that willbe a visual masterpiece. Stay tuned to our social media formore!

We asked this question to our young volunteers and here are some of the comments:

‘The thing I miss the most is seeing all the children laugh and have fun. It was always important to seethat I, along with the staff team were able to give the children food, a safe place to have fun and tolearn.’

‘I miss the young females that attended the group :( Monday’s were my favourite days! The different chats / discussions we’d have never failed to make me smile! Such a lovely wee group LHopefully we can all return soon!

‘For me I'd say being involved in the center and making decisions for the youth management committee. As doing that was a huge part of my day to day life.’

V-Inspired is contributing to an upcoming volunteering section of the new Youth Talk CECwebsite. To celebrate the success of the programme and the benefits it can bring, two of ouryoung volunteers answered questions for the council’s webpage! With answers like the oneshown below, we can encourage the growth of similar initiatives!

What have you gained from your volunteering experiences?

‘I have gained a LOTmore confidence, which allows me to further step out of my comfort zone and grow. Ihave made new friends and have gotten a lot of experience – I have had fun in the groups, attended awhole bunch of courses, visited the parliament – but most of all, I feel like I am part of the Jack KaneFamily’.

Firstly, we want to say to all the wonderful young people who have stuck to thepublic health messages and stayed within the guidelines. Some people forget that it’s so difficultto become so unconnected from your friends and networks now so a massive well done from us all.As we look to develop practice in the coming weeks, our youth work team will be working alongsideyoung people to gather their views, these views will shape services over the coming weeks/months.

Many young people are concerned not by justwhat’s happening now but what the future holdsfor them. As our youth work services continueto adapt to the ‘new normal’ for now, the youthwork team continue to ensure that young peopleare at the heart of what we do and remainconnected and valued from the wider centre andcommunity.

Over the last wee while, our virtual serviceshave continued to develop with our digitalfootprint expanding, key highlights haveincluded the development of the male's groupthrough the mechanism of online gaming. Thisplatform has strengthened connections withyoung men and provided an accessibleplatform which encourages them to discussthings that matter to themselves whilstsharing their feelings.

The ‘Good To Talk’ programme has beendeveloped through our youth work team keepinglive connections with young people, with themessage delivered through consistenttelephone communications which offers supportand practical approaches, which can assistyoung people during these times.

The youth work services have also benefittedfrom the centre’s successful fundingapplication to the Well-Being Fund. This fundhas provided the opportunity to respond toyoung people’s immediate needs through thecreation and distribution of ‘Thinking of You’packs and ensuring that we have theresources readily available to support ournew approaches.

Young people’s physical and emotional healthcontinue to be a priority for our Active Youthservice. From an increased online presence,Active Youth have been promoting a consistentmessage and sharing top tips and practicalexamples of things that young people can getinvolved in to support their health during thistime.

After I left Aberdeen, I studied in France before returning to work at two universities in the UK andalong the way have been based in Paris, New York, Brussels and Dublin. Though being a BrusselsEurocrat, most of my working life has been spent back in Belgium.

In 2012, I was delighted to be posted to head the office of the European Commission in Scotland. Our office in Edinburgh or to give the place, its official title “The Representation of the EuropeanCommission in Scotland” closed when the UK left the EU at the end of January 2020. It was anincredible privilege for our tiny team in Scotland to have had the chance to engage with so manyScots and EU Citizens’ from right across Scotland. In the process, it was great to be able todevelop a good working relationship with the Jack Kane Community Centre. I recall in particularlyjust how imaginatively the JKCC had used the EU’s Erasmus programme to take two groups ofyoung people to Italy and Spain and was delighted that we were able to assist in highlighting allthat had been achieved by the JKCC in a two-page ‘Daily Record’ spread. Afterwards it waswonderful to be asked by the JKCC, to join a party of MPs and MSPs to meet those involved in thevisits and to learn more about the Centre.

I suppose as an EU official, I should say Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” as it is the EU’s anthem. I do findit quite stirring but in terms of more modern classical music, I appreciate Aaron Copland’suplifting “Fanfare for the Common Man.” But if you are going to restrict me to one song as I am offfor what I expect will be my last posting, I would like something to remind me of Scotland, ofEdinburgh and indeed of the JKCC and so it has “gonna be” 500 Miles by the Proclaimers-not leastas reputation has it that Craig Reid composed the song on his way to an Aberdeen v Hibs match-so the song has double resonance.

I think it is an age thing as while I havealways been quite fond of dogs, I haveincreasingly succumbed to the intriguingwhims, wiles and antics of cats.

I try (and often fail) to be good but especially atScottish cinemas I am fond of small pot ofstrawberry ice cream.

My boyhood heroes would probably be atoss-up between Superman and Tarzan (toreally show my age). Swinging through thelush, sun-kissed jungle always seemed quiteappealing. I don’t know if “Doctor Who”qualifies as in those days there was nothingbetter than the Doctor taking on the Daleksor the Cybermen. But spinning the clockforward and I know he is not a superhero buthave always liked Robbie Coltrane (akaHagrid) trying to ride to the belated rescueof Harry Potter and his pals with invariablya few slip ups along the way… . I have been working at the Jack Kane Centre for 9 years. Currently I work as a youth worker in thegirls group but also spend time developing the new ani-nation group as well.

I am a positive cheery individual and in my free time I enjoy going family walks, spending time withmy family and friends, bounce exercise classes, along with the occasional Disney movie marathonday and not forgetting my favourite thing to do .... dance around my house listening to loud musicwhile I do the cleaning!!

All time favourite would always have to be MrPaolo Nutini but current favourite is Stormzy (Ihave tickets to go see him in September and I amvery excited!!)

I am an animal lover!! But if I had to chooseit would defiantly be a dog with mypersonal favourite being a Boxer! I have onenow his name is Paolo, I always had Boxersgrowing up they are the most loving andfun breed!! With their wee crinkly facesjust being the cutest!!

I wouldn’t say I really had a favourite superherobut if I had to choose the first one, I thought offit would be Mulan!! She is fierce and I love whatshe represents “a flower that blooms inadversity is the most rare and beautiful of all”.....closely followed by Merida, another strongindependent character who also isn’t afraid to bewho she wants to be!!

The young people of course!!The children and young people are whatmakes me love my job at the Jack Kane!!All of the young people are truly amazing, and I have great memories with lots ofchildren and young people in my timehere!! But the special girls from the girl’sgroup in particular for me are the heart ofmy enjoyment working at the Jack Kane!!

My ideal movie snack would have to beNachos with cheese, Jalapeños and salsawith a can of Coke Zero on the side!!

Hey everyone! My name is Cara, and I've been a volunteer with the Jack KaneCommunity Centre for the last 6 months. I have been involved in Excel HolidayMatters at St Francis Primary School and will soon be taking part in HappyHibby.

I originally wanted to join Happy Hibby as I am a massive Hibs fan and enjoy going to the gameswith friends or family, but I see there is so much more to be gotten out of it!

My favourite current Hibs players have to be Christian Doidge and Stephane Omeonga from themen’s first team and Ellis Notley and Joelle Murray from the women’s first team.

My best player of all time has got to be Arthur Duncan who currently holds the record for themost number of league appearances for Hibernian between 1969 and 1984 – that's fifteenyears of first team action!

My best ever Hibs moment for the men’s team has to be 21/5/16 where Hibs bet Rangers 3:2 inthe Scottish Cup Final. My best ever Hibs moment for the women’s team has to be 29/4/18where Hibs bet Glasgow City 3:1 in the SWPL Cup Semi-Final.

'mon the Hibies!

Each of the board members and the wider committee of this centre, know that there will bedifficult and testing times ahead, there will be times when we take 2 steps forward and one stepback, however we are encouraged by the Scottish Governments approach and are taking stepsthat once we get the green light to resume work in the building that safety is at the forefront ofany services or indeed activities.

The board have been meeting Council Officers to draft a route out of this situation and have anexcellent plan in place.
