DAYTIMETVPIPELINE

BBC America adds some new ‘Class’ to its Saturday night lineup

By Jay BobbinQ: I liked Tracy Spiridakos on “Revolution,”so I’ve been glad to see her on “MacGyver.”Will she appear more regularly on it? —David McKay, Newport News, Va.A: She’s about to appear more regularly ...but on another series, though CBS’ “Mac-Gyver” reboot likely will be happy to haveher back as the hero’s once-and-perhaps-fu-ture flame whenever possible. Before the

current televisionseason is over,Spiridakos willbegin a recurringrole on NBC’s“Chicago P.D.,”playing a detec-tive who initiallycollides withVoight (JasonBeghe) over thehandling of acase. She eventu-ally wins himover to the extentthat he offers her a

spot in his unit, suggesting the actress maybe in the Windy City for a while.Q: Will there be another sequel to “DollyParton’s Coat of Many Colors”? — CarolNorth, Grand Junction, Colo.A: It’s certainly possible, since the first twomovies in the NBC franchise did very solidbusiness in ratings terms. However, for hernext scheduled project with the network,Parton is switching themes and songs. Herclassic tune “Jolene” will be the source of thenext film, inherently different from the “Col-ors” tales as it tells of a woman’s efforts tokeep her man away from the romantic rivalwho wants to steal him away. Parton has along-term deal with NBC, so don’t count outthe notion of “Colors” being revisited downthe road.Q:When will the latest James Bond movie,“Spectre,” start getting its run on regular tel-evision? — Brad Dawes, via e-mailA: It’s still in its premium-cable run onEPIX, where it started its engagement lastsummer (and also streaming on such serv-ices as Amazon and Hulu) ... and if one wereto use the example of the preceding chapter“Skyfall” as a template, we’d anticipate see-ing it arrive on basic cable in the spring orsummer of 2018.USA Network has been the first post-pre-

mium TV destination for Daniel Craig’s pre-vious exploits as Agent 007, so we’d advisekeeping an eye on the listings there as thattime nears — particularly if the next Bondpicture ends up being set for release duringthe holiday season of 2018. There’s no defi-nite timeline currently for what is being re-ferred to as “Bond 25,” but it’s been reportedthat series-veteran screenwriters Neal Purvisand Robert Wade will be returning for it.

By John CrookSci-fi and fantasy fans will have twice

as much reason to look forward to Saturdaynights starting April 15, when BBC Amer-ica launches the 10th season of its hit re-boot of “Doctor Who,” followed by thepremiere of the new and very promisingspinoff series “Class,” from young-adult(YA) novelist Patrick Ness (“A MonsterCalls”).Peter Capaldi begins his last 12 episodes

as the Time Lord in his third and final sea-son of “Doctor Who.” The actor previouslyannounced he is leaving the role at the endof this season, along with head writerSteven Moffat. Before the inevitable regen-eration, however, The Doctor will interactwith Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), his newesttraveling companion, and match wits witha major new villain played by NicholasBurns.Capaldi also appears in the first episode

of “Class,” the new series set at Coal HillAcademy, a recurring “Doctor Who” set-ting. Former companion Clara Oswald(Jenna Coleman) once taught there, andfrequent space-time events over thedecades have attracted sinister entities fromother dimensions to the school. During thecourse of the series premiere, one of thosebeings mounts a savage attack, promptingThe Doctor to recruit five very diverse CoalHill students and one of their teachers to actas guardians for their classmates. In the interest of avoiding spoilers, suf-

fice it to say that two members of thatgroup are extraterrestrials and two charac-ters begin a gay romance during the courseof this first season.“I honestly didn’t really notice until I

had finished doing all the character biosand writing a couple of episodes, really es-tablishing my key group, that not a singleone of them is a straight white male,” Nesssays. “This is really, really a part of what

contemporary YA is about: letting otherpeople have a voice, to speak and take cen-ter stage. That’s what teenagers expect. It’swhat they see in the world.”If some viewers notice some broad sim-

ilarities between this show’s premise and acult classic involving a resourceful Ameri-can teenager, that’s perfectly fine withNess.“In my opinion, ‘Buffy the Vampire

Slayer’ is the greatest television show of alltime,” he explains. “It is absolutely bril-liant, a work of genius. ‘Doctor Who’ is afantastic show, of course, but ‘Buffy’ reallybroke the mold and showed the possibili-ties of a show about teenagers. To mergethat sensibility with the fantastically hugeuniverse of ‘Doctor Who’ was something Icouldn’t resist.”Among the lead ensemble, newcomer

Vivian Oparah quickly breaks out in herrole as Tanya, 14, the youngest member ofthe group forced by a family tragedy togrow up early.“It’s hard to play the dichotomy in that

feeling that you’re academically ahead butactually you haven’t really matured yet, soyou’re still dealing with some of the issuesof being a kid,” the actress says. “I wasconstantly thinking back to when I was thatage and the things that I was thinking aboutthen.“One of the big themes in ‘Class’ is the

issue of identity and everyone is sort ofgrappling with their own issues about that, about a desire to identify with something,”she adds. “But the great thing about theshow is how it also shows the duality of aperson, how you can be more than onething at a time. You can’t really categorizea teenager as one thing, like ‘oh, he’s ajock.’ There’s a lot of crossover betweenthem. Everybody has some aspect of youin them and that’s what we should be con-necting on.”

Tracy Spiridakos

Mayor Davis said, “Earth Day 2017will provide residents a great opportunity to volunteer to clean up and beautifyour community. It’s a day when we can work together building communityspirit and a cleaner city.”City officials are inviting individuals, community organizations, and other groups

of volunteers to sign up to clean a specific area of the community on April 22from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Interested organizations and individuals are in-vited to register a team. At the celebration, the BayonneDepartment of Public Works will distribute information about recycling, stress-ing the need for a clean community throughout the year. Public Works Director

Gary Chmielewski stated that “recycling not only helpsthe planet, but reduces costs and saves space in land-fills.” The Hudson County Improvement Authority(HCIA) will distribute bags with recycled crayons, recy-cling brochures, calendars, and other items. The HCIAwill offer educational, temporary tattoos. There will alsobe two Dr. Pepper-Snapple recycling bins on hand to re-ceive recyclables that have been collected in the clean-up. Teams will be asked to take photos of the number of

garbage bags collected. The team with the highest number of filled garbagebags will be rewarded with a special prize, lunch with Mayor Davis. In addition to neighborhood clean-ups, the City will offer window cleanings

for storefronts in the Special Improvement District on Broadway from 17thStreet to 30th Street. The Special Improvement District/Urban EnterpriseZone (SID/UEZ) will bring in a professional window-cleaning firm to lead thestorefront cleaning effort. Community volunteers can assist the window-clean-ing project. Any interested store on Broadway between 17th Street and 30thStreet should contact Dee Dee Bottino by phone at 201-858-6357 or by e-mailat [email protected]. “The Vietnam War” is coming to PBS this fall),“The Great War” borrows his formula of under-scoring historians’ and scholars’ comments withactors’ voicing of recollections of those whowere present at the time, both on European bat-tlefields and at home ... with the domestic chal-lenges including a devastating flu outbreak.Blythe Danner (as novelist and journalist EdithWharton), “The People v. O.J. Simpson: Amer-ican Crime Story” Emmy winner Courtney B.Vance, Campbell Scott and Christopher Gorham(“Covert Affairs”) are among the performersheard.“What convinced us that there was some-

thing essential and interesting going on was thefact that while the nation wasn’t going to war,Americans were,” says Stephen Ives, an “Amer-ican Experience” veteran who is among “TheGreat War’s” producers and directors. “Nurseswere flooding into France. Ambulance driverswere heading over there. Men were volunteer-ing for the French Foreign Legion. YoungAmerican aviators — many of them well-heeled, from the nation’s elite colleges — wereflying volunteer sorties for a thing called theLafayette Escadrille, which sort of created that

dashing image of theaviator that we knowfrom World War I.

By Jay BobbinFor all the stories of World War I that have

been told over the past century, some stillhaven’t been. Those tales of soldiers, medical personnel,

journalists and others fuel “The Great War,” anew “American Experience” miniseries thatPBS will air over three consecutive nights start-ing Monday, April 10 (check local listings). Co-inciding with the 100th anniversary of theUnited States’ entry into the conflict, the pro-gram narrated by Oliver Platt (“Chicago Med”)also recalls the challenges faced by PresidentWoodrow Wilson in abandoning his initialstance of neutrality and uniting the country over

President Woodrow Wilson is among the figures recalled inthe “American Experience” miniseries “The Great War”Monday through Wednesday on PBS (check local listings).

“We also felt like the tension and strugglethat the neutrality period represented, in partic-ular the pressure and really tortured processWoodrow Wilson went through to try to decidewhether or not this was America’s fight, was anessential part of the story,” adds Ives. “And ifwe cut that off, it just felt like it was going tobe kind of a less-complete portrait of somethingthat really is such a turbulent and incredibly im-portant part of the country that we became.”Among those commenting in and on “The

Great War” is A. Scott Berg, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Woodrow Wilson biogra-pher, who notes that “our economic policytotally changed because of World War I. Thisis why to this day, so many people on the rightwing so detest Woodrow Wilson, because hereally built up the federal government. Sud-denly, we had thousands of agencies that wererunning this entire war, the first time we reallyhad this huge war machine. We were a smallpacifistic nation with an army of about150,000, and suddenly, we were sending mil-lions of men overseas. Suddenly, we become agreat defensive force in the world.”Moreover, Berg says, “Our entire foreign

policy for the last 100 years comes from aWoodrow Wilson speech in which he said,‘The world must be made safe for democracy.’That line came in a speech when WoodrowWilson went to Congress and asked for a Dec-laration of War. Now, whether you like thestatement or not, (and) whether you agree withit or not doesn’t matter. That’s what we’ve got,and we’ve been living with it for 100 yearsnow. All that, I think — modern America —comes from World War I.”

PBS’ ‘American Experience’ recalls World War I — ‘The Great War’ — over three nights

2017 AMERICAN LEAGUE By dAN lAddBOSTON AGAIN

THE TEAM TO BEATThe AL East placed three teams in the

postseason in 2016 and could do so againthis season. It starts in Boston where David“Big Papi” Ortiz is out via retirement butDustin Pedroia remains as a solid veteranleader. The Red Sox have a potent one-two-three punch in their pitching rotation withDavid Price, 2016 Cy Young Award winnerRick Porcello and Chris Sale. Price, however,

has Sox fans holding their breath over astrained left elbow injury that came to theforefront in spring training. If the Red Sox stumble, the Baltimore Ori-oles and Toronto Blue Jays will be lookingto pounce. The Orioles have a potentialleague MVP in Manny Machado and a vi-able supporting cast. Their counterpart, theBlue Jays (who defeated Baltimore in theWild Card Game) may appear to be on thedownswing with the loss of Edwin Encarna-cion and an aging roster. But the Blue Jays

still have a very good pitching staff led byJ.A. Happ who could carry them if they get itgoing. In New York the Yankees went out andagain grabbed Aroldis Chapman to be theircloser after basically loaning him to theChicago Cubs for their championship run. They would not have done so if they didn’tbelieve in the rest of their pitching staff. TheTampa Bay Rays simply hope to improve onlast year’s 68-win season, which won’t beeasy considering the rest of the division.

TRIBE SEEKS REPEATThe Cleveland Indians came as close as ateam can get to winning the World Seriesand have their sights set on doing so thisseason. The signing of DH Edwin Encarna-cion will be a good step in that directionand shortstop Francisco Lindor is amongthe best in the game. However, with in-juries to second baseman Jason Kipnis andstarting pitcher Carlos Carrasco thingscould get interesting early for the Tribe. The Detroit Tigers, who came up short of a

Wild Card berth last September, shouldkeep things interesting. With guys such asMiguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez theycould explode offensively. In 2016 Detroittrailed only Boston in terms of batting av-erage. They get runners on base, but needto get them home. Not to be overlooked are slugger Eric Hos-mer and the Kansas City Royals, who’vebeen in two of the past three World Series, winning it all in 2015. This team can stillproduce offensively and was much better

last season than its .500 record. Sadly, itspitching staff suffered a major loss in theoff-season with the death of Yordano Ven-tura in a car accident. Looking to improve in the division are theChicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins. The Sox started strong (23-10) last yearonly to fall to fourth place in the divisionwhile the Twins need vast improvements, especially on the mound, if they want tobe a difference maker.

A DIVISION UP FOR GRABSThe Texas Rangers and the Houston As-tros are ready for battle. The Rangershave been among the league’s best inboth pitching and runs scored the pasttwo seasons but tend to falter once theyreach the playoffs. Veteran and futureHall-of-Famer Adrián Beltré continues tobe the driving force, but how long can hedo it in the Texas heat?Over in Houston, the Astros have two guysnamed Carlos ready to go. After spending

last year with Texas, veteran Carlos Bel-tran is back in Houston with young short-stop Carlos Correa, who is a potentialMVP candidate. The Astros went 4-15against Texas last year, which contributedto their drop from 2015 when they wonthe division. For the Seattle Mariners, slugger NelsonCruz remains a pitcher’s nightmare alongwith Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager. Onthe mound, however, the Mariners gotdouble-digit wins from only two pitchers, including Hisashi Iwakuma. If they can

add any pitching success to that of theirhitting they could put something together. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim con-tinue to ride the coattails of one of theleague’s best players, reigning AL MVPMike Trout. Fans keep waiting for the An-gels to be a contender but with a shallowpitching staff it isn’t likely this season.Same for the Oakland Athletics, a teamthat never surprises anyone when theycontend but will start the season with aceSonny Gray on the DL.

AL WESTFrancisco Lindor

2017 NATIONAL LEAGUE By GeoRGe diCKieMANY QUESTIONS, NO CLEAR FAVORITE

Any discussion of the NL East has to beginwith the Washington Nationals and New YorkMets. The Nats boast a balanced lineup anda deep starting rotation but showed an exas-perating inability to close out games last yearthat really hasn’t been addressed. But if closerShawn Kelley is up to the task and the Natsget bounce-back seasons from 2015 MVPBryce Harper and starter Stephen Strasburg,

the Nats could repeat their division title. TheMets’ hopes ride with their elite starting pitch-ing, four fifths of which are coming off ex-tended stays on the disabled list. If they’rehealthy and productive, and if their talentedlineup led by Yoenis Cespedes, Neil Walkerand Curtis Granderson can figure out how tohit in the clutch with any consistency, a WorldSeries berth isn’t out of the question. The At-lanta Braves made some intriguing veteranpick-ups over the winter (starters BartoloColon and R.A. Dickey; second baseman

Brandon Phillips) and could sneak into theWild Card Game with a few lucky breaks. Socould the Miami Marlins if they can get theirstarting pitching figured out in the wake oface Jose Fernandez’s tragic death last year;veteran righty Edinson Volquez should helpin that department. As for the PhiladelphiaPhillies, they’re at least a year away but abevy of rising talent (Tommy Joseph, MaikelFranco, among others) should make thementertaining to watch.

CUBS WIN! AND EVERYONEELSE FIGHTS FOR SECOND!Years of losing have produced a wellspring ofyoung talent and the first of what could be astring of world championships for the ChicagoCubs. They have big bats (2016 MVP KrisBryant, Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber), adeep rotation and a retooled bullpen led byex-Royals closer Wade Davis. Ex-Padre and –Cardinal Jon Jay replaces Dexter Fowler incenter field and lefty Brett Anderson looks to

solidify the back end of the rotation. If every-one performs to expectation, expect triple-digit wins and another waltz through thepostseason on the North Side of Chicago. TheSt. Louis Cardinals should see improvementafter their pitching staff endured a bout ofMurphy’s Law in 2016. An offense that ledthe NL in homers last year will be less pow-erful with the departures of Matt Holliday andBrandon Moss, thus putting pressure on thelikes of holdovers Matt Carpenter, Jedd Gy-orko and new center fielder/leadoff hitter

Fowler. But with improved team defense anda return to health/competency for startersLance Lynn, Adam Wainwright and MichaelWacha, the Cards should be in the thick of thewild-card chase. So should the Pittsburgh Pi-rates, assuming Andrew McCutchen returns toMVP form after a disappointing 2016, thebullpen led by closer Tony Watson falls intoplace and the back end of the rotation getsironed out. The youthful Milwaukee Brewersare at least a year away and the rebuildingCincinnati Reds are many.

ROCKIES COULD CHALLENGEDODGERS AND GIANTS

The Los Angeles Dodgers have the majors’longest streak of four-consecutive playoffappearances and this year’s edition shouldmake it five. They have a productive lineup(Adrian Gonzalez, Justin Turner, Corey Sea-ger), a solid rotation (Clayton Kershaw,Kenta Maeda, Rich Hill) and a deep bullpenheaded by newcomer Kenley Jansen. As-suming average years by key players, a di-vision title is realistic. The San Francisco

Giants should also vie for the West crownwith one of the game’s best rotations ledby Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto, and an efficient offense. The team ad-dressed its inability to close out games bysigning Mark Melancon, and a return tohealth should help the infield immensely. But questions persist in the outfield, whereHunter Pence has shown signs of age-re-lated decline, and catcher, where BusterPosey has experienced a power outage, andcould hold the team back. Still, they’re afactor. The Colorado Rockies could join the

party this year, led by muscular bats (NolanArenado, Trevor Story, Carlos Gonzalez)and a rotation that could be the surprise ofthe majors. The fly in the ointment couldbe the bullpen, a hodgepodge of over-priced, underperforming arms. The ArizonaDiamondbacks should bounce back fromtheir 69-93 record of 2016, provided high-priced starters Zack Greinke and ShelbyMiller come around, but the playoffs stillare a stretch. And the San Diego Padres willplay ugly baseball in a pretty city and lose100 games.

The other evening my wife and I had a wonderfuldining experience. We ate at Buon Appetito at thecorner of 43rd Street and Broadway and found itquite delightful. Between us, we tried variousdishes, shared our tastings and would like you to ac-company us on our culinary journey. We were the guests of a very gracious host Tony

Stoebling, who, fifteen years ago purchased therestaurant and deli adjacent to the establishment.Tony revamped, redid, revised and restored therestaurant/ deli, transforming it into a warm andinviting, family-oriented dining operation. It hasgrown to be one of the few outstanding Italianrestaurants in Bayonne and in Hudson County. De-spite his non-Italian name, Tony has Sicilian bloodcoursing through every vein, and is a fine, self-taught chef who has dedicated his life since histeens, in learning and perfecting his first love...cooking up delicious tasting food. The restaurant has a comfortable, intimate bar

area near the entrance, and I knew the way to startmy meal was with a glass of the house red wine. Itwas both robust and smooth. It preceded the whole-some, crunchy salad that came next, consisting ofwalnuts, cranberries and lettuce, laced with oil andvinegar and sprinkled with cheese. It was satisfyingand wonderfully fresh. The taste of really fresh foodsort of “pops” in your mouth. Next, my wife and Ishared the hot antipasto. The variety of choice wasjust right. The platter consisted of large shrimp, plump Prince Edward Island mussels, tasty clams, rollatini stuffed with ricotta cheese, and a selectionof stuffed mushrooms. This was almost a meal in it-self, and exceedingly delicious.

Next on our tasting plates came linguini withwhite clam sauce... superb and with just the rightamount of garlic. I love garlic, it brings a special lifeto most any dish and Buon Appetito uses it sensibly,as far as I’ve seen. To me, there can’t be too muchgarlic anyway. Then we shared filet of sole stuffedwith crab meat. It was heavenly... a perfect balanceof fresh fish with real crab meat, not overwhelmedwith bread crumbs. By the way, Tony advised usthat he gets fresh fish every morning delivered bysomeone who works at the Bronx fish market cen-ter.Already we were full, even though we shared the

various dishes. The generous amounts that we wereserved, told us we were near to overdoing a goodthing. But the day-boat scallops just had to be de-voured. They were plump and sweet and tender, cooked to perfection, over a bed of broccoli rabe. Itwas a perfect combination. Then along came the“piece de resistance” and array of six grand piecesof a rack of lamb, pink in the center, over a pillowof mashed potatoes. Needless to say, we ate someand took a “doggie bag” home to finish the rest. Icould only manage an espresso and a mini calzone. It was an awesome meal, topnotch Italian from theappetizer through the desserts.Let me emphasize... when you come here to eat,

prepare to leave with leftover food to supply you foranother day. The meal was a winner, eaten with de-light in a relaxed and comforting ambiance withwell spaced tables and impeccable service. By theway, Buon Appetito is also open for lunch, theycater and deliver free of charge.
