September is National Preparedness Month. Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the

United States and can happen anywhere.Heavy rains can wash out roads.

Driving: Flood FactsThe following are important points to remember

when driving in flood conditions:• Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling.• A foot of water will float many vehicles• Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUV’s) and pick-ups.• Do not attempt to drive through a flooded road. The depth of water is not always obvious. The road bed may be washed out under the water, and you could be stranded or trapped.• Do not drive around a barricade. Barricades are there for your protection. Turn around and go the other way.• Do not try to take short cuts. They may be blocked. Stick to designated evacuation routes.• Be especially cautious driving at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers. Source: www.ready.gov

PITTSFIELD - Sebasticook Valley Hospital (SVH) will hold a “Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic” at Pittsfi eld’s Bud’s Shop ‘n Save park-ing lot in the Somerset Plaza on Saturday, October 4. Flu shots will be administered from 10 a.m. to noon. Terri Vieira, SVH president/CEO and EMHS senior vice president, stated, “SVH wants everyone to have the advantage of a seasonal fl u shot that can keep them healthy during the fl u season. Our drive-thru fl u shot clinic reaches people with busy lives or mobility issues who may not have a chance to see a provider for a fl u shot. The overwhelming response to this event has proven it is important to our community, and SVH is pleased to continue to offer this service.” Flu shots will be provided to adults (18 years and older) for $25 per shot. The shot is free to Medicare card holders and is reimbursable by most medical insurances. Drivers and passengers who wish to receive the fl u shot should wear short-sleeved shirts and should expect to be asked to wait in their vehicles for at least fi fteen minutes after the shot to ensure no adverse reaction to the immunization. MaineCare patients should seek their seasonal fl u shots from their primary-care providers. For more information, con-tact SVH health and wellness education coordinator Laurie Alexan-der at 487.3890 ext. 2731.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - The Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft has announced that on Saturday, Septem-ber 13, both shows in the next Radio Show Double Feature will be directed by youth from the community.

“We had several goals when we started doing Radio Shows at the Theatre last year,” says Executive Di-rector Angela Bonacasa. “In addition to giving audience members a glimpse into the past when radio was prominent, we also wanted to create opportunities for aspiring actors and directors. Radio Shows have shorter time commitments, and are an opportunity to run an entire rehearsal and performance process from beginning to end. While this has brought a number of new adults into our community theatre group, the Slightly Off-Center Players, it has provided a number of new opportunities for our youngest members as well. The Piscataquis County community has come out to support other young, aspiring performers and directors, and we hope they will do the same for Rebeclyn, Megan, and their casts.”

The children’s show, Popeye: Visiting The Zoo is being directed by seventh grader Rebeclyn Parker of Dexter. Rebeclyn has been a regular performer on the Center Theatre stage, and this is her fi rst time di-recting a show. She is an actor, singer, and dancer, and has worked with theatre and dance professionals around the state of Maine.

The adult show, Mystery In The Air: Mask Of Medusa is being directed by high school sophomore Me-gan Bergeron from Parkman. Megan has been involved on the technical side of several radio shows, and has been seen on stage at the Center Theatre in Woman in Black and Peter Pan, Jr. She is also a regular volunteer at the theatre, doing everything from working in the box offi ce to making popcorn.

Showtime on Saturday, September 13 is 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door, and admission is by donation. A list of all upcoming events is available on the Center Theatre www.centertheatre.org. The Center Theatre is a non-profi t performing arts center dedicated to making the arts a part of life in the Maine Highlands.

PARKMAN - Sean and San-dra O’Donnell, of Rusted Rooster Farm in Parkman, produce a va-riety of vegetables, hay and dry beans, which they use to feed their family and market through the Brewer Farmers Market, Community Supported Agricul-ture shares, Crown of Maine Co-op and the Natural Living Cen-ter in Bangor. Additionally, Sean and Sandra specialize in growing grain – an endeavor not seen too often on small farms in Maine. Sean is currently part of a wheat breeding trial for Cornell Univer-sity through a Northeast SARE grant. In addition to growing wheat, Sean also grows varieties of oats, barley, rye and soybeans for various uses.

Sean and Sandra have worked with the USDA Natural Resourc-es Conservation Service (NRCS), the University of Maine Coop-erative Extension and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association to reach their goals to farm using new and innovative farming practices. Most recently, they welcomed the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conserva-tion District’s (PCSWCD) Youth Summer Camp so they could teach this next generation the value of farming and the types of farming that they do right there at Rusted Rooster Farm.

Partly through their work with NRCS and the PCSWCD, Sean and Sandra have become a great example for farmers seek-ing to run successful farming op-erations while maintaining and protecting the natural resources in their area. This makes them excellent candidates for the PC-SWCD’s 2014 Cooperator of the Year Award. Please join the Pis-cataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District on Friday, September 12th from 9 a.m. -1:30 p.m., Sean and Sandra O’Donnell are honored as the 2014 Out-standing Cooperators of the Year.

This Annual Tour and Lun-cheon celebration to honor the O’Donnells will take place at Rusted Rooster Farm in Park-man. Sean O’Donnell will lead a farm tour highlighting his work with NRCS, the University of

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Leslie Lizotte LSW, Community Service Specialist from the Eastern Area Agency on Aging, will be holding a Medicare 101 presentation in the Borestone Room at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft on Thursday, September 18 at 6 p.m. This presentation is specifi cally designed for those who will be newly eli-gible for Medicare: either people who are soon to be age 65 or those who are younger but disabled and who will be eligible for Medicare in the future.

The presentation explains the coverage Medicare offers and also will explain other Medicare products such as Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare D, and Medicare Supplemental insurances. Please park behind the hospital in their Dwelley Avenue parking lot, and enter the back of the building. Attendees must call in advance if plan-ning to attend: 564-7376 or 1-800-432-7812.

DEXTER - Tri-County Technical Center (TCTC) will be holding an all-day (10:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.) “Come In and See” Open House on Mon-day, September 15. Sending school Administrators, Guidance staff, parents, and the public are cordially invited to attend. You will get a “Real-Time” experience as instructors and students go through a regular teaching-training day using Industry Standards related to their particular programs areas.

In the evening from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. parents and students are invited to join us at TCTC for a Parent Orientation and Career/College Eve-ning. Representatives from business and industry, colleges, and the Armed Forces will have information to present to attendees.

Refreshments and light platters of cheese, vegetables, and sand-wiches will be available.

Tri-County Technical Center Open House and Family Orientation

Maine and Cornell University. Additionally, Dr. Ellen Mallory and Tom Molloy from the Univer-sity of Maine Cooperative Exten-sion will be on hand to further discuss the wheat breeding trials that Sean is participating in.

Dr. Ellen Mallory is the Uni-versity of Maine Sustainable Agriculture Extension Specialist and Tom Molloy is a Research As-sociate working with Ellen. Their research and outreach program focuses on small grain produc-tion, both organic and conven-tional, and on the sustainable use of organic amendments like manure and compost for crop fer-tility. Since 2009, they have led the Northern New England Local Bread Wheat Project, conducting extensive research trials, produc-ing informational factsheets and research reports, and initiating the annual Maine Grain Confer-ence. For more info about their work with small grains, visit www.umaine.edu/localwheat/. El-len and Tom are also the Maine State Coordinator and Maine Outreach Coordinator, respec-tively, for the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Educa-tion (SARE) program, which of-fers grants for commercial farm-ers to test new ideas related to sustainable agriculture practices that other farmers could use. For more info about SARE in Maine, visit www.nesare.org/State-Pro-grams/Maine/.

Dave Power, USDA-NRCS Pis-cataquis County District Conser-vationist will discuss the NRCS programs and practices that Sean and Sandra have implemented at Rusted Rooster Farm. The O’Donnell’s high tunnel that they purchased with assistance from NRCS enables them to extend their growing season for a wide variety of produce, and this tun-nel, which is only heated by the sun, also helps keep their plants healthier because of the climate control it offers. The O’Donnells have also implemented biomass and foraging plantings through NRCS contracts. To learn more about how NRCS can help you help your land through the im-plementation of on-farm conser-

vation practices, visit www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/me/programs/.

After the tour, the PCSWCD will be offering a picnic luncheon

featuring seasonal and local foods, some of which are grown at Rusted Rooster Farm. Im-mediately following lunch, they will honor Sean and Sandra and

all the work they have done, and are doing in Piscataquis County, to produce food, farm sustainably and protect our natural resources.
