WHaT aRE anDY’s sKI & RIDE GUIDEs? Welcome to the newest edition of Andy’s Ski and Ride Guides. This guide has been completely rewritten with all the new changes that have happened at Keystone. Formally Andy’s Handy Ski Guides, these little booklets open up the world of Keystone Ski Area. You will now know what happens on every run, lift and nook and crannie at Keystone. It does not matter how you slide down the hill, whether on skis, snowboard, snowbike, monoski, telemark or whatever, these guides will enhance your day.
If you are new to my guides, the best way to enjoy them is to understand my rating system; it is an international rating system, not a ski area specific system like the green, blue and black rating we now have in place. There is a big difference in the difficulty of a trail such as a double black dia- mond in West Virginia than at Taos, New Mexico! A green at A-Basin may be a black in Vermont. My system is based on the whole scope of snowriding in the world. Check out my system on the next page. It’s important that you understand my ratings are an average and can be completely different from day to day. Please read and understand my li- ability statement. Hope you have fun out on the slopes and please check out www.andysskiandrideguides.com for more information on this and other ski areas.
Here at Keystone, the trails and lifts are divided into four sections; Dercum Mountain (the frontside and back going towards the North Peak), North Peak, The Outback and The BackBowl & Windows. Each trail is listed in alphabetical order. The lifts in each section follow that.
Find out where you are in my rating system and you will know where to go to stay in your comfort zone, or to challenge yourself! Remember that conditions change minute to minute and and my ratings are a normal average.

* The descriptions and ratings contained within Andy’s Ski & Ride Guides are based upon average weather and snow conditions. Varied conditions such as new snow, no snow, high winds, poor visibility, etc. can significantly change the character and difficulty of the slope. Skiers and riders are strongly encouraged to evaluate the conditions and determine if the slope is within their skill level. Please ski and ride with care.

1-10 The easiest of the greens. Great for learning, perfect for your first day or two but probably boring to even the 2nd day skier or rider.
11-20 A nice, easy cruiser. Perfect for the advanced beginner, or those who desire a nice run without much pitch.
21-30 For those who are making the transition from advanced beginner to intermediate. Contains both advanced beginner and intermediate pitches.
31-40 Solid intermediate run with medium steepness.
41-50 Middle of the road terrain. Intermediates will be challenged, advanced will feel comfortable.
51-60 Tough blues. Maybe a diamond for some pitches but, on average, intermediate stuff.
61-70 Single Diamond terrain. Steeper than the tough blues, but not that hard for advanced intermediates.
71-80 Solid advanced terrain. Advanced Intermediates should think twice.
81-91 Steep terrain, any type of snow, moguls, etc. Challenging but not yet extreme. Should be a solid advanced skier.
91-100 Experts only! Seriously. Anything in this category should not be skied or rode by anyone who has any apprehension....
Remember that andy’s Rating is an average and it will vary!

KEY TO UsInG THE GUIDE:
Every trail starts with all these vital numbers for a quick look at what there is to find: (A) Trail Name: I only talk about named trails so you will not
find any “secret stashes” in this guide. But there are plenty of named areas that I talk about...
(B) Rating: See Previous Page (C) Snowmaking: Either yes or no; good to know when low on
snow, especially in the early season (D) Groom: This has three different designations:
Groomed = Groomed almost every day; almost Occs. Groomed = Occasionally groomed; don’t count on it, check grooming report Never Groomed = Never groomed
(E) Color: This is the green, blue, black system that is in place at the ski area. This is ski area specific and only pertains to the trails and areas that Keystone has to offer. A blue here may not be the same as a blue elsewhere. (This is why my rating system on the previous page is better than the current rating system we have in place in this country.)

Bobtail is a short tangent that gives you a more difficult way to get to Dercum’s Dash than going around on the green Jack Straw. This can be groomed but more likely has bad moguls and icy spots as those who don’t know come this way.

Bear Tree is the easier way to get to the bottom of either the River Run Village or the Mountain House area. Off of Dercum’s Dash, this is pretty easy, but has some pitch to it so take it slow. Couple this with Ina’s Way to go to the bottom of River Run or the bottom of Schoolmarm for the Mountain House area. Great way to avoid the steeper River Run and it’s many snow riders.
bEaR TREE
Ballhooter is a pretty easy blue in the middle of the front side. It starts from the middle of Schoolmarm as a blue tangent. It then joins the steeper blue pitches of Haywood for those who want more of a challenge than the flat and crowded Schoolmarm. Look for the big turn going to the left on Schoolmarm a little past halfway. This will be a better choice for the more seasoned skier or boarder than the flat and boring Schoolmarm... no offense to those who love Schoolmarm...

baCHElOR
Bachelor is a strange blue that runs under the Montezuma Express and is usually riddled with moguls. Sometimes there a good lines here, sometimes not; depending on when the last powder day was. I firmly believe if you have good skiers coming through, you’ll have good bumps. If you have bad skiers, they will make bad turns and not very rhythmic moguls. Most snow boarders (most) don’t like huge bump fields so they usually stay away. This has some flat pitches and some steeps so this can be quite fun. They groom this every once in a while and it’s a blast, but not very often. People who like to show their skills off for the people in the lift above will love this run as it’s right there for the cat calls!

Diamond Back is two different trails, depending on grooming or not, and what time of year. When this is groomed, this is a great, medium steep, fun black on the back side of Dercum Mountain. This is quite fun if you are one of the first down it when groomed, or even on a powder day. When it’s bumped up, it’s a very long bump run that can take you a long time to get down depending on your proficiency. Check the grooming report to see if they have groomed it to decide. The sun and snow depth also are very important as it can get scraped off and or have soft bumps... Really two different trails depending on the grooming or not.
DIaMOnD baCK
Dercum’s Dash is a quick connector from the trails to the west of the Montezuma Express to get back to the bottom of the River Run area. This is pretty easy for a blue and is more of a cut over than an actual trail. It’s called a blue because you end up on River Run which is pretty hard and always crowded. Named after Max and Edna Dercum, founders of A-basin and Keystone.
DERCUM’s DasH
Crosscut is a quick tangent that gives you an alternative way near the middle of Flying Dutchman. You travel to the skier’s right and go around a bunch of trees, go under the Summit Express and River Run Gondola and then back to Flying Dutchman.
CROssCUT
Bobtail is a short tangent that gives you a more difficult way to get to Dercum’s Dash than going around on the green Jack Straw. This can be groomed but more likely has bad moguls and icy spots as those who don’t know come this way.
bObTaIl
Beger is a little tangent off of Jackwhacker or some of the other trails to the west of the River Run Gondola or the Summit Express. This is for those that want a little steeper pitch, with a narrow feel and no snow making. This can be bumped up and harder, or when groomed, this is a little easier. Let your less aggressive friends go down River Run, while you go here for a little bit more of a challenge.

Flying Dutchman is one of the three great “men” of Keystone’s front side blues. Almost always groomed, this has a fun and varied pitch to it with lots of things for you to pay attention too. This has nice rolls and flats, lift towers and snow making, and almost always lots of people. All of these factors will make this fun and entertaining, unless you don’t like that sort of thing. Flying Dutchman is dedicated to the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division, who have served their country so bravely, from past to present. Sometimes this can get scraped off and can be less desirable, especially when crowded or when it hasn’t snowed in a while.
FlYInG DUTCHMan
Endeavor is one of the two beginner runs at the top of the mountain. When the weather is good, one can take many runs on this easy but not completely flat short run. You can practice getting on the chair and your turning and stopping skills while not have many people flying by you. This is great for beginners and you get the great views as opposed to being at the bottom where you don’t get those. It should be noted that this has a double fall line and this can be hard to some.
The Discovery area at Keystone is located at the bottom of the Mountain House area and is for beginners only. This is a great place to learn as there are 4 carpets and one two seater lift here to learn how to turn and stop. The carpets make it a lot easier to get to the top than sidestepping as most of us had to do when learned back in the day. The snow boarder had to take off his or her board and walk up. Now, a carpet moves slowly along to bring you up to the top. Most will move on quickly from this section as it is pretty flat and boring. I like the learning area at the top of Dercum’s better since the views are great and the runs longer.

Gassy Thompson is a nice blue tangent off of Last Chance that is more difficult and usually less crowded than staying on Last Chance. This has a nice wide open blue pitch that is usually groomed but not always. It rejoins Schoolmarm in the very busy intersection where you can get to any of the bottom lifts. This short tangent has lots of room to make good intermediate turns and is a fun tangent.
Go Devil is a run that doesn’t get much use anymore as there are many terrain park people over here that are just here to ride the rails and the jumps. It is difficult to get here as you have to work your way through the skier’s left of the terrain park. Be very careful and have your eyes wide open as to not get in the way of the terrain park jumps and rails as this can be very dangerous. The run itself is the far western trail of Dercum Mountain and has a medium steep pitch and most of the time small moguls. It will be challenging to the intermediate and up. This is a pretty long pitch that narrows out at the end and comes to a fenced area before it continues on Lower Go Devil. See Lower Go Devil.
Frenchman is one of the best runs Keystone has to offer the intermediate and up and I always take a run on it. From the backside of the Summit House, this starts off relatively flat, curves around to the left for a quick steep pitch before curving around to the right for a long flat. Then things get fun as it rolls down the mountain with steeps and flats, rolls and terrain changes. This gets groomed often and is a super cruiser. Do watch out as there are many people on this run and some beginners make the mistake of coming here and they are over their heads. This can get scraped off at the end of the day and the last pitch is steeper than the others.

Ida Belle is a very short but steep black coming off of Schoolmarm about halfway down. This quick pitch is usually moguled and much harder than Schoolmarm. Whether it’s a black is really the question. It’s so short that most intermediates will be able to circumvent this steeper trail without much problem. Take someone here with solid skills for their first black as it ends quickly onto Paymaster.
Ina’s WaY
Ina’s Way is the easier way down to the bottom of the River Run Village, so as not to go down River Run which can be crowded and definitely harder. Couple this with Bear Tree for the easiest way down. This will make the beginner happier than watching them body slide down River Run.
HOO DOO
Hoo Doo is a quick little blue that offers slightly more difficult terrain than coming down Schoolmarm or Schoolmaster. This tangent joins Silver Spoon and then Last Chance after a couple of quick pitches that will be challenging to the intermediate but not that hard. The advanced beginner will definitely have their hands full here. This is definitely a great diversion to see if you are ready for the other blues in the area. Sometimes groomed, sometimes full of medium sized moguls that make it more difficult obviously than if groomed.
Formally called Lower Paymaster, this great twisty blue starts at the intersection of many trails, and takes you to the bottom of the Mountain House area. This has a great pitch to it, with steeper pitches and flat spots, curving around to the right and then back to the left. Watch out for others as sight lines are diminished because of the rolls. This can be busy and will be challenging for intermediates as a couple of the pitches are steep for a blue.

Jackface is a quick tangent off of Spring Dipper that is steep and moguled. This is super short but the bumps are big and side to side. You might find some small scrubs here, and rocks if there isn’t that much of a base. This is kind of cool if you want something harder, and your friends don’t. You can meet up after the flat of Jackface back on Spring Dipper or any of the other trails in this area. Nice place to bring someone who wants to try steeper moguls before bringing them to the North Peak area or even the Outback.... a nice warm up to see if they can hang.....
Jack Straw is the road that takes you from the bottom of Spring Dipper and takes you all the way across the main mountain to the intersection of Dercum’s Dash, Schoolmarm and Haywood. This is the easiest way out and this way you don’t have to go down the steeper blues below this. This is definitely the beginner way out and may be the best bet for the apprehensive intermediate. Watch out for others as you traverse by many other trails...
JaCK sTRaW

Jacques St. James is another of the short blue runs below Spring Dipper on the east side of the main mountain. This isn’t very long but is more challenging than some of the other trails here. You’ll find bumps and a blue pitch here and it dumps you off on Missouri for the trip over to the middle of River Run.
JaCKWaCKER
Jackwacker is a fun intermediate roller coaster that starts off narrow but gets wide and fun. Sometimes this is closed for the ski and ride school but most of the time it’s open to the public. It rolls around left and right with flatter sections and rolls that get steeper, keeping you entertained and challenged if you are an intermediate. Beginners will have a hard time on some of the steeper sections. Snow making and lift towers are around also, so be careful. Great when it’s freshly groomed, which is almost every day.

anDY’s RaTInG SNOWMAKING • GROOMED 28 Last Chance is an easy green on the front side. You get here by going down from the middle of the ultra long Schoolmarm, taking a right onto Last Chance. This is a very flat and easy section that becomes a feeder to the bottom from such trails as Hoo Doo, Silver Spoon and more. Eventually you join back with Schoolmarm. Because of this it can get quite crowded here and is a slow skiing zone. Sometimes they put up fences here and the patrol hangs out to make sure you’re obeying the speed laws. There are many beginners here obviously so watch out for everyone! Remember the patrol is here to help, not to bust people; they are the good guys/gals!

22 Jaybird is a quick green on the front side that is more of a connector than a trail. This short tangent is pretty flat and easy and gets you from Modest Girl over to Jackstraw. This is a faster way to get to River Run via the blue Bobtail or the black Beger over to Dercum’s Dash. This is groomed most of the time and is quite short.

81 SNOWMAKING • GROOMEDanDY’s RaTInG
After the throat at the bottom of Go Devil and Lower Packsaddle Bowl comes Lower Go Devil and this is steep and difficult. Easier when groomed, but still very steep for a single black, this has several fall lines and steep pitches. This ends with a flat before the Mountain House area which is good since you may be going fast after this steep pitch. When bumped this is a lot slower and has difficult, non-rhythmic bumps because of the strange fall-line.
Last Hoot has probably the steepest pitch on the mountain other than the hike to or cat accessed terrain. The trail here can vary widely in it’s conditions and will be fun for any advanced rider or skier. On a powder day this is great but gets tracked out quickly. When groomed, this is an awesome speed infused adrenaline rush. When bumped and icy this can be deadly! They used to have pro races here and the pros would crash all the time! If you are not advanced you will not enjoy it here unless it is groomed. Check the grooming report at the bottom to see if it has been groomed before getting here.

Midland is right before the last pitch of River Run and is a connection from Beger. This is easier than going down the rest of Beger which can be ungroomed and a little steeper. When it joins River Run, this is a very busy part of Keystone where lots of trails intersect so watch out for others. It’s especially dangerous at the end of the day as all make their way to the bottom and the village...
Mine Shaft is a great run from the top of Dercum Mountain off the back going down to the bottom of North Peak. It has a long and fun pitch that is an easy black compared to the others at Keystone. This is considerably harder when left ungroomed, as you’ll find a long bump run. When groomed this a great cruiser. Check the grooming report to find out whether they have groomed it or not. I think it’s best when they groomed it before a good storm as the pitch is wide open and the powder delicious. Others love the face shots when bumped with a layer of powder on top. It joins up with Mozart so be careful when it intersects for slower people.

Main Street is the beef of the terrain park with bigger hits and long run outs. This is served by a slow two person chair, A-51, and can be sessioned many times in a row. You had better be good though as some of these features are huge! Please make inspection runs before tackling these pro features!
Lower Pack Saddle Bowl is just a little bowl right below the Area 51 Terrain Park. This is a small area that has some open fields of powder, or moguls or even a groomed shot once in a while. This does not get as much use as many of the Keystone trails as most of the people over here are doing the terrain park. A nice way to end your terrain park session.

The Nastar Racing hill is an easy blue that will be great for all those trying out racing for the first time, or even the Nastar star... Obviously they change the course every day, but this pitch is conducive to an open, let ‘em run type of course. They have both Nastar and a practice course so stop in at the shack up top and enquire what’s going on that day. An excellent open race hill for getting your gold! Go race your buddies, improve your technique and try not to hook a gate!
nasTaR RaCInG
Mozart is a middle of the road blue with several pitch changes. Located off the back of Dercum Mountain, this is a very well traveled blue. Most will take this to get to the bottom of North Peak; and some will be over their head and scrape this snow making trail down to the ice. This can make this a hazardous trail and then add many people and its downright dangerous. When you are early, it’s nicely groomed with a nice fun rolling pitch with tree islands. It gets lots of sun and gets slushy in the spring in the afternoon... Get here early!

Modest Girl is a very easy green that is just a cut over, cat track trail that intersects the middle of the main mountain. This takes you from Flying Dutchman on an easier way over to the main intersection of Silver Spoon and others and then over to Schoolmarm. This will help the beginner avoid the blues and blacks below here. Watch out for traffic in this very busy section of Keystone...
Missouri is a connector type of trail that is short and has a double fall line. This connects the bottom of Santa Fe, Swandyke, Whipsaw and Jacques St. James to River Run and it’s so quick that I don’t know why they bothered to name it. Watch out though, as all these trails come together, you will need be aware of others, obviously.... I think they named this one so the marketing department to say they have more trails... just my opinion.....

72 Richter is a quick shot below the A-51 terrain park that is fairly steep at the beginning and narrower than most trails at Keystone. It has a nice consistent pitch and is great when groomed. It joins up with the bottom of The Slot for the flat over to Lower Go Devil. This does not get much use and is a good way out of the terrain park if your session is over.
River Run is a wide open blue with a nice consistent pitch that brings you right down to the River Run Village and two lifts; the River Run Gondola and the Summit Express. The problem is everyone in this area is coming here. Thus, it can be very crowded and by the end of the day, this can get down right icy for a ski trail in the west. Watch out for lots of people as you make consistent turns. You have a couple of options to not come here. There is a midstation on the River Run gondola built specifically to help with the crowds. Or you can take Bobtail over to Dercum’s Gulch, then Bear Tree to Ina’s way to totally forgo the mess of River Run.

Paymaster is one of the many fun front side cruisers that Keystone offers. This does not get groomed as often as the others such as Frenchman and Wild Irishman so keep that in mind. It’s a long, fun run with lots of rolls, wide and narrow parts, snow making towers, tree islands and other obstacles to keep you thinking. This trail has a lot of personality and you’ll love it, if you’re an intermediate and up and like fun cruisers. Sometimes they don’t groom it and it’s a little harder, with lots of moguls. Some of the pitches here are as steep as some easier blacks, so this can be a great warm up before hitting North Peak or the Outback...

Orfint Boy is a very short trail with a slightly steeper pitch for a blue and is located at the very congested middle of Dercum Mountain. Many trails come to this point and this is a less crowded option to some of the others. This is short and sometimes icy, with small bumps usually. Schoolmarm is the quintessential green trail at Keystone. It starts off at the top of Dercum Mountain and ends at the bottom of the Mountain House base area. It has some of the best views at any ski area, and is a challenging, long beginner run. I would not make this my first run place, as there are several steeper pitches for a green; and there are also always many people in this area. Bring your beginner friends to the Discovery Chair first or even the Ranger lift area before bringing them here. This gets groomed every day but as so many people go on this it can get a little scraped off by the end of the day. Bring a camera, for pictures of Buffalo Mountain, Breckenridge and beyond!

Santa Fe is a trail that can be fifty-fifty. The top is usually groomed and the bottom, sometimes not. So you’ll have wide open cruising’ and then after a big flat, you’ll find a huge field of moguls. This travels on the far east side of the Dercum Mountain and is quite a fun blue until the bumps start. Then it’s a long grind down to where it meets Missouri for the trip over to River Run. Wish they’d groom it all!

Riperoo’s Forest is an green gladed area mostly for children to give them a fun and safer tree experience. They have gone in here in the summer and gladed this out and tried to make this as safe as possible for the kids to check out tree skiing. There are not many trees here, and there is a fun kids tunnel and igloo to check out.
Riperoo’s Road is a long and varied way down the front side of Dercum’s Mountain. This is generally pretty flat and easy but has a couple of tougher pitches that may throw some for a loop. This intersects many trails so the beginner may be too intimidated to enjoy this. The entrance to this trail is also the entrance to Wild Irishman and that first pitch is definitely steeper. This takes you over to the eastern part of the mountain and then traverses it’s way back to Jack Straw and down to Schoolmarm to the bottom. This might take the beginner an hour or more, depending on how good he or she is! According to the locals, Schoolmarm is easier than this.

Silver Spoon is a really neat green for the advanced beginner to the early intermediate. With a wide open feel and not too steep, this will challenge the newer skier/boarder to make faster and better turns with a nice easy pitch. This gets a little crowded on busy days, but it’s usually better than some of the other greens here on the front side. In that I mean that this is less travelled so there is less to intimidate the learning process. You can concentrate on learning, not avoiding other people...
28
Silvermaster is a super short blue that take you from Silver Spoon over to Paymaster. This is more of a cut over than a trail and is very short. It can be bumped up and harder for sure than Silver Spoon so it’s kind of a wake up call for those who want to go over to Paymaster. If you can handle this quick pitch, Paymaster should be ok but if it looks too difficult, maybe you should stay on Silver Spoon...

22 Schoolmaster is another of the fairly easy greens in this section of Dercum’s Mountain. This is pretty wide and flat and it a great place to learn. The only real problem in this area is there are lots of people coming from different directions. People from the terrain park and people from Schoolmarm. Other than the crowd issue, this is a super place to work on your turning and stopping skills. The incentive of this is when you get better you can go to more exciting places on the mountain with better views and more challenging terrain.

18 Scout is a great learning area that is at the top of Dercum Mountain. There are two lifts in this area; one a carpet for the real beginner, and the Ranger lift which is a slow triple made just for beginners. This pitch here is very flat, so learning is easy here. Take your time and learn how to stop and turn, and enjoy the beautiful views that abound here.

WHIpsaW
43 Whipsaw is a fun and varied blue on the east area of Dercum Mountain. This will challenge the intermediate with a variety of pitches. Sometimes this is groomed and sometimes not and it’s very different depending... It’s much harder when it’s not groomed, with awkward bumps and terrain variances...When it’s groomed it’s great but watch out for the crazies going really fast on a not so wide trail...
NIGHT SKIING
The Slot is a seldom skied run off of Go Devil that is starting to grow in with little trees. It’s as if they want to see this go away as the little saplings are from 1 foot to over 6 feet in places right in the middle of the trail. The pitch is fairly steep but with the added tree obstacles this can be harder. It’s actually kind of fun to weave in and out of these small trees as if you were glade skiing but different since they are all new growth. I think in 5 years this will be a mature tree area and much different.

42 I Love Spring Dipper. It is such a fun blue run that has so many aspects to it. It starts from the top of Dercum Mountain and goes about halfway down. It runs along the eastern edge of the mountain and rolls and turns it’s way in a very entertaining fashion. Any intermediate or up will enjoy it’s many nuances... There are a couple of steeper pitches for a blue and there are some long flats that one should pay attention to. Most of the time it’s groomed and should be quite fun for almost all but the beginner. It stops in the middle of the run and becomes the harder Santa Fe... or continues on as a green until it hits Jack Straw

The Argentine lift is a slow two person lift that takes you from the Mountain House area at the bottom of Dercum Mountain and bring you up midway. This lift is primary for a beginner to get to some green trails. But be careful since it’s always crowded on these green trails because many other blues run into them. This is also a great way to get to the Montezuma Express quad. The Argentine lift doesn’t usually get too crowded, compared to the Peru Express but it’s a slow ride to not that far up. This, coupled with the Montezuma Express is a great alternative to getting to the top when the other bottom lifts have large lines.

This is perfect for the terrain park rider as it hardly ever gets too crowded and efficiently gets you back up to the hits and rails. This goes right over some of the hits so it’s also a great place to take photographs of your buddies doing crazy maneuvers.

Wild Irishman is one of my favorite trails at Keystone because it’s a super fun, fast and wide open blue that’s usually groomed and it’s rolls and turns are quite entertaining. Go down a hundred yards or so of Schoolmarm and look to your right for Wild Irishman. It’s starts off relatively flat and then there’s a nice short pitch of steepness, and then it’s rolls around to the right for a bit of flat before the fun really starts. From here on it rolls with steep pitches for a blue and short flats in between. This is usually groomed and is a great place to work on your carving of turns and your enjoyment of Colorado snow. It can get scraped off by the end of the day so watch out for that. Also, this can be crowded and many (read ski patrol) do not like it when you speed here. Careful and you’ll be fine. At the end it flattens out and joins many other trails so definitely for other skiers an riders.

The Montezuma Express is a fast, high speed quad that is great for laps on the upper half of Dercum Mountain. When it’s really busy at the bottom, stay here and get repeated fun runs down trails like Frenchman or Wild Irishman and avoid the masses at the bottom. This sometimes has lines but they are usually fast. Utilize the singles lines to help when crowded and get right back to the top! Watch out for many people in this area as many trails intersect here.

The Discovery lift is a slow and easy two person lift that takes you to the top of the Discovery learn to ski or ride area. This is for the first day beginner and is not very long. It is perfect to learn on as it’s slow and there are not lots of faster snow riders whipping by you. Hopefully, you’ll get bored here quickly and want to go to the top of the mountain where there are slightly harder but still green trails that offer great views and longer runs. Once you can stop and turn both ways with relative confidence, you are ready to go higher. My advice is to take the Peru Express over to the Montezuma Express via Silver Spoon up to the Ranger lift.
DIsCOvERY™
Peru Express is a high speed quad out of the Mountain House base area that is fast and efficient. This takes you to the top of the western side of Dercum Mountain. From here you can access the A-51 terrain park and all it’s features. You can also get to some black trails on the west side of the mountain as well as hit Schoolmarm or Silverspoon to get over to the River Run area. This can get crowded in the morning or just after lunch, but most of the time the lines are not bad. You’ll see lots of the terrain park people here too but generally this is a quieter area.

The River Run Gondola is the premier lift at Keystone. They have invested a whole lot of money to make this better every year. Last year they moved it back on the North side of the river so you didn’t have to walk so far as this was probably their number one complaint resort wide. Now the terminal is right in the village and it’s quite easy to get on. They added a midway station so you could get back on this eight person gondola without going all the way back to the village. This is great when crowded because the lines can get quite long. The ski back is wider this year which will make getting back here much easier and convienent. This is a great lift because it offers everyone choices. The beginner has Schoolmarm or Ripparoo Road, or the Ranger lift at the top. The intermediate has a myriad of choices including my favorites; Wild Irishman or Frenchman. The advanced can go off the back with The Windows or Diamondback. All can get on the Outpost Gondola to get to the top of North Peak. You can also get to the terrain park from here.
Summit Express is a great high speed quad on the front side that takes you from the bottom of the River Run area to the top of Dercum Mountain. This can get crowded but is most of the time a better alternative than the River Run Gondola. First of all, you don’t have to take your skis or board off, and it’s usually less crowded. The singles line is always a good idea if it is crowded. You can access every front side trail from here, as well as get the Outpost Gondola, or travel down to North Peak. When the lines are small you can get a lot of vertical in less time here with lots of different trail options.
Ranger is a slow three person lift that is at the top of Dercum Mountain. This area is great for the beginner as it’s short but sheltered and quieter than many of the other beginner areas near here. Practice your skills here without being buzzed by fast snow riders and enjoy the easy trails with great views.

72 Coming off the top of North Peak, Ambush is a great fall line trail that is usually full of bumps. Not always, but usually. You’ll find good moguls here with rhythmic lines as many good bump skiers ply their trade here. Sometimes they build huge kickers here so you can practice your air show! This occasionally gets nasty when there hasn’t been much snow but that doesn’t happen a lot. About 3/4 of the way down it flattens out then runs into the crowded Mozart flats to the bottom for the two lift choices.

45 Anticipation comes from the top of North Peak just past the Outpost. This is a wide open blue that is great for cruising. On powder days this is a great warm up before going to the steeper Outback. This is one of the main ways to get to the Outback so there are times this can get a little scraped off by the people that are a little over their heads. On a powder day it’s perfect as they groom this a lot so under the powder it’s nice and flat. Sometimes on deeper powder days this gets weird moguls as many make their way down this. Keep your speed at the end...

Cat South Glades are the glades to the skier’s left of Cat Dancer and are usually quite fun. There are lots of great open areas, and this is a super place to bring someone who is advanced, but scared of tree skiing or riding. The pitch has some steepness but not too steep, and the trees are well spaced. Certainly great on a powder day, and not as good when low on snow. Near the end cut back to the trail as you can go too far and have to climb out. Always go with a partner and keep an eye on each other! Remember the final pitch is flat so keep your speed.

Cat Dancer in my opinion is the Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde of Keystone. When it’s groomed (rarely) it’s a super ripper that you can cruise on fast and have a great time. When it’s bumped up, (most of the time) it’s a long and arduous mogul run that lasts forever. The bumps can have some nice lines in it if good people have been here but there is not usually a nice line top to bottom. It’s important to note that the last pitch is very flat and you have to go fast just to make it to the lift; keep that in mind near the end.

65 Blackhawk is a bumped or windblown black on North Peak that starts from the middle of Starfire and cuts under the Santiago Express. This can get a little ugly with weird bumps and a canted pitch. Takes you over to the bottom of Geronimo.
Bullet is one of the steepest trails at Keystone, and is a bumpers paradise. You had better like moguls because it is riddled with them. Bullet is steep and has a wonderful consistent pitch to it. If you are good you will enjoy this. Most likely you are not and this will be quite a challenge for you. Watch out in the spring as this can get icy.
Do you like steep trees? This is what you’ll find here and you had better be good at steep trees as this is one of the hardest gladed areas at Keystone. You’ll find some nice corridors here, but most of it is pretty tight. Great for the expert on a powder day and even day’s later if you have the ability.

Last Alamo is another of the great Keystone blues off of the top of the Santiago lift on North Peak. When its groomed (almost every day) this a great ripper with a steeper pitch for a blue run. You’ll feel the adrenaline pumping as you make many turns down this great cruiser. They sometimes leave bumps on the side if you want to foray into those, knowing you have an out right back on the groomed part. Be here first for the corduroy or the powder and you will have a smile on your face!
If moderately steep tree skiing is what you are looking for go no further than Glades. These are open with great corridors, and some thicker sections. When low on snow you’ll need to be careful of deadfall but once the snow gets deep, this is a great place to dance in the trees. Always ski or ride with a partner and be safe. There is a rock in here called Elephant rock that has a nice twenty foot drop but kind of a flat landing; and it’s prefaced by a hundred yard single track run in. Careful!

27 Foxtrot is an easier blue that can be accessed by the top of North Peak. This has great views of all of Keystone. The strong beginner can take the Outpost Gondola from the top of Dercum Mountain and see what’s up at the Outpost, The Alpenglow Stube, etc. Then you can take the scenic tour down Fox Trot, which has some steep traverses and narrow walls. Take your time and you will be fine. It then joins the flats of Anticipation for the trip to the bottom. After that you should definitely take the Wayback Quad to the top of North Peak and then take the Outpost Gondola back for this strong beginner tour.
Geronimo is an epic black from the top of North Peak. Typical wide open Keystone, this is a super highway that is somewhat steep for the advanced snow rider. Rarely groomed, this is what Colorado skiing and riding is all about. On a powder day, you will find many open lines to laugh with glee. If you’re not first, you’ll hear the loud shouting of euphoria all the way up the lift! Don’t forget to get speed at the end as it gets quite flat at the bottom.

62 Spillway is a harder blue that starts near the top of the Outpost and goes until you hit Anticipation going down toward the Outback. They usually leave the moguls on the side and groom the middle; but not always! When this is groomed this has a nice pitch to it and is quite fun. When moguled, the bumps last a long time for a good workout. This is always great when it’s a powder day, with open snow fields and a great pitch.

50 Starfire is an awesome groomed black that is not too steep and has tree islands and loads of trees on each side. They don’t always groom this but when they do it’s a ripper with a consistent pitch that keeps you turning for a long way down. Many runs an hour can be done with the fast Santiago lift right at the bottom. This starts of narrow but widens up as you go down. The last pitch is the steepest and can get scraped off. Be here first on a powder day and you will be rewarded!
62 Prospector is the trail that runs toward the bottom of North Peak on the skier’s right. This runs underneath the Outpost Gondola for a while. This is usually groomed almost every day and is a fun cruiser that wraps around to the left. The top pitch is the steepest, with a consistent blue pitch and then it gets easier with an easier blue pitch. This can get crowded sometimes but not always, and it’s a great place to enjoy turning. Gets pretty flat as it joins up with the flat part of Mozart for the trip to the bottom.

Powder Cap is an awesome black on North Peak that is wide open and fun. Lots of big bumps will make your day a little shorter. The powder slaps you in the face off of these usually rhythmic moguls on a snowy day and almost always there are good lines through here. The Ruby Express is a fast high speed 6 person lift that gets you back from the bottom of North Peak to the top of Dercum Mountain. This was a great addition to Keystone’s lift arsenal a couple of years ago as there used to be a large wait to get out of this area. This still has some lines, but only on really busy days, and usually only towards the end of the day when everyone starts making their way back to the front side. The Wayback Quad is aptly named as it brings you back from the bottom of the Outback and brings you to the top of North Peak. Here you can go down anything on North Peak or take the Outpost Gondola back to Dercum Mountain. This is not a detachable quad so it’s fairly slow. I try to do what I want in the Outback and try to take this only once since it is slow. It’s a pretty ride in very quiet trees below and I’ve always enjoyed the tranquility of this lift after ripping up the terrain back in the Outback.
The Santiago Express is a great four person quad at the bottom of the North Peak. When this is not crowded you can lap North Peak so many times that your legs will get tired. There are so many great trail options off of this that it’s one of my favorite lifts. There are times it gets crowded, especially in the morning as many are making their way out to the Outback but it’s a high speed quad so the crowds dissipate pretty quickly. This is wide open as far as glades are concerned and is great for the advanced skier or boarder who wants tree skiing without being too tight. There are places that do get tight though... always ski with a partner is these parts. If low on snow, this is about the only time this isn’t great. It can get icy by Colorado standards. But on a powder day, this is one of the best trails anywhere and can be compared to the famous Steamboat trails that get so much press!

You’ll find large berms, moguls, trees, rocks and strange pitches on this long, never groomed trail. This joins Coyote Caper or Anticipation depending on where you come out for the traverse back to the Outback Express or Wayback Quad. This is usually great but can be sketchy when low on new snow.
The Black Forest is the name for the section of tree glades to the skier’s right of the top of the Outback Express. Timberwolf, Bushwacker, Badger and The Grizz are all part of the Black Forest. The Grizz is one of my favorites at Keystone because the main run into the steeps is fun and then it gets steeper with big moguls and hopefully some nice powder glades. This is probably the thickest section of the Outback glades and intermediates should stay away. Always ski or ride with a partner here. This is also one of the last runs to get skied off so you can wait to come here until the afternoon of a powder day... shhh...
Lodgepole is the upper traverse coming out of the Outback trees on the skiers left of the Outback Express. This is a flat, work road trail that starts off narrow but gets wider as it goes along. Pretty flat, it’s probably a green trail but since it is fed by blues and blacks, they call it a blue. Keep your speed here as it’s very flat and you’ll have to decide when to take a left and join The Willows for the trip back to the bottom. Watch out for others coming off the many sections above you but always keep your speed or you’ll be walking.
Escape is a small tangent from Oh, Bob that lets you get back to Elk Run and the bottom of the Outback Express without having to go down the last half of Oh, Bob. This is an easier way than the bottom of Oh, Bob, which gets steep for the last pitch. This is a good idea for those apprehensive of that last bump pitch.
Elk Run is the Outback trail that is directly under the Outback Express. This trail is the busiest trail in the Outback area and usually has way too many people on it. Because of that, keep your head up and watch out for others. They groom this almost everyday and the earlier you get here, the better. Sometimes they let some bumps form on the sides so you can slip in and out at your leisure. On powder days after they’ve groomed it, it can get bumps throughout and usually the moguls aren’t that rhythmic. This is great when it’s groomed perfectly and there aren’t that many people.

Timberwolf is the easiest of the gladed trails to the right in the Outback but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Mostly moguled, this has the most wide open lines and the easiest pitch of the trails in this section. This can be one of the best trails on a powder day for going fast and getting the great face shots you desire, but conversely, when the snow gets thin or hard, this can get ugly. After a warm spring day and a cold night, the moguls freeze and this gets dangerous. But when there’s powder or when it warms up this can be epic!

Porcupine is a 100 yard wide cruiser that is in the Outback. Sometimes groomed, sometimes not, this solid intermediate trail has an easy and consistent pitch all the way. There are nice rolls throughout. This is as wide of a super trail as those anywhere. When groomed, it’s really quite fun to let it rip. Not too fast though, patrol doesn’t like that sort of thing. If it’s a powder day this is a good place to learn powder turns for the intermediate. If you can handle this, try going down Oh, Bob...

Pika is a little tangent off of Porcupine that lets the intermediate get a small taste of what the Keystone glades are about. There are nice lines through these wide open trees and the pitch is not too steep. It does get a little tighter in sections but most are quite skiable. Bring a strong intermediate here ready to learn about tree skiing and hopefully powder and you should come out with a smile. Watch for the open space and don’t stare at the trees! The Willows is the lower traverse coming out of the Outback trees to the skier’s left of the lift. This is very flat and really a green but all the blues and blacks above it feed into this. It’s tighter at first but opens up and flattens out to a meadow at the bottom. You will need to keep your speed here as it gets very flat. Snow boarders might have to take a foot out if they don’t keep their speed. Ends at the bottom of the Outback Express or the Wayback.
Wildfire is an awesome tree gladed area in the Outback that gives the strong intermediate and above wide open trees and great corridors to ski or board through. On a powder day, this is epic for the advanced and a great place to work on skills for the advanced intermediate. Wildfire reminds me a lot of Steamboats famous Shadows area with intermediate pitches that are coupled with many trees that are spaced neatly apart. This will be difficult for those just make the transition from a non tree skier to enjoying glades. Take it slow at first!
Wolverine is a great tree run at Keystone that gives you that out of bounds feel. It starts off from the top of the Outback Express and is pretty tight in the beginning. This is not very steep, has lots of trees and moguls and widens out later. Open corridors of fun for the advanced intermediate and up will be found here and it’s a long tree run. This side is easier and not as steep as the other side of the lift trees, so you can determine if your friends can handle it here. Traverse right if not to get to the more open shots of Porcupine.

The Outback Express is one of the best lifts in the country with lots of advanced intermediate and up terrain that you can do time and time again with this fast quad. You hardly get a chance to get your breath when the ride up is over. There are mostly glades or bumped terrain here but sometimes they groom a couple trails here. Check the grooming report at the bottom if this concerns you. You can climb from here and get many open powder shots or tight trees; you decide. The lines at the lift here can get long but mostly in the middle of the day, as many good skiers and riders come here on powder days. Brahma is one of the long tree glades in the Windows section that requires a pretty long hike to get to the top of this area. It’s usually worth it though, for the advanced skier and rider because you will find mostly untouched powder and tree glades. It’s fairly steep here and never a groomer has been here. There are some open sections with powder galore (hopefully) and some very tight sections with many trees. Hike and ride with a partner here as you may not encounter anyone else here the entire day. If something happens, you’ll want and need someone.
Bingo is an awesome pitch on the backside of the Outback that is steep and sometimes deep. Most don’t like to hike so this is usually worth it. This is only a five minute hike to get here from the top of the Outback Express. Bingo has a cornice to jump off and steep terrain to land in. This is the first choice of the hikers so many drop in here. Intermediates will be over your head here but it ends quickly on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and you might find this sketchy run out to be annoyingly long; but I’d say it’s worth the turns on Bingo...
Blackjack is one of the last of the hikeable trails in the Windows and is probably the most open. This is a great place for powder and worth the almost hour (depending on your fitness) to get here. If it hasn’t been windy, you’ll find great snow and an open area for many faceshots. If it has been windy, this can get windblown and not as good. Head over to the trees where the snow has been blown and you’ll find some great lines here. Try to go with a partner here since this is pretty remote and dangerous. This has a double fall line which adds to the difficulty.
Bergman Bowl is one of the great bowls that requires a long hike or a cat ride to get here. There is great steep, open terrain here with powder shots and open bowl skiing. To get here is probably an hour depending on your fitness, but most of the time it’s well worth it for the expert. There are different flanks that you can try, some being better than others depending on snow conditions. Some days the right side will blow in the good snow, some days the left. It also depends on sunshine and snowfall.

Buckshot is another of the great Windows area glades that requires a hike; although this one isn’t that long. Once you get here, you’ll find a great tree area with open corridors and nicely spaced trees. This is definitely worth it for the advanced who like tree glades and it’s recently snowed. This can get a little sketchy when low on snow. Bring a friend and enjoy the many turns, trees and gullies, and other assorted terrain found here.
bUCKsHOT
Conquest is a great tree glade off on the North Bowl side of the Outback. You must climb about 5 minutes (maybe more) and then go down to the middle glade of this large gladed area. This has medium steepness, and starts off pretty open. Then it get treed and the lines are fairly open. You will need to be pretty advanced and like gladed terrain as this goes on for quite some time. This is a great place to find powder a day or two after a snowstorm if most of the nonhikable terrain is skied out. You will have a long and flat traverse ahead of you when it joins up with Coyote Caper for the trip back.
COnqUEsT Erickson Bowl is a huge and rarely skied section of Keystone that requires a long hike or a cat ride to get here. It’s all worth it when snow conditions are right; meaning there is a sufficient base, some new snow and not that much wind. This can get windblown and not so great so check with patrol before venturing up here. Pretty much if this is open, this will be good as they wait to open it when conditions permit. This is fairly steep and wide open so with good snow you’ll find some great powder faceshots and you’ll be able to look at your pretty turns from the bottom. Make them good and you can point them out from below to your jealous friends! Locals will probably beat you here on a powder day.
ERICKsOn bOWl
Crap Game is pretty much the middle chute of trees in the Windows section. You will have to hike twenty minutes or more depending on your fitness to get here. Once here, you will be rewarded for your efforts with great powder stashes and fun tree glades with ample room to negotiate the many trees. There are tight sections but most of this is nicely spaced for great tree skiing and riding. Lots of rocks here, big and small.

MOUsE TRap
Mouse Trap is the first in the Windows section off the top of Dercum Mountain’s backside. This is a large gladed area for the advanced that likes trees with nice corridors, and hopefully powder. Mousetrap is the first one you come to and requires no hiking. This is also the shortest but that may be good if you are over your head. There are great trees here that are nicely spaced so even the advanced intermediate may enjoy it here. This is a good trail to test your friends tree glade skills before embarking on a longer hike and regretting it.
MR. TOaDs WIlD RIDE
Mr. Toads Wild Ride is a long traverse from the backside Outback bowl trails that has lots of terrain changes. Lot’s of character, the marketing department would say, with moguls, trees, berms, natural half pipe sections, logs, hits and more. It’s pretty flat and speed is crucial here to get all the way back to the Outback Express or the Wayback lift but if you go to fast you may hurt yourself as there are lots of different characteristics that are thrown at you. Snow boarders with less ability may hate this.
Independence Bowl is one of the newest areas at Keystone and requires a lot of hiking to get here. Or you can pay to be in the cat which can be a great deal for a great service. You’ll find steep, open bowls for brush- ing your powder strokes for all to look at. There are trees at the bottom of this bowl but the upper parts are pretty much open bowls of powder and rocks. You’ll have to be careful here early in the year, on bad snow years and when the wind blows the snow away. Check with ski patrol for conditions in this always changing area.
GUn baRREl
Gun Barrel is the third trail in the Windows area and it is a great long tree glade. Depending on your speed from the top of Dercum Mountain, you shouldn’t have too far to hike. You’ll find a massive amount of trees here, with great lines throughout. The trees are nicely spaced and the snow is usually pretty nice here. The pitch is intermediate and this is a great place to enjoy glade skiing or riding. You will be dumped out on Mozart so be careful at the end as you’ll be flying into a busy trail.

Puma Bowl is the large open area in the middle of South Bowl. You can access this in about ten minutes of hiking from the top of the Outback Express or you can hike to the top for a longer run. The snow is usually good here as most drop in earlier. The wind also blows snow over to here and this can be great. Sometimes it can get windblown but most of the time this is great. Hike up for more rewards! After the first couple of pitches this tightens up and the long, flat, and challenging traverse follows. Puma Bowl is definitely worth it for those who can handle a short hike and open powder fields. The five dollar cat stops near here.
pUMa bOWl
Outer Limits is the open area in North Bowl near where the five dollar cat drops you off. This has a nice consistent black pitch to it and it’s a great place for open powder turns. This can get windblown, or have large rock outcroppings, so be careful. On a powder day it can be hard to see because there are no trees in this area. But when the conditions are right this is a great place to lay out your perfect powder turns for all to see! You can hike here too.
OUTER lIMITs
North Bowl is one of the jewels of Keystone with lots of different choices for the adventurous and advanced skier or rider. You get here by hiking just five minutes from the top of the Outback Express. You then can choose to go down or keep hiking up to an hour. You could also pay the five dollar snow cat to take you to the top. There can be hiking from there also. Most of the choices here are open powder fields with great lines. There are trees below. Watch out for rocks in some sections when on low snow years, or if it’s been windy. This has a great back country feel to it. See individual trails....
nORTH bOWl
Narrow Gauge is the second of the Windows area trails and you will find lots of tree glades and hopefully some powder. Most of Keystone’s guests stay away from this area so most of the time the advanced skier or rider is rewarded with fresh snow and challenging tree lines. This requires a tad of hiking to get here but with speed from the top you can usually make it close. Great open tree corridors greet you with some open parts...

Sneak is one of the longer runs in the Windows area and you’ll have to hike pretty long to get here. It will probably be worth it if you like powder and trees and you are an advanced skier or rider. There are open shots interspersed with tight trees but all is good for those you have the ability. Definitely worth it for those who like to hike.

How do you describe a bowl this vast? And this is the smallest of the Keystone back bowls! You’ll find acres of terrain and much of it hardly gets touched. You can walk to the top of this from the top of the Outback Express or you can pay the five bucks to take the cat. The walk will take you anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, depending on your fitness, endurance and where you are going. The more you climb, the more vertical reward you will get. There are nice steep pitches here, but most are pretty short. The remainder are great open pitches and glades, with open powder shots throughout. The only real downer here is the run out at the bottom, which is flat and tricky...
sOUTH bOWl
Snake Pit is an area in the Windows that has tight trees, moguls and a somewhat steep pitch. This is below the traverse line under the Outpost Gondola and ends up on the bottom of Mozart where it’s flat and joins lots of other trails. The trees here have nice lines mostly, but there is the occasional super tight section. This gets flat at the bottom and can be difficult to get to the end if you don’t know what you are doing. It will eventually spit you out on Mozart so don’t worry. Always ride with a partner here and all trees as things can get dangerous... Watch out for the river!
snaKE pIT
Roulette is another of the great gambling themed hiking area called the Windows. This is the farthest hike, which rewards the person who makes it this far. Obviously most people drop in earlier so this has the best chance of untouched powder a couple of days after a storm. There are open fields of snow here as well as some tree glades. This can be epic if here on the right day. Sometimes the snow can get too much sun or wind and can be set up. I hope not as the hike could take over an hour!

The Trap is a great tree area with an open pitch at the beginning. You must hike up about five minutes off the top of the Outback Express and then go down to your left. The middle of these tree glades are called The Trap. There are great open tree glades here with a pretty steep pitch. There are some tight sections but most of the glades have great lines throughout. This can get bumped up from people cutting the rope and not hiking. Patrol doesn’t like rope cutters! Not sure what is being trapped out here but I’ll bet in the past this was a hunter or trappers dream area.
TRap (THE)
The Victory Chutes are great and really just open snow fields. They require a 15 minute average hike from the top of the Outback Express or you can take the five dollar cat to right above here. This is pretty steep and there are trees around but most of it is open. You can get some varied snow conditions here when warm or windy but when there’s powder this can be epic! Definitely worth the hike, although this is pretty short. Cut left to make it longer.
vICTORY CHUTEs
Tele Trees is a great albeit very short pitch that is fun for power turns and steepness. Located deep in South Bowl this used to get no use, but with the five dollar cat it has seen more than in past years. This is super short but steep and has some trees and rocks interspersed throughout. This is fun but you will wish it was longer. The snow here stays better than most of the other trails in the area as it is not as exposed.
TElE TREEs
The Stadium is the last of the trails on the skier’s left of North Bowl. This is open and is a medium steep powder field until the end where you’ll find some trees. This is more open that most of the other trails in this area so you should find great powder turns here. It can be windblown or sunbaked depending on the weather that week. Watch out for rock outcroppings and enjoy this area as many don’t come this far. You will have to hike for a while to get here or take the five dollar cat ride which is definitely worth the money...

The Wombat Chutes are steep chutes and open fields that are very short but exciting nonetheless. You will have to climb for a while to get here or take the five dollar cat. These South Bowl steeps have usually great snow as the exposure doesn’t get the sun or wind as a lot of this area gets. Too bad that this great pitch doesn’t last longer...
WOMbaT CHUTEs
The Wolf Den is the first of the hikable trails on the skiers left of North Bowl requiring just a five minute hike from the top of the Outback Express. You’ll find an open powder field first and then it gets into tree glades. The pitch is pretty easy for a black but the trees add excitement and challenge. Some rope duckers make this mogully which is too bad.
WOlF DEn
The Windows are a bunch of trails off the back of Dercum Mountain that are great tree glades with open areasand tight ones. Large rocks, moguls, and never a groomer are typical of what you’ll find here. Most of this area you must hike to, so that makes it much more desirable for those who like to earn their turns. This is a great place for powder for those who can negotiate tree lines and don’t mind hiking. See each individual trails for more information and take your apprehensive friend to Mousetrap first to see if he or she can handle it before hiking farther.

Wild Card is the middle of the Windows section off the back of Dercum Mountain. This requires a hike to get here and should take 15 minutes if you are an average hiker. You’ll find great tree glades, a medium steep black pitch and hopefully lots of powder. Not many make the effort to get here so you’ll most likely be rewarded with good snow and fun tree glades with lots of good lines. You should ski or ride with a friend here as the patrol isn’t as prevalent here as other places on the mountain.

HInTs On GETTInG aROUnD 1. Get up early. Be here when the lifts open. You will find coudurory
(finely groomed slopes), fresh powder and uncrowded conditions. If you are an advanced intermediate, get back to the Outback before the crowds and you’ll have a whole mountain to yourself for a couple of hours. Most people get here late, have a hard time getting their stuff together i.e. lift tickets, equipment and friends.
2. Have lunch early or late; not @ 11:00 to 1:00. Most eat at this time and the restaurants are busy, the mountain is not. Most lessons, especially kids, go it at these times.
3. Stay away from the bottom of Dercum’s between 10:00 to 11:00. This is when most people are just getting up the mountain and these lift lines will be long. If you are a beginner, go to the Ranger lift which is hardly ever busy.
4. Use the singles lines; you live together, ride to the ski area together, eat together, why do you have to ride the lift together. Meet at the top!
5. Come in April! It’s by far the best month at Keystone. It’s warm, everything is 100% open, it’s rarely crowded and all the stores have sales!
6. If given a choice, get on Anticipation instead of Coyote Caper if you can.
7. To avoid River Run in the late afternoons when it is icy and crowded, download on the River Run Gondola from the Mid Station or even the top (if you are coming over from North Peak on the Outpost Gondola).
TREE lInEs There are many great tree lines to explore at Keystone. Please note that tree skiing is very dangerous and should not be attempted by those who are not good enough. You should be an advanced intermediate or above, and have good confidence. You should always ski or board with a partner.
1. WOLVERINE: RATING: 75 This is a great place to bring the strong intermediate to enjoy the trees.
These start off wide open and slowly get thicker as you go down. There are many corridors to guide the new tree connoisseur through with a pitch that isn’t that steep.
2. GLADES: RATING: 85 Glades is a great, albeit short gladed area off the top of the Santiago
Express and has many open tree lines that get thick in some places and thin in others. Experience will be the best way to get to know these trees. There’s a big rock to jump off here called “Elephant Rock” and is for expert’s only.
3. TIMBERWOLF: RATING: 86 Timberwolf is a slightly steeper and thinner run than the tree runs on
the other side of the Outback Express. You’ll need to have all the skills to negotiate your way through these sometimes open and sometimes thin lines on Timberwolf. These are great glades on a powder day but when low on snow or icy this can get quite dangerous. Let it snow!
4. THE GRIZZ: RATING: 88 Steeper than most of it’s counterparts on the Outback, The Grizz
probably has the steepest and tightest lines. The farther to the left you go, the thicker it gets, but also the more untracked. There are a couple of neat gullies back here also. Bring a friend and enjoy this great and challenging gladed run. Be careful because there are more branches the farther you get to the left which obviously makes it harder to negotiate your way through here. This is best on a powder day or the day after.
