When Freddie the Frog was a tadpole, he lived in a beautiful pond. He spent his days exploring the shallow freshwaters of his home. He watched the dragonflies fly and dip in the air above.

Although he enjoyed the pond, he often liked to wonder what life was like out of the water.

One morning, Freddie met some friendly ducks. They invited him to play. Freddie joined the ducks in a game of tag around the pond.

At the end of the day, the ducks had a special invitation for Freddie. “Tomorrow we’re going to play on the other side of the pond. The water is deepest there,” they quacked. “Will you join us?”

Freddie was excited. He had never been to the other side of the pond. He couldn’t wait to go. Secretly, though, he wondered if he would be able to keep up. “Am I a good enough swimmer?” he asked himself. “Can I swim such a long distance?”

“Sure I am! I can do it!” he told himself.“I just have to!”

The next morning, Freddie and the ducks set off on their adventure. At first, Freddie swam alongside the ducks. Then the ducks started to speed ahead. Freddie tried to keep up, but he could not. Soon he grew tired. Sadly, Freddie turned back and swam home. “Someday, I’ll make it to the other side of the pond,” he promised himself.

Freddie was determined to make it to the bridge one day. He didn’t want his new friends to forget about him. He refused to give up. “If I could only grow a longer tail, I’d be able to keep up!” he thought. For weeks, Freddie ate as much as he could. His tail seemed to only

get shorter…

…and shorter…

…and shorter!

By summertime, Freddie had no tail at all. He was terribly upset until he noticed something—he had turned into a frog! Although he had no tail, he had four powerful legs. He had lungs, too, and could breathe out of the water.

The next time the ducks went out past the bridge, Freddie jumped from lily pad to lily pad. He was happy to be the first to reach the bridge this time, but even prouder for not giving up!
