APPLICATION DUE DATE: April 30, 2019 Fred Hutch-New Mexico State University Health Disparities Field Experience: Summer 2019 Health Sciences graduate students enrolled at the University of Washington (UW) and Public Health graduate students from New Mexico State University (NMSU) are invited to apply for a unique, four-week experience to learn more about health disparities in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Jointly sponsored by the Fred Hutch and New Mexico State University and supported by a grant from the National Cancer Institute, the experience will be led by Ernesto A. Moralez, MPH, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences. ABOUT THE HEALTH DISPARITIES FIELD EXPERIENCE (HDFE) During the three-week session [1 weeks online and 2 weeks in New Mexico], the HDFE program will provide UW/Fred Hutch and NMSU graduate students with the opportunity to observe and participate in clinics and services for underserved and underrepresented populations in New Mexico including Native American/American Indian reservations. This program will provide essential formative experiences and the opportunity to develop research skills to critically analyze health disparities and health education interventions. HDFE participants will spend time with public health faculty, health educators, and staff at community and clinical sites in order to fully understand the regional issues related to the existence of health inequalities and disparities. Activities will include shadowing health personnel at their worksites, and field data collection. A limited number of spaces are available for this opportunity. Students with an interest in health disparities research - especially in the area of cancer health disparities - and those interested in health promotion and disease prevention are encouraged to apply. TRAVEL AND HOUSING Fred Hutch will cover the cost of airfare, ground transportation to and from the experience sites, and overnight accommodations. Travel arrangements will be made by Fred Hutch staff unless otherwise requested.
