Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,
PARENTAL AWARENESS ‐ NOBODY IS PERFECT
Fancy a li le humour? Well, try this: Standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in her hand, the CEO said, “Listen, this is a very sensi ve and important document and my assis-tant has finished for the day. Can you make this thing work?” “Certainly,” said the young exec‐u ve. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper and pressed the start bu on. “Excellent, excellent!” said the CEO as her paper disappeared inside the shredder machine. “I just need one copy.” Perhaps the moral from this slightly dark incident might be that not being aware can be costly some mes. Paren ng can be a tough and thankless job. O en, we say that we need to be aware of every‐thing that’s going on in our children’s lives but some mes our lack of awareness can be costly to our children. Here is an old riddle: Five frogs were si ng on a log. Four decided to jump off. How many were le ? Answer: Five. Why? because there’s a difference between deciding and doing. To be “aware” parents and maintain harmony within our family, a proper set of family rules, understandings or expecta ons that are based on our family values are helpful. For example, if one of our expecta ons is for our children to maintain good results at school, we need to have what could be called preventa ve rules such as comple ng daily homework, limits on T.V. and Internet access me, balance of spor ng, cultural and social ac vi es with study me. For our part, we need to maintain regular contact with teachers to monitor progress rather than wait ll the end of a whole semester.

If we set rules and create a structure that assists children along the way, it maximises their chances for success. For us, it allows us to be in‐volved so that we can be aware of problems early and resolve them before they become overwhelming. Of course, the hardest yet most important thing for parents to do is to be consistent. If our rules or understandings are not enforced, it’s the same as not having them at all and can undermine the effec veness and structure of our family. Our children need to know that they can count on us to be consistent and dependable. They need to know that we are s ll not si ng on the log. Le ng things slide un l they become big things will create confusion and resentment in our children. We need to consistently follow through on what we have said, for only then will our rules and understandings be consistently followed. Some mes we fail to give our children, par cularly if they are in their teens, guidelines and boundaries because we are afraid of confronta‐on. However, we cannot afford to shirk our responsibili es, be log si ers, simply for the sake of keeping the peace. Topics such as
sexuality, underage drinking, drugs, screen me and other uncomfortable subjects that we might choose to ignore or make light of, hoping that such issues will not affect our family. The consequences of these issues can be frightening, devasta ng, even deadly. Just as the “important and sensi ve document” was swallowed by the shredder, because of “unawareness”, so too, can our children be lost to us and deprived of their future if we are afraid to move out of our comfort zone and be proac ve parents. A good parent is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unno ced, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society. Paren ng has nothing to do with perfec on. Perfec on isn’t even the goal, not for us, not for our children. Learning together to live well in an imperfect world, loving each other despite or even because of our imperfec ons, and growing as humans while we grow our li le humans, those are the goals of gentle paren ng. So, don’t ask yourself at the end of the day if you did everything right. Ask yourself what you learned and how well you loved, then grow from your answer. That is perfect paren ng.
CELEBRATORY EVENTS
On a celebratory note, last Friday we celebrated –Senior School River Cruise and the Movie Night. On behalf of the College community I extend our apprecia on to Jessica Goodhill, members of staff in a endance and the 300 plus students who par cipated in the River Cruise. It is an event that is always greatly enjoyed by those in a endance and this year was no excep on.
Thank you also to the Friends of Frayne for hos ng the annual Movie Night on the Balmoral Street campus and to the many families who were able to a end. A special vote of thanks is extended to the organisers: Ma ja Ng, Heather Fraser, Josie D’Aqui, Nikki Middleton, Jasmine Collier and Jess Pochintesta and their extensive and excep onal band of parent and student helpers for the organisa on and conduct of this wonderful community‐building event. A special acknowledgment is also extended to, Ian Johnston, Lee Barker and Trent Verchell from our Grounds and Maintenance team for their personal support and prac cal assistance.
STAFFING MATTERS
This week we farewelled Kelly Chambers (Marke ng and Communica ons Strategist). Over the last four years Kelly has done an amazing job in establishing this new role within the College. She has strategically cra ed and expanded the ways the College’s ‘brand’ and associated stories are communicated to the Frayne community and beyond to the extent that Ursula Frayne Catholic College now has a strong presence on various pla orms. We extend to Kelly our thanks and prayerful best wishes as she embarks on the next phase of her life journey. Our congratula ons are also extended to Anna and Ed Lim on the safe arrival of baby Ellery and to Chelaine Antenucci and fiancé Ben who were married last weekend. With regards and best wishes. POPE FRANCIS IN IRAQ
Pope Francis travelled to Iraq last week for 4 days on a trip that hasa been called courageous and risky, because Iraq is a country where Chris‐an minori es have been persecuted and many churches destroyed by the Islamic State militants.
Pope Francis was happy to see all the people gather to welcome him, saying: “Today, I can see at first hand that the Church in Iraq is alive, and that Christ is alive and at work in this, His holy and faithful people.” He also addressed the difficult situa on this country is facing: “Hos lity, extremism and violence are not born of a religious heart: they are betrayals of religion. We believers cannot be silent when terror‐ism abuses religion. Indeed, we are called unambiguously to dispel all misunderstandings. Let us not allow the light of heaven to be over‐shadowed by the clouds of hatred!”. The Holy Father proclaimed the Goodness of Jesus saying: "Jesus has the power to conquer our evils, to heal our diseases, and to rebuild the temple of our heart.” He con nued, saying, “Jesus not only cleanses us of our sins, but gives us a share in His own power and wisdom. Jesus frees us from narrow and divisive no ons of family, faith and community to build an inclusive Church and society that cares for our brothers and sisters in need". At the conclusion of the Mass on the last day of his visit, Pope Francis blessed a statue of the Virgin Mary that had been vandalised by Islamic State militants. The head and hands of the statue had been cut off, but the head was later recovered and rea ached. This statue will be placed back in the Church so that people can con nue praying and be consoled by our Lady who stood by the cross of Jesus. She will also accompany us in these last weeks of Lent, so we can celebrate with joy the Resurrec on of Jesus at Easter. Fr Jesus Bello College Chaplin, Duncan Campus

Ride to School Day is next Friday 26 March. Your Move is a community based, behaviour change program to help students become more ac ve by increasing how o en they walk, scoot or ride to school. This is not only good for their health, but for our environment. It also improves traffic flow around the school. For more informa on please visit h ps://yourmove.org.au/. Act‐Belong‐Commit is an ini a ve that promotes mentally fit schools with stronger, more resilient communi es. Being ac ve, having a sense of belonging and having a purpose in life all contribute to the happiness and good mental health of the students at Frayne.
Children who ride, walk or scoot to school next Friday will go into the draw to win some fabulous prizes including a $50 Rebel Sports Voucher. Par cipants are also invited to wear ‘Crazy Socks’. A massive thank you to Jess Pochintesta and the fabulous Friends of Frayne for their integral support for this event.

AUSSIE OF THE MONTH
Congratula ons to Oscar Parnell (5R) who was announced as the Aussie of the Month for March. Oscar is a well‐mannered and a kind member of the Year 5 Red classroom. Oscar shows respect towards the staff, his peers and the other students in our college. He has helped new students to his class this year to feel welcomed and included. In the classroom, Oscar par cipates in class discussions and he is respec ul of other student’s opinions. He strives to complete all his work to a high standard, showcasing his posi ve a tude to his learning. When out in the playground, Oscar is fair and though ul when engag‐ing with other students in different ac vi es. Junior School Awards
What a joy it was to be at the Associated & Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) Inclusive Swimming Carnival held at Claremont Aqua c Centre last Friday, 12 March. We were very lucky with the weather: not too hot and not too cold. Our students and the atmosphere was electric, with loud cheering for all compe tors. 182 students from 12 schools competed with students swimming in the 50 metre pool par cipa ng in Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Relay Events. All students then had the opportunity to par cipate in fun novelty events in the 25 metre pool. Congratula ons to all the students who a ended the day; Louis Meow, Vaidehi Trevedi, Lachlan Bas n, Daniel Simmons, Tayla Souster and Joseph Pike, all par cipated with such wonderful spirit and determina on. Their enthusiasm went a long way to making the day such a success and they are to be commended for the way they represented themselves and our college.

Amidst the violence and betrayal of Jesus’ final days, when even those closest succumb to fear and denial, the scriptures draw us into a tender encounter of mutually empowering love: a woman anoints Jesus and prepares him for what lies ahead.
