Birth-1484• Las Casas was born on November 11, 1484 in

Seville Spain. There is some debate that he was born in 1474, but in 1970 scholars proved that his real birth was in 1484. His father was Pedro de Las Casas a wealthy merchant, and there is no record of his mother.

Childhood-1493

• At the age of 9, Las Casas saw Christopher Columbus return to Seville after his first voyage. Columbus came back from The New World, which at the time was thought to be the “Indies”. During the same year Las Casas’ father, a few of his uncles, and Columbus took off for The New World on the second voyage.

Emigration-1502

• Pedro and Fray emigrated to Hispaniola, which is an island, in 1502. They were on the expedition of Nicolas de Ovando, and during their time there they witnessed the harsh treatment of the Taínos. The Taínos are pre-Columbian inhabitants of the Bahamas.

Around 1502-Military

• Las Casas went to Cuba, in 1502. He was given an Encomienda, for his military services. His Encomienda, was an estate that included services of the Indians living on it.

1513-Priesthood

• He became and ordained priest in 1513. Las Casas was the first person to become a priest in the Americas. He was also the first person to have his ceremony done in public.

1542-Treatment

• Las Casas was appalled and upset by the terrible treatment of the Natives of Spain. Based on his pleas, Spain banned the trade of Indian slaves formally. Las Casas did great things for the Indians and this was one of the things.

• During Las Casas conclusion of his defense of the American Indians in 1550. He said, “The Indians are our brothers, and Christy has given his life for them. Why, then, do we persecute them with such inhuman savagery when they do not deserve this treatment?”This is another scenario of Las Casas generosity toward the Indians.

1566- Death

• Las Casas died in 1566 at the age of 82. He died at the convent of Santa Maria de Atocha in Madrid. Through his life he was known as the father of liberation-theology.
