“ Everythings Not Black And White”
The image is a composite made up of several components and so it is difficult to provide the camera settings. The purpose of creating this image was having something to enter into the Frankston Photographic Club Synergy Competition. The background pattern and shadows which I think are an integral part of the image were created in Photoshop. The model was photographed at a FPC clubrooms shoot a couple of years ago, with a Nikon D800 fitted up with a Nissin Di866 flash. I liked the image but at that time I couldn’t find a use for it. The Magpie was photographed in my back garden recently with the objective of including it into this composite image. Initially, the image was intended to be monochrome, but that didn’t work for me, so I added the Magpie and named it Two Maggies, but it still wasn’t what I was looking for. I then added blocks of the RGB primary colours, and renamed it “Everythings Not Black And White”.The image was awarded an acceptance in the Open Colour Print section at the 2019 Warragul National Photographic competition.
Club Message
The last few weeks at the club have been excellent with cam-
era based activities, a big thank you to everyone who help out on those nights and also to the members who participated.
We are looking at the programme going forward and will ensure we have more camera and photo/pro-cessing activities planned, if anyone has suggestions as to what they would like to see covered please let us know.
We do have some good speakers lined up in the weeks to come so make sure that you check the pro-gramme on the website and also the weekly bulletin that is sent out each Friday.

Di can be contacted by email at [email protected] or 0438 892 829
On August 21st Peter Dwyer will give a presentation at the Library on Monochrome
Photography. Peter will talk about different techniques for black and white conversion (Lightroom, Sil-ver Effects Pro (Nik) and photo-shop. He will also talk on Infrared Photography.

Exhibitionst by Peter DwyerTaken with a Canon 5D II using a 17-40mm lens, exposure in HDR mode, 1/60 @ F11, +/-2 Stops. The location was on the street leading to St Vitas Cathedral, Prague, just up from the Karl Bridge. I had noticed this Porsche, decorated in luminous gold paint just begging to be photographed. Much of the idea for parking your Porsche in the street and going the extra step of repainting it Gold is to make a look-at-me statement. The camera angle was achieved by kneeling down and using a focal length of 24mm. This gave a pleasing perspective and prominence to the sleek front design. A standing perspective would have flattened things out and excluded much of the contextural setting. Utilising a high dynamic range exposure was to provide extra richness to the rendition of the gold surface as well as to ensure sufficient shadow detail in the surrounds. The HDR Image Sequences follow
These three images were then HDR processed in Lightroom for a fairly conservative result. The Gold of the car is what I wanted as was the extra detail in the pavement and buildings but the background sky was quite distracting. Also there was still some cleaning up to be done with the pedestrians, the light pole and the car parked behind. This tidying up probably consumed more time than any other part of the processing. (More, if I had done a better job of it.) A crop of the image reduced the sky distraction and helped make the subject more prominent.
The small aperture used in exposure provided good detail from foreground to back so the next step in emphasising the subject was to increase the mid-tone contrast in the foreground and especially the reflections on the car bonnet. This was applied selectively using Nik Color Efex 4, Detail Extractor. Colour saturation for the background was also selectively reduced which again helps emphasise the subject.
The remaining issue was the registration plate. With a strong graphic presence this was a distraction but to leave it out all together would be a wasted opportunity. I googled ‘amusing registration plates’ and found nothing to fit the show-off theme so I constructed a plate from two commonly used acronyms, WTF and LOL. This complemented my idea of the owner thumbing (I bet it’s a him) his nose at the average plebeian whilst attracting the maximum amount of attention.
Frankston Photographic Club Newsletter July 2019 page 5
Renders well as a monochrome too. What is lost in colour is made up in the luminosity of the vehicle against the background. I think that either version would come up well on a metallic media.
This is why I find image editing as about the most fun that you can have sitting down. Photoshop-ing is too often used as a pejorative term but when applied carefully can lift an image idea to another level. I doubt if there were more than just a few straight-out-of-the-camera images on display at the VAPS Exhibition. The end result;

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MEMBERS
Effective immediately DIGITAL images are restricted to 4 images per member per monthly competition.
You would have noticed over the last few months a significant increase in the number of digital images being submitted to the monthly competitions, in one month taking the total number of images to be judged past 160.
Not only does this create a very long night it is not fair on judges to have to judge and critique such a large number of images.
We ask members to respect the limit of 4 Digital images per month.
Prints remain at 6 per month and we will be releasing more information on initiatives to promote prints very soon.
Judging of monthly competition
1. same as current 9-15
2. to be added:image of the month in digital, regulars only, to be chosen by the respective judge. Maker of this image to be awarded with a free print/matt. Print has to be used for a colour/monochrome competition at the club. Prize can be won more than once.
