FRANK FRAZETTA

Frank Frazetta (February 9, 1928 May 10, 2010) was an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for work in comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, LP record album covers and other media. He was the subject of a 2003 documentary.

Frazetta was inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999.

Frazetta has influenced many artists within the genres of fantasy and science fiction. Yusuke Nakano, a lead artist for Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series, cites Frazetta as an influence. The creator of He-Man, Roger Sweet, states that he was influenced by Frazetta's work. Fantasy artist and musician Joseph Vargo cites Frazetta as a primary influence, and his art calendars since 1998 mark Frazetta's birthday. Chris Perna, art director at Epic Games, stated in an interview in 2011 that Frazetta was one of his influences.

FRANK FRAZETTA

PAINTINGS

Count Dracula

Atlantis Rising

DATE OF CREATION: 1972

This painting shows that everyone has the chance to succeed and achieve their goals in life. That everyone will soon be able to rise just like Atlantis. This shows that there is beauty in every one of us and that will be the key that will let us shine among the others.

DATE OF CREATION: 1966

Its a painting of the famous vampire named, Dracula. It shows the Darkness and Fear caused by the historical character that majority of the people knows. Its the representation of fear, struggles, anger and difficulties we are having in our life.

Birdman

Desperation

DATE OF CREATION: 1971

From the title itself, the painting shows desperation. Of how desperate the guy was to save the girl from the tribe that captured her. When we relate it in real life, it tells that it is not enough to good but we must do our best to achieve something, to reach the goal that we like. We shouldnt settle for the less, we must have the initiative to fight for what we want and to be better than what we used to be.

DATE OF CREATION: 1972

This painting shows freedom. Its a Birdman that can freely fly anywhere it wants to go, and anytime it wants to. As a person, we are free to do anything we want and anytime wed like to but with corresponding limitations and restrictions. We are free to choose the things we will do in our life. The choice is between doing good and doing bad.

DATE OF CREATION: 1984

This lush and lovely 1984 painting by Frank Frazetta, the king of all fantasy artists, was used as the cover for Russ Cochran's 1986 Frank Frazetta: Auction One catalog, and could not be more representative of the master's style. It somewhat resembles his classic Death Dealer character, with a mysterious armored figure and a snorting steed from hell. All the Frazetta hallmarks are here, with a powerful composition and haunting background details.

Countess and the Green Man

Warrior on Steed

DATE OF CREATION: 1989

Originally painted as a paperback cover in 1989, this stunning piece was never used for its original purpose, and has only ever been published in Underwood Publications' Icon on page 19 and in a set of 1995 non-sports cards. A truly striking image of a warrior-woman standing over a defeated alien foe, all the classic Frazetta elements are in place: the powerful, dominating female, the exquisite sense of movement and action, the lack of detailed background (lending a timeless quality to the work), and the flawless use of color.

In Pharaohs Tomb

Devil Rider

DATE OF CREATION: 1978

Double your fear, with two, count 'em, two, Death Dealer-like figures by Frank Frazetta! This fantastic oil painting was published in a 1978 TV Guide and appeared as an advertisement for the TV show "Battlestar Galactica." When Frazetta fans were mystified as to why Frazetta would turn down a rumored assignment of a cover for a "Star Wars" novelization, only to paint a similarly-themed scene for a TV show, Frazetta set the record straight for them in Testament: The Life and Art of Frank Frazetta:

DATE OF CREATION: 1970

"Satan's Outlaws - hell bent for kicks, they played tag with death and took all their curves on the high side. A brutal, battering novel of rebels on wheels." Outlaw bikers rule the road in this "born to be wild" piece by fantasy maestro Frank Frazetta. An earlier version of this later reworked painting appeared as the cover to the paperback, High Side, by Max Erlich (Fawcett Books, 1970).

Conan the Conquerer

Conan the Adventurer

DATE OF CREATION: 1987

As with most artists who have followed a similar path, the passage of time is the necessary ingredient to eventual acceptance the years leave behind the extraordinary pieces but the unfashionable contexts of their creation are forgotten. Just last year, Frank joined a very exclusive club of illustration artists when his famous Conan the Conquerer painting (a.k.a. The Berserker) was purchased for a million dollars.

DATE OF CREATION: 1966

In 1966, his cover of Conan the Adventurer, a collection of four fantasy short stories written by Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague de Camp, depicted a brawny long-haired warrior standing in repose on top of a pile of skeletons and other detritus, his sword thrust downward into the mound, an apparently naked young woman lying at his feet, hugging his ankle.

Ellie Frazetta

The Nude Woman

DATE OF CREATION: 2008

Here his work is of a totally different character. The paintings are those of his wife Eleanor, whom he loved deeply. There is delight and dignity in the subject matter that is all the more striking given the contrast with Frazetta's other works. There is an absence of raw sexuality, rather its an emphasis on his wife's radiant femininity and dignity. I think what we are seeing here is how Frazetta "saw" his wife. A beautiful, dignified, ladylike, woman whom he clearly loved.

DATE OF CREATION: 2008

Its sexual in a way that does not seem pornographic or dirty. Here, what we have is a rarely achieved balance of femininity and sexuality, of romantic love and sexual desire. What he manages to convey here, is not only the idea of a woman we would want to "bang" but a woman we would prize and want to be with. Strangely, the impression this work gives me is that what we are seeing is how Frazetta saw his wife.

Carson of Venus

The Flesh Eaters

DATE OF CREATION: 1973

The entire composition is dominated by its atmosphere and mood. A black night provides Frazetta with an eerie light to showcase the water and waves. There is a powerful simplicity at work here that enriches all of the elements. Frazetta uses a limited palette dominated by blacks, blues and greens that are wonderfully blended and harmonized. Every touch of the brush adds energy and vibrancy to the design. There is no false note in the execution of this oil; nothing is forced or labored. The ultimate result is a work of genuine beauty and power that would be the keystone of any serious collection.

DATE OF CREATION: 1975

A dark and brooding portrait of two warriors overlooking a windswept plain, this stunning painting was created as a preliminary for "The Flesh Eaters," a piece that has been presented in both Frank Frazetta, Book Four and Testament - The Life and Art of Frank Frazetta. May collectors feel that these preliminary paintings show Frazetta at his very best, spotlighting the truest and purest moment of unfettered creativity.

Frogs on the Moon

DATE OF CREATION: 1973

Frank Frazetta gives his fans a glimpse of his quirky and offbeat sense of humor in this startling scene painted as a promotional piece for Doubleday's Science Fiction Book Club. Frazetta explained the assignment's special appeal on page 178 of Legacy: Selected Paintings and Drawings by Frank Frazetta, "One of the reasons I stopped doing movie posters regularly is because I just got bored. Usually what they wanted was what they'd seen someone else do -- originality meant nothing. I like variety. I like all kinds of things.

The Sea Witch

DATE OF CREATION: 1967

The Sea Witch by Frank Frazetta, shows a nymph standing against a blue/orange sky, on a rock, though because it displays nudity the album is sold in Wal-Mart stores with an alternate cover featuring simply the band's white logo against a black background. It was made as an album cover in the movie Mothmother

The Death Dealer I

Cat Girl

DATE OF CREATION: 1973

Frazetta reimagined the executioner figure as a knight-errant. It depicts a menacing armor-clad warrior with a horned helmet, whose facial features are obscured by shadow, atop a horse, holding a bloody axe and shield.

DATE OF CREATION: 1984

Cat Girl, the most popular of his later efforts, is a lusciously atmospheric inversion of adolescent male anxieties about sex and women. The protagonist is a gorgeous, plushly-figured woman, wholly unabashed by her nudity and the viewers gaze.

Egyptian Queen

The Brain

DATE OF CREATION: 1967

Frazettas The Brain depicts the contradictions of our thoughts in a very unique way: a warrior against a demon. The demon, as painted standing shows that a sinful thought defeats the good one.

DATE OF CREATION: 1969

Frazetta shown a classic style with his work, Egyptian Queen. A beast guarding the Egyptian Queen from those enchanted by her beauty.

Savage World

DATE OF CREATION: 1967

Some pieces of art stand as the definitive works of their creators. Van Gogh's Starry Night, Seurat's A Sunday in the Park on the Island of La Grande Jatte, or Munch's The Scream are all examples of creations that have bestowed artistic immortality on the artists who painted them. In much the same way, Savage World brings together on one canvas all that is best about Frank Frazetta. The dynamic imagery, the brilliant use of color, the savagery of the cavemen contrasted with the raw sensuality of their female captive, even the plodding menace of the great beasts who stalk the primitive hunters...all of these elements are perfectly rendered by the man many have called the King of twentieth century illustration. Brilliantly conceived and flawlessly executed, Frazetta easily draws the viewer into another time and place, creating a fantasy world that reveals hidden levels and inner depths that become more and more apparent on each viewing.
