As Nov. 3 looms on the horizon, the U.S. presidential election

campaign is in full swing. No matter which way you intend to vote, chances are that you have been in-undated with news stories and all manner of political theories about the candidates and their parties. With only weeks to go before the big day, a new miniseries explores events surrounding the previous presidential election from the per-spective of a key player.

Emmy winner Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom”) returns to television as FBI Director James Comey in the four-hour miniseries “The Comey Rule,” premiering Sunday, Sept. 27, and concluding Monday, Sept. 28, on Showtime. Based on Comey’s bestselling book “A Higher Loyalty,” the production details recent histori-cal events from Comey’s perspec-tive, including the FBI’s Russia inves-tigation and Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email controversy. The miniseries depicts the relation-ship between Comey and President Donald Trump (Brendan Gleeson, “Mr. Mercedes”) and Comey’s even-tual dismissal from his post as the head of the FBI. Holly Hunter (“Sav-ing Grace”) also stars.

“The Comey Rule” was written and directed by Oscar-nominee Billy Ray (“Captain Phillips,” 2013) and was filmed in Toronto, Canada, be-ginning in November 2019. Initially, it was scheduled to air after the 2020 presidential election, but Ray publicly decried the move to delay the broadcast and even went so far as to write a letter to the cast to apologize for the move. After Show-time’s parent company, CBSViacom, changed its tune and rescheduled the miniseries for a September pre-miere, Ray explained why he felt it was important to air the show in the run-up to the election in an inter-view with Vanity Fair.

“Of course, I wanted this series to air before the 2020 elections,” Ray said in a July article. “I think our de-mocracy is on the line right now. And I wanted this series to be part of the conversation.”

Considering the highly charged subject matter and its depiction of the sitting president, it’s no doubt that the show will draw a lot of at-

tention. No matter which side of the table you sit on, Comey is a contro-versial figure, to say the least. In 2013, President Obama — who is played by Kingsley Ben-Adir (“The OA”) in “The Comey Rule” — named Comey the director of the FBI. During his tenure, Comey faced backlash from both Democrats and Republicans. Democrats criticized him for reopening the Clinton email investigation after previously deter-mining that no charges were war-ranted. Days before the election, news of the renewed investigation was leaked, and many blamed Com-ey for Clinton’s loss, despite the fact that three days before the election the FBI reiterated that charges were not warranted. On the flip side, many Republicans claimed that he planned to exonerate Clinton even before the investigation was com-plete. Then, of course, there was the FBI’s Russia investigation, which looked at whether there was Rus-sian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election.

“The Comey Rule” brings to life many of the major players involved in U.S. politics during that era. Lucki-ly, producers secured a top-notch cast to do so. Daniels is known for such films as “Terms of Endear-ment” (1983), “Dumb and Dumber” (1994), “Looper” (2012) and “The Martian” (2015). TV fans may recog-nize him from his acclaimed role in HBO’s political drama “The News-room,” a role that earned him an Emmy along with Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nomina-tions.

Irish actor Gleeson, who was re-portedly initially reluctant to take on the role of Trump, is perhaps best known as Alastor “Mad Eye” Moody

from the Harry Potter film franchise. His other film credits include “Brave-heart” (1995), “Cold Mountain” (2003) and “Paddington 2” (2018), while his television work includes “Mr. Mercedes” and the 2009 TV film “Into the Storm,” for which he won an Emmy. He’s also won three IFTA Awards and two British Inde-pendent Film Awards.

Hunter plays acting U.S. attorney general Sally Yates, whom Trump fired just 10 days into his presidency. Hunter won an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe and a Cannes Film Festival award for her role as Ada McGrath in 1993’s “The Piano.” On television, she was the star of TNT’s “Saving Grace” from 2007 to 2010. She’s earned seven Primetime Emmy nominations, win-ning twice — once in 1989 for “Roe vs. Wade” and again in 1993 for “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Mur-dering Mom.”

Other notable castings include Michael Kelly (“House of Cards”) as FBI Deputy Director Andrew Mc-Cabe, Jennifer Ehle (“Pride and Prej-udice”) as Comey’s wife, Patrice, Pe-ter Coyote (“A Walk to Remember,” 2002) as former FBI director Robert Mueller, Scoot McNairy (“Halt and Catch Fire”) as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Oona Chaplin (“Game of Thrones”) as FBI lawyer Lisa Page, Joe Lo Truglio (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) as Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Michael Hyatt (“Snowfall”) as former attorney general Loretta Lynch and Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”) as Na-tional Intelligence Director James Clapper.

Talented cast aside, there are those who will remain skeptical of the content of the miniseries. Some critics have already weighed in on the production. At press time, “The Comey Rule” showed an approval rating of 67% on the popular review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter called the miniseries “uneven,” while Daniel D’Addario of Variety called it “as self-satisfied as its sub-ject.”

In the end, though, viewers will make up their own minds, as they will at the polls in November. Watch Daniels as Comey in “The Comey Rule,” premiering Sunday, Sept. 27, on Showtime.

The Family Next Door” (2020)Fans of true crime are in for a

thrilling ride as Netflix presents the true story of convicted murderer Chris Watts in this documentary, premiering Wednesday, Sept. 30, on the streamer. While there are pic-tures of Watts that seem to depict him as a typical family man, noth-ing could be further from the truth. This documentary provides first-hand footage as it explores how Watts went from being a seemingly loving husband and father to mur-dering his pregnant wife and two daughters in cold blood. Despite having originally claimed that his wife killed their children and that he accidentally killed her when he discovered what she’d done, Watts went on to provide a full confession

and was given a life sentence after pleading guilty.

WHAT’S NEW ON HULU“Monsterland”Supernatural horror meets psy-

chological horror in this new an-thology series premiering Friday, Oct. 2, on Hulu. Based on dark fan-tasy author Nathan Ballingrud’s novel “North America Lake Mon-ster Stories,” the series features eight hour-long episodes, each of which tells a different story set in a different part of America. “Mon-sterland” depicts the darkness within human beings and the lines we are willing to cross when pushed to a point of desperation with episodes featuring a wide range of scenarios from an elderly, grief-stricken couple or a strug-gling single mother to a reformed scheming socialite or a wealthy CEO. When a Cate-gory 5 hurricane hits and the building’s residents are told to evacuate, Ray refuses to leave, much to the chagrin of his daugh-ter, Troy (Kate Bosworth, “Straw Dogs,” 2011), not to mention Cardillo (Emile Hirsch, “Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood,” 2019) and Jess (Stephanie Cayo, “Club de Cuervos”), the two cops sent to ensure that everyone evacuates. However, Ray’s refusal to leave the premises turns out to be a blessing in disguise when Cardillo discovers that a team of violent thieves has infiltrated the building and is using the hurri-cane as a cover for their heist.

As we head into October, the Halloween season is officially

in full swing. That’s certainly the case on the Food Network, which got into the spirit of things a little early this year with a full slate of spooky and sweet-themed pro-gramming.

We’re used to seeing shows like “Halloween Baking Champi-onship” and “Halloween Wars” popping up on our screens around this time — last year, the two shows premiered on Sept. 23 and 29, respectively. But for 2020, Food Network is offering nearly 35 hours of Halloween-themed programming, five more than in 2019; and it all started with the Sept. 13 premiere of “Road to Halloween Wars,” a one-hour spe-cial that led into the season pre-miere of “Halloween Wars.”

That’s also when Food Network debuted a new series, “Outra-geous Pumpkins.” If the title sounds awfully familiar, then you’re probably thinking of the one-hour special that aired in 2019. That version of “Outra-geous Pumpkins” was hosted by Casey Webb (“Man v. Food”) and featured three rounds of challeng-es that put the most serious pumpkin carvers to the test.

This year, Food Network decid-ed to turn the concept into a limit-ed series with a tried-and-true weekly elimination format. Host-ed by Alyson Hannigan of “How I Met Your Mother” fame, the series started off by introducing viewers to seven of the nation’s expert pumpkin carvers, who are now vy-ing for the $25,000 prize. We’ve had to bid farewell to one of them each week, and five carvers re-main. But even if you missed the previous two episodes, there’s still time to get in on the action — es-pecially if you have an apprecia-tion for extraordinary works of art carved out of a squash or gourd. (Fun fact: Botanically speaking, pumpkins are fruits, not vegeta-bles.)

The classic jack-o’-lantern and the Seven Deadly Sins were cov-ered in the series premiere, and last week’s episode featured 3D

dioramas of trick-or-treaters. The new episode airing on Sunday, Sept. 27, is all about spooky struc-tures. In the first challenge, aka the Quick Carve round, competi-tors must create a cemetery-themed scene with zombie ani-mals; but the structure must be at least two pumpkins tall, and the entire pumpkin must be used, from stem to seed. Round Two, the Big Carve round, is one for dino lovers: the carvers will have to create ginormous prehistoric ani-mals, but weather will make the challenge difficult.

He’ll be back (on TV): He’s a world-famous movie star, but it looks like “Terminator” star Arnold Schwarzenegger is moving to-wards TV.

The former governor of Califor-nia and star of “True Lies” (1994) has partnered with Skydance Tele-vision to develop a new scripted TV series. Schwarzenegger will both headline and executive produce this series from “Scorpion” creator Nick Santora. And while few de-tails are known at this time, it is be-lieved that the project is a spy ad-venture centered on a father-daughter duo, with Schwarzeneg-ger playing the dad.

Deadline was the first to break the news. At the time of the an-nouncement, no network or streamer had officially picked up the series, but it’s safe to say Schwarzenegger’s involvement probably gave this project a big boost.

Both Santora and Schwarzeneg-ger already have a longstanding relationship with Skydance: Santo-ra serves as showrunner on the up-coming Skydance series, Amazon’s “Jack Reacher,” while Schwar-

zenegger starred in two of the stu-dio’s feature films: “Terminator Genisys” (2015) and “Terminator: Dark Fate” (2019).

If all goes well, this new project will be Schwarzenegger’s first ma-jor role in a scripted TV series, though it’s still too early to start planning for its premiere. In the meantime, Amazon subscribers will get to hear his distinctive voice when the new animated series “Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergar-ten” launches next spring. Schwar-zenegger has provided the voice and inspired the look of its main character, kindergarten teacher Ar-nold Armstrong.

All this TV work might make movie fans nervous, but Schwar-zenegger isn’t leaving films alto-gether. You’ll see him next in “Kung Fury II: The Movie” (2020), the se-quel to the crowd-funded, comedy-martial arts featurette “Kung Fury” (2015). He’s also reprising his role opposite Danny DeVito in “Trip-lets,” the sequel to “Twins” (1988).

Cortés series canceled: Next

year marks the 500th anniversary of the fall of the Aztec Empire and the beginning of Spanish rule in

Central Mexico. Much has been written about Moctezuma II (aas well as Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés); their fateful meet-ing in 1519 was a clash of civiliza-tions that ended in murder, and, in the right hands, the story could make for a thought-provoking TV show.

Amazon certainly thought so. In 2018, the streamer greenlit the four-part miniseries from Steven Spielberg (“Schindler’s List,” 1993) and his Amblin Television produc-tion company. But the series “Cor-tes y Moctezuma” is no longer in the works: the big-budget minise-ries has been canceled “due to the production constraints created by the COVID-19 global pandemic,” according to a joint statement is-sued by Amazon Studios and Amb-lin.

“Cortes y Moctezuma” was something of a passion project for Spielberg, who had originally envi-sioned it as a feature film. Ulti-mately, the producer/director felt the story would be better served as a four-part miniseries, with “Schindler’s List” writer Steven Zaillian providing the screenplay.

added to the project: Javier Bar-dem (“No Country For Old Men,” 2007) was set to star as Cortés, Gael García Bernal (“The Motorcy-cle Diaries,” 2004) and Diego Luna (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” 2016) were on board as executive producers, and award-winning filmmakers Ciro Guerra (“Waiting for the Barbarians,” 2019) and Cristina Galllego (“Embrace of the

Serpent,” 2015) were set to direct the four episodes.

Alas, the TV production was not meant to be — not this version, anyway. Time will tell if the project gets picked up again at some point, but HBO’s own attempt at a “Cortes” series had similarly failed to get off the ground some years ago (“The Irishman” director Mar-tin Scorsese and “The Usual Sus-

pects” actor Benicio Del Toro were attached to that one).

Admittedly, it’s a complex story to tell, especially in this era of reconcili-ation and reassessment of problem-atic legacies. And Cortés’ legacy is complicated: he secured Spain’s place in the New World and laid the foundations for modern-day Mexico, but he did so by destroying a civiliza-tion, and the impact is still felt today.
