Fonds Description
Frank E. Buck fonds. – 1911-1965.
2.95 m of textual records.
220 photographs.
128 maps.
Biographical Sketch
Frank Buck was born in Colchester, England where he received his early schooling and
initial training, mostly in the printing business and journalism. On coming to Canada in
1902, he worked as an associate editor on a newspaper and also maintained a private
practice in landscaping work. He later entered Macdonald College, graduating with a
B.S.A. in 1911. Buck obtained a Diploma from Cornell University and from 1912 to 1920,
he served as Assistant Dominion Horticulturalist in charge of landscape architecture
and floriculture work at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. When the University
of British Columbia required an ornamental horticulturalist in 1920, Buck was selected
to handle the tremendous task of landscaping the University campus. He was also
active in town planning work and belonged to numerous associations. He officially
retired from the UBC faculty in 1949 but maintained his interest in campus
development in an advisory capacity.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of correspondence, subject files and pamphlets arising from Buck's
various interests (1920-1950). Buck organized most of his papers into subject files
relating to his activities and arranged them in alphabetical order. The files, in many
instances, contain correspondence, reports and memos. The fonds also includes maps,
plans, and posters, as well as photographs.
Notes
Researchers are strongly advised to check with the University Archives regarding
permission to publish or otherwise use materials from this fonds.
File List available.
Photographs are listed in UBC Archives’ Historical Photograph Database, under
catalogue number UBC 29.1. They include a retrospective photoessay/album entitled
"An Historical Report on the Development of the Campus Area of the University of
British Columbia" (1950). The photographs have been removed and stored separately as
a conservation measure.
