The last chapters of her story are being written as Frank Cable and her crew conducted an at-sea ceremony today over the sunken submarine recently discovered by divers in the Western Pacific. Wahoo, a Gato class submarine, distinguished itself during World War II by sinking a total of 27 enemy ships. During her WWII service Wahoo received the Presidential Unit Citation for Action. In July 2006 the Russian Federation Navy discovered a sunken submarine south of Sakhalin Island in the vicinity of La Peruose straight. The Russian Navy then notified the commander of the Seventh fleet. On October 31, 2006 the Navy confirmed that the images provided of the wreckage, lying in about 213 feet of water, were that of the Wahoo. Three days before the ceremony, Frank Cable departed Vladivostok, Russia. During its port visit, Frank Cable’s objectives were to promote and enhance military-to-military relationships between both Navies. After departing, the Guam-based sub tender decided to put those objectives into action. Later that same day, Cable rendered honors by manning the rails for a Russian ceremony held onboard BDK-98, a Russian amphibious ship that was transiting alongside Frank Cable. The crewmembers of BDK-98 were paying respects to a lost Russian submarine. “It was an extreme honor and privilege to preside over this solemn and long-awaited ceremony for the Wahoo,” said Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny, Commander, Submarine Group Seven, located in Yokosuka, Japan. “The accomplishments of U.S. Navy submarines during World War II underscore the relevance and importance of submarines in today’s world. This ceremony brings closure to the families of the men of Wahoo – one of the greatest fighting submarines in the history of the U.S. Navy.” Also on hand was Rear Adm. John Christenson, Commander, Naval Mine and Antisubmarine Warfare Command. He is a relative of a Wahoo crew member. “The crew of USS Frank Cable provided a meaningful ceremony that will be in my mind and my family’s mind for a long time,” said Christenson. “To have Wahoo’s final chapter written by Frank Cable is a tremendous honor. Also, knowing the Russians and the Japanese assisted in locating and verifying the remains is an epitome of the deep respect that submariners have for one another,” said Capt. Leo Goff, commanding officer. The Navy has long held that the sea is a fitting and final resting place for our Sailors. The submarine will not be salvaged nor will any of the remains of the crew be recovered. La Perouse Strait, off the coast of Northern Japan (July 8, 2007)--Rear Adm. Minutes from Business Meeting,July 21st, Subvettes ……After attending the combined meeting of the WW II vet and the

US Vets, the Subvettes held their own meeting, July 21, at theAmerican Legion Club, in Columbus. In attendance were president,Lorri Kentner, secretary, Jan Merritt, Jan Kline, Joan Mace, LindaWhitney, Ann Welsh, LaVonne Moss, Terry Tarnick and twoguests, Betty Millsap and JoAnn Miller.

Since there was no meeting in Lexington because only 3 ladieswere in attendance, the minutes from the previous meetingwere approved as printed.

There was no treasure’s report in the absence of Sue Anderson, however, it was assumed that no activity had taken place on theaccount and we still had approximately $500.00 in the bank.

Lorri showed the group the article thatappeared in the National Subvettes News Letter. Jan reported thatRita Kruel from the National group had e-mailed her that it was tooexpensive to include the colored pictures she had sent with thearticle.

Lorrie thought we should contact National about using coloredpictures. Ann Welsh said she was going to the National meeting inconjunction with the cruise next September and would bring it up.

The question came up as to whether we wanted to be more of aservice group. National Subvettes has suggested that wetake on certain projects. Ann Welsh suggested we take on a localproject, such as giving packets to the Veterans Hospital in Omaha. She said she would call the Hospital and see what they really need, and we could assembly this at our meeting in October. It wassuggested we give these packets before Thanksgiving orChristmas as they get a lot of items at that time of year.

Items that were suggested were Puzzle books, cards, bingoprizes, games and books. Ann Welsh and LaVonne Mosswould then deliver the gift bags.

Jan reported that she would not be in attendance at the Octobermeeting as she and Errol Vanicek would be attending the NationalHenry L. Stimson Submarine Reunion that same weekend inGroton, Conn.

Lorri brought up about having a silent auction in Wahoo.Motion was made, seconded and adopted to have auction, and ladies bring items to the Wahoo meeting.

Next order of business was whether we wanted to have base dues. That way we could fund some of the projects. After somediscussion, motion was made, seconded and adopted to have $5.00per year dues starting Jan. 2008. Jan saidshe would bill with the National dues.

Motion was made, seconded and adopted to adjourn the meeting.

Respectfully submitted,Jan Merritt, Secretary
