Tēnā koutouContinuing to explore high quality chamber music in its diverse guises, it is with great pleasure that I now introduce you to one of the finest jazz and early music improvisers, pianist Francesco Turrisi. This is Francesco’s second appearance for CMNZ — he was the captivating pianist in L’Arpeggiata’s touring ensemble in 2017. We are delighted to welcome him back to our shores, this time as a solo pianist. The performance you will experience tonight tells the poignant story of Francesco’s journey from the heart of the Mediterranean to the moody surrounds of Ireland. Aptly described as a “musical alchemist”, Francesco Turrisi seamlessly weaves his way through many different musical styles in Northern Migrations creating his own very beautiful, evocative and sometimes elusive musical language.

Throughout June the NZCT Chamber Music Contest District and Regional Rounds are also taking place. With generous support from the Judith Clark Memorial Fund, we have offered an opportunity for accomplished participants in the Contest to perform before Francesco takes the stage in many centres around the country. These young musicians are inspiring and perfectly demonstrate our confidence in the future of New Zealand music. We are grateful to our many supporters for this tour, in particular to the Southern Trust. And particular thanks to H.E. Mr Fabrizio Marcelli, the Italian Ambassador to New Zealand for his generous assistance.Tonight’s performance by Francesco Turrisi is truly the music of, for and amongst friends. I do hope you enjoy sharing this unique musical journey.

“I consider myself a very privileged

migrant, but like every other migrant in the

world, I don’t belong where I came from anymore, and I will never fully belong

where I go…” – Francesco Turrisi

Please respect the music, the musician, and your fellow audience members, by switching off all cellphones, pagers and watches. Taking photographs, or sound or video recordings during the concert is strictly prohibited unless with the prior approval of Chamber Music New Zealand.

Francesco Turrisi has been defined a “musical alchemist” and a “musical polyglot” by the press. He left his native Italy in 1997 to study jazz piano and early music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he obtained a Bachelor and a Master’s degree. Since 2004 he has been collaborating with celebrated early music ensemble L’Arpeggiata. With L’Arpeggiata he has performed at the major early music festivals in Europe and around the world (Turkey, Russia, China) and has recorded for Virgin, Naive and Alpha. He regularly collaborates with Italian traditional singer Lucilla Galeazzi and with Irish ensembles Yurodny (Balkan music/contemporary jazz), The Gregory Walkers (early music), Resound (contemporary music), and eX ensemble (early music).

Francesco is also the leader and founder of The Taquín Experiments an ensemble that pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz, world music and early music.

He has released four critically acclaimed albums as a leader and two as co-leader on Diatribe records and on his own label Taquin records.

His latest album Grigio, features sean- nós singer Roisin El Safty, early music singer Clara Sanabras and percussion virtuoso Zohar Fresco. The album was described as “Lyrical, sensitively assembled and beautifully sung” by John Fordham in a review for The Guardian.

His vast range of collaborations includes artists from jazz, world and early music such as:

Bobby McFerrin, Dave Liebman, Gianluigi Trovesi, Nils Landgren, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Barry Guy, Gabriele Mirabassi, Savina Yannatou, Maria Pia de Vito, Theodosii Spassov, Gavin Bryars, Bang on a Can, Misia, The King’s Singers, Veronique Gens, Philippe Jaroussky, Pepe el Habichuela, Lucilla Galeazzi, Bijan Chemirani.

are not different countries but

two sides of the same mountain.”

“I first started thinking about a piano solo program about 4 years ago, when I got asked to perform a solo concert at the Hugh Lane gallery. I had flirted with that idea for a long time, but somehow was always a bit intimidated by the format.

I am used to collaborating and playing with ensembles that range from very large to very small, but being all alone on a stage is a completely different energy. There is something very introspective about performing piano solo, something about feeling very naked and exposed. At the same time there is the exhilarating feeling of being free to do whatever you want at any given moment. So it’s not a coincidence that a personal album such as Northern Migrations came about at a very difficult and transitional period in my life. A moment of big changes, a moment of pain, a moment of letting go of many things dear.

This album is a very deep and personal reflection on many things that have happened in my life until now. It’s about migration, about being far from the origins, about the nomadic life of musicians, about not belonging to a place in particular. It’s also about separation and loss,

about pain and crisis, about grief and about learning to let go.

Northern Migrations is also about the journey that has been my experience as a musician and everything I have picked up on the way. It reflects on my Mediterranean roots, on the modal melodies, instruments and rhythms that connect Sicily with North Africa. It reflects on the early baroque music which I have studied and researched while living in the Netherlands, on the harmonic and melodic ideas behind the music of the great keyboard masters of the 17th century.

It reflects on my visceral passion for jazz, the only music that I have properly studied at a conservatory, on my passion for improvisation and for living the music moment by moment. There are probably too many other influences and connections that I can’t individually pinpoint in this music, coming from my constant thirst for finding and understanding new forms of musical expression.

After 12 years of different musical projects and recordings, Northern Migrations represent a distilled version of my entire musical life.”
