Sunday, May 8, Depart for Paris

Monday, May 9, BAYEUXThis small town is the perfect place to begin your time in France. Bayeux was the first town to be liberated after the Normandy invasion, but escaped the war with little damage, allowing its charming streets to be preserved. A walk through town reveals a wealth of 15th-19th century buildings and streets lined with cafes. We will also visit the Bayeux Cathedral and spend time at the Musee de la Tapisserie, home to some of the most famous tapestries in the world!

Tuesday, May 10, NORMANDYThe site of the D-Day landing by allied forces in June 1944, Normandy is a historically rich area for all. A full-day guide will guide us through visits to Utah Beach, Pointe Du Hoc, Omaha Beach, and the Normandy American Cemetery, among other important landmarks. That night we will

stay in Mont St-Michel.

Wednesday, May 11 MONT ST-MICHEL: TOURSThe misty silhouette of Mont St-Michel is one of the most enchanting sights in France. This small island, capped with an imposing monastery, is surrounded by a huge tidal plain. We will visit the monastery and enjoy the steep, narrow, winding streets of the island and the wide open, breathtaking view over the bay. Then on our way to the Loire Valley, we will visit the Chateau de Fougeres, an 11th-15th century fortified castle with 13 towers! We will also spend time in Tours, the largest city in the Centre region of France. Here we will explore the Old Quarter, including Place

Plumereau, Charlemagne’s Tower, and St-Gatien Cathedral.

Thursday, May 12, THE LOIRE VALLEYThe “Garden of France” is a cultural landscape of great beauty, containing historic towns and villages, great architectural monuments, and lands that have been cultivated over many centuries. This is a place filled with vineyards, flowers, and rolling green hills, and dotted with more than a thousand chateaux. We will be visiting two of those chateaux, the Chateau de Blois, once the preferred residence of French kings, and the Chateau Chambord, a 400-room “hunting lodge”

for French royalty.

Friday–Saturday, May 13–14, BORDEAUXBuilt on the Garonne River, Bordeaux has been a major port since Roman times and a crossroads of European trade for centuries. This bustling modern industrial city, known for its wine trade, has an 18th century city center that is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. We will take a walking tour of the prettiest and most historic part of Old Bordeaux. On our way to Carcassonne, we will stop in Albi to visit the Cathedral of St. Cecelia and the Berbie Palace, home of the Musée Henri

de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Sunday, May 15, CARCASSONNEWe will take a walking tour of the city of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a massive medieval fortress with 53 towers! On the way to Avignon in Provence, we will stop by the walled town of Aigues-Mortes and see the Tour de Constance. On the way we will also visit the marvelous bridge of Avignon.

Monday, May 16, PROVENCEFew other towns in Provence can combine the region’s charms as seamlessly as Arles. With Roman remains, medieval streets, and famous painters who called it home, this is one of the best locations to enjoy and absorb Provençal culture. We will spend much of our time in Arles exploring the life and

work of its most famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh.

Tuesday–Friday, May 17–20, PARISNearby Aix was founded by the Romans in 123 BC. It has been known as a center for art and learning and was home to artist Paul Cezanne. We will then board a train to travel from Avignon to Paris. We will spend our last four nights and three days in the “City of Lights”, truly one of the most amazing cities on the planet. The first day we will visit the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysees, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Latin Quarter, and so much more! The next day we will visit the Musee D’Orsay and travel to the famous palace of Versailles. Our last day will take us to the Louvre Museum

(home of the Mona Lisa) and the Eiffel Tower.
