The 6th Annual France-Atlanta: Together Towards Innovation will highlight sustainable innovation and international cooperation between France and the U.S. Southeast during this two-week series of events co-presented by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and the Georgia Institute of Technology. France-Atlanta: Together Towards Innovation is an annual series of events designed to foster cooperation and exchange between the two countries in the fields of science, business, culture, and humanitarian affairs. From October 27-November 9, France-Atlanta 2015 will welcome more than 40 French and American leaders, businessmen, experts, and artists and some 3500 participants for its diverse program of workshops, panel discussions, concerts, lectures, and more. During the France-Atlanta 2015 program:

- Two scientific symposiums will gather numerous experts, scientists, and business leaders to discuss their research and experience in advanced manufacturing and solar energy in order to create new opportunities for joint collaborations.

- The Crystal Peach Awards Luncheon will celebrate foreign investments in France and the U.S. Southeast.

- Five cultural events will showcase French innovation in the fields of cinema, dance, music and

architecture. Program highlights include a talk-back with award-winning director Abdherrahmane Sissako, a contemporary dance performance by Fabien Prioville, and a contemporary music concert by Thierry Pécou’s Ensemble Variance and Sonic Generator.

- Two humanitarian events will focus on NGO stakes for sustainability and climate change

adaptation and raising awareness among young people on current humanitarian issues. Also on the occasion of France-Atlanta 2015, the city of Toulouse will send an official delegation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Atlanta and Toulouse. France-Atlanta 2015 is presented under the high auspices of the Ambassador of France to the United States, the Governor of Georgia, and the Mayor of Atlanta and with the generous support of the Honorable Anne Cox Chambers, Delta-KLM-Air France, Besharat Gallery, Arkadin Collaboration Services, Dassault Systemes, MailChimp, and France 24, in collaboration with its many local and international partners.

Seminar and Workshop on the Future of Manufacturing WHEN: October 28-29 | 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. WHERE: Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute – Callaway Manufacturing Research Center Building (813 Ferst Dr, Atlanta, GA 30332) Building upon the strong ties between Georgia Tech and Arts et Métiers ParisTech (AMPT), the leading French engineering school in the domain of advanced manufacturing, this two-day workshop will enable manufacturing experts to share their experiences in research, development, innovation, commercialization, and education in the domain of advanced manufacturing. Workshop topics include:

• Smart manufacturing processes: innovative and manufacturing processes, e.g., ultra-precision machining, additive manufacturing, printed electronics, fastener-free manufacturing, for both new and current materials

• New materials for smart and customized products, e.g., high performance alloys, advanced composites, nanomaterials, etc

• The robot and the human: Cobotic/virtual control • Friendly environmental and social factory: low energy, water and material consumption,

low waste, high level of recyclability, safe and attractive workplaces. • Digital factory: from product to factory design, virtual reality • Focus on education: Education for the factory of the Future, Master Degree and PHD.

Share of experience, attractiveness, how GT and AMP can form high level collaborators adapted to industry strategy.

On this occasion, AMPT will send a delegation of more than 20 scientists, academics, and experts to meet with their Georgia Tech and other American counterparts. It is hoped that, through this workshop, participants will identify key questions and a path forward in order to leverage their mutual strengths and create new opportunities for joint collaborations both in the United States and in Europe.

Arts et Métiers ParisTech (AMPT) is the French leading engineering school in the domain of advanced manufacturing. A member of the European platform EFFRA, factory of the future, in the core group of the French team building the European Knowledge Innovation Community‘s added Value Manufacturing, AMPT has built an alliance with the CEAtech and Cetim to accelerate both the lab-to-market time and the formation of workers adapted for the new industry challenges. The Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute brings together top researchers and thought leaders from the many varied disciplines that shape manufacturing to help define and solve some of the greatest challenges facing U.S. industry today. The Institute focuses on the complete innovation value chain — from raw and recycled resources to prototypes and finished products — and develop materials, systems, processes, education, and even policies that impact manufacturers’ performance in the marketplace. In addition, Georgia Tech President, Dr. G.P. “Bud” Peterson, was appointed by the White House to the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) Steering Committee. AMP is an initiative designed to reinvigorate the U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and to create high-quality jobs, through public-private partnership. Georgia Tech and Arts et Métiers have developed very strong ties since 1997, particularly through their respective campuses in Lorraine, both in education (double degree programs) and in research (Open Lab PSA Peugeot Citroën; GT-CNRS-UMI 2958 joint international laboratory).

Powering the World with Photovoltaics: Status and Opportunities WHEN: November 3 | 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. WHERE: Hodges Room Centergy Building at Georgia Tech Square (Suite 335, 75 5th St, Atlanta, GA 30308) French and American experts will address solar energy generation, with a particular emphasis on photovoltaic (PV) materials and devices, during this one-day workshop organized by Georgia Tech (GT) and CEA-Liten (France). An overview of the PV technology landscape in Europe and in the United–States will be presented and an outlook on future opportunities and challenges generated by recent progress in research and development will be provided. The morning session will consist of scientific and technical presentations on power generation from sunlight. After an overview of PV research and technology both in Europe and in the U.S., specialized talks will be given by American and French experts on the scientific and technological issues of power generation using various kinds of solar PV materials and devices, including crystalline silicon, thin films, compound semiconductor multijunction cells for concentrator photovoltaics (CPV), and new material platforms (organics and perovskites). Round-table discussions during the afternoon session will focus on expanding the discussion to energy storage and transport, which must be considered to further expand solar energy on a larger scale. Finally, different avenues for future scientific and technological bilateral cooperation will be explored.

“Musicas Occitanas” by Compagnie Guillaume Lopez WHEN: October 28 | 7:00 p.m. WHERE: Alliance Française of Atlanta (Colony Square, Plaza level, 1197 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta GA 30361) To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Atlanta and Toulouse, Compagnie Guillaume Lopez will perform their unique repertoire of traditional Occitan music, native to the historical Southern French region of Occitania and its vibrant capital, Toulouse. Deeply rooted in a rich musical heritage, these four talented musicians will perform folk songs and improvise tunes for an evening of celebratory fun and an unforgettable Southern French experience.

*** Guillaume Lopez started playing music at the age of 8 when he took up the saxophone and learned classical music, before moving on to traditional folk music. Today he has earned a reputation for his mastery of wind instruments (fife, flute and bagpipe) and his soulful singing. Thanks to a meaningful encounter with French writer of Occitan origin Alem Surre-Garcia in 2001, Guillaume Lopez developed his very own musical style, a unique world of traditional and improvised sounds without borders, at the confluence of sounds from Spain, Catalonia, Occitania, and the Maghreb. In 2008, he founded the trio “Somi of Granadas” with fellow musicians Thierry Roques, an accordionist, and Pierre Dayraud, a percussionist, which gave him the impetus to blend all these musical influences. A skilled musician whose goal is to pass on the memory of his ancestors and go beyond established boundaries, Lopez infuses his sensitivity to traditional music into his compositions. In constant search of musical encounters and ways to share with other artists, Lopez is a firm believer in establishing new collaborations and breaking away from comfort in order to venture into the unknown. The result is a skillful and elaborate mix between local traditions and melodies with a universal appeal.

“Time for Us” by Fabien Prioville Dance Company

“Time for Us” | American Premiere WHEN: October 29, 30 & 31 | 8:30 p.m. WHERE: The Goat Farm – Goodson Yard (1200 Foster St NW, Atlanta, GA 30318) SHOP : A Dance Workshop by Fabien Prioville WHEN: October 31 | 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. WHERE: The Goat Farm – Goodson Yard (1200 Foster St NW, Atlanta, GA 30318) French choreographer, Fabien Prioville returns to Atlanta to present the American premiere of his newest work, “Time for Us” in collaboration with Tanz Farm. Focusing on the experience of two people meeting one another, Prioville and his dance partner and wife, Azusa Seyama seek to shed light on a moment, a place, a relationship. “Time for Us” is a search for closeness, a confrontation with the dancers’ mutual histories and the struggle to leave a legacy behind. In the midst of these explorations, they look at answering life’s essential questions: How do we meet? Where do we come from with all our demands and needs? What connects us?

Fabien Prioville graduated from the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC) in Angers. He later worked with Édouard Lock and his company ‘La La La Human Steps’ in Canada before joining Philippe Blanchard in Stockholm. In 1999 he became a member of Pina Bausch´s Tanztheater Wuppertal. A freelance dancer and choreographer since 2006, he has worked with Josef Nadj and Davis Freeman, among others. Various commissioned works brought him to New York’s Juilliard School as well as to Japan and Australia.

In 2010 he founded Fabien Prioville Dance Company. Since then he has created six productions, e.g. his first solo “Jailbreak Mind” which was created in 2009 and co-produced by tanzhaus NRW and Trafó Budapest. The production successfully toured internationally and was also invited to the German ‘Tanzplattform’ in Nuremberg. His trio „NOUS“ was the second co-production with tanzhaus NRW and Trafó Budapest. It premiered in February 2011 at the festival Temps d’images. Tanz Farm is a joint vision of artists and real estate developers to establish a historic factory space as an international destination for current practices and philosophies in contemporary performance. Launched in 2012 by gloATL and the Goat Farm Arts Center, Tanz Farm has featured seminal performances by Zoe/Juniper (Seattle), Niv Sheinfeld & Oren Laor (Tel Aviv), Ate9dance company (Los Angeles), Staib Dance (Atlanta), Fabien Prioville (Disseldorf_, glo (Atlanta), Sidra Bell (New York), Amanda K. Miller/Core Dance (Atlanta), Catellier Dance Projects (Atlanta), Pierre Rigal (Toulouse) and Gustavo Rimerezsansano (Valencia) with Ballet Hispanico New York.

Introducing the work of architect and urban planner Philippe Madec, this exhibit and lecture by one of the world’s leading figures in sustainable and eco-responsible architecture invites the public to reflect on the ways to create a responsible future, in line with today’s environmental challenges and the needs of generations to come.

Philippe Madec is an architect and an urban planner by trade, and a humanist at heart. Engaged in the fight for sustainable development very early on, his conception of urban and architectural work has revolved around environmental awareness from the beginning of his practice. As an architect, he has conceived a wide range of buildings such as social and industrial housing, museums, educational and cultural amenities, water towers, individual homes, etc. As an urban planner, he has worked on very different scales, ranging from villages (mainly in France) to eco-cities (participation in the“Eco-city Zenata” project, Casablanca, Morocco). He has received

numerous awards including the Global award for sustainable architecture (2012), European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award (2013), and the Philippe Rotthier European Prize for Architecture (2011), among others. Madec is also a professor of architecture and has taught in universities worldwide including Columbia University, the National School of Landscape Architecture in Versailles, University of Montreal, and Harvard University.

Special Screening & Director Talkback: “Timbuktu” by Abderrahmane Sissako WHEN: November 7 | 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. WHERE: The Woodruff Art Center – Rich Auditorium (1280 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30309) Internationally acclaimed film director Abderrahmane Sissako will present his 2014 award-winning film “Timbuktu” during a public screening and talk-back at the 6th Annual BronzeLens Film Festival. In 2015, “Timbuktu” became the highest-grossing African film to ever open in France and the US and received worldwide recognition along with a multitude of awards (2015 Oscar Nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, 7 Césars Awards from the French Film Academy, among others). The screening is free and open to the public. Following the film, M. Abderrahmane Sissako will participate in a “Talk-Back with the Director” session, moderated by Tambay Obenson, editor of Shadow and Act from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Preceding this event, Sissako’s earlier film “Waiting for Happiness” (2002) will be screened at SCADShow on November 6 at 7:00 p.m. This screening is also free and open to the public.

Mauritania native Abderrahmane Sissako grew up in Mali and Mauritania before enrolling in the Federal State Film Institute in Moscow in 1983 to study cinema. In the early 90’s, he settled in France and went on to produce several short films. In 1998, he produced his first feature film, Life on Earth. He also produced Waiting for Happiness (2002), Bamako (2006), and Timbuktu (2014). His on-going themes often revolve around globalization, exile and the displacement of people and explore the complex relations between North and South, as well as

the fate of Africa. In 2014, “Timbuktu”, a plea against extremist Jihadist Islam, became Mauritania’s first entry to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards (2015), and won seven César awards in France, including Best Director and Best Film.

An Evening of Contemporary Music with Ensemble Variances and Sonic Generator WHEN: November 9 | 8:00 p.m. WHERE: Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech (349 Ferst Dr, Atlanta, GA 30332) Ensemble Variances, a French contemporary music group renowned for its eclectic performances, joins forces with Sonic Generator, Georgia Tech’s acclaimed chamber music ensemble in residence, for an evening of innovative music by French and American composers. The program will feature a 15-musician cast introducing pieces by American composer Lisa Bielawa (performing here as a guest vocalist), French composer Thierry Pécou (director of Ensemble Variances), American composer and percussionist Andy Akiho, and a performance of Steve Reich’s Pulitzer-Prize winning Double Sextet. The concert, a celebration of the on-going cultural and scientific collaborations between Georgia Tech and its partners in Metz, France, is part of France-Atlanta 2015 and is the kick-off event of Sonic Generator’s 10th anniversary season. The event is free and open to the public.

*** At the crossroads of different styles and aesthetics, Ensemble Variances’ musical creations are a blend of space, movement and music performed in various musical formations. Described as a “French cross-genre jazz-classical-world music” ensemble, Ensemble Variances – under the direction of founder, composer and pianist Thierry Pécou – consists of outstanding soloists and chamber musicians willing to create music around the unexpected and to experiment with it. The ensemble is in residence at L’Arsenal in Metz, France and is touring North America for the first time this fall.

Sonic Generator, Georgia Tech’s contemporary chamber music ensemble-in-residence, explores the ways in which technology can transform how we create, perform and listen to music. The ensemble, comprised of some of the top classical musicians in Atlanta, works closely with Georgia Tech students and faculty in the School of Music and elsewhere on campus to present concerts that bring cutting-edge technologies to the world of contemporary classical music. In 2014, the group made its first international appearance, performing with Orchestre National de Lorraine at L’Arsenal in Metz, France.

Climate change and humanitarian aid: local and global stakes WHEN: October 28 | 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Emory University Mathematics and Sciences Center – Room E208 (400 Dowman Dr, Atlanta, GA 30332) Climate change is an aggravating factor of humanitarian crises that poses significant challenges for government and non-government humanitarian actors alike. In anticipation of the UN global conference on climate change (COP21) that will be held in Paris in December 2015, a panel of international development professionals, climate change researchers, and policy experts will discuss past lessons and next steps to assist vulnerable populations in dealing with climate impacts. Drawing on experiences of community-based climate adaptation and global efforts towards climate change mitigation, panellists will address key questions about what is at stake for the humanitarian community. They will discuss how their respective organizations are promoting practices and advocating for policies to prevent climate-induced humanitarian crises and what they hope COP21 will achieve in terms of these efforts to save lives. This panel will include representatives from CARE’s Poverty, Environment, and Climate Change Network (PECCN), Action Contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger), Groupe U.R.D., Climate @ Emory, and Emory University’s Master’s of Development Practice.

*** CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Women are at the heart of CARE’s community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. In 2010, CARE created the Poverty Environment and Climate Change Network (PECCN) to support country offices to develop people-centered climate change programming that can be shared and replicated at national and global levels. Delivering practical, sustainable solutions with key stakeholders, they focus both on community-based adaptation and global advocacy. Action Contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger) has expertise in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster, and chronic food insecurity, carrying out programs in nutrition, food security and livelihoods, and water, sanitation, and hygiene in more than 40 countries. In regards to climate change, they are particularly focused on the impact of climate shocks on communities. Their adaptation approach is village-‐based, involving action planning with local communities and reinforcing local capacity. On the COP21 front, their participation is primarily on food security and ground testimonies. Groupe U.R.D. , a French humanitarian think tank, provides strategic advice to operational and policy-‐oriented organizations, particularly in regards to French and European policy. They do research, evaluation support and training, and their field of research includes risk analysis and resilience in relation to climate change. They have conducted studies in Haiti and Bangladesh, particularly as climate change relates to natural disasters. Climate@Emory is an inter-‐disciplinary, university-‐wide initiative to advance climate change scholarship, teaching, partnership, and engagement at Emory University and beyond. Drawing on the expertise of more than 50 faculty and staff from over 20 departments, Climate@Emory is committed to fostering broad and deep collaboration within the university, with other academic institutions, with industry and community partners in Atlanta and elsewhere, with government at all levels, across the region, and around the world.

Education series: Humanitarian work in French-speaking countries WHEN: October 27-November 9 WHERE: Participating Metro Atlanta High Schools and Universities French is the second most widely spoken language in the world, making it an important working language in humanitarian and development work. For this education series, representatives from the Carter Center, CARE and the Peace Corps will give presentations to participating metro Atlanta schools, providing insight into how their organisations use French while working to alleviate suffering in the world. Students will learn more about current humanitarian issues and discover some of the professional advantages of speaking second languages. “This education series has proved extremely beneficial to students and teachers of French seeking to better understand the professional opportunities that are available with the French language. For many students, humanitarian work is an obscure field, and these presentations have been helpful in shedding light on the missions of many of the great NGOs that we have right here in our back yard, and more importantly, informing students about what they can do to pursue a meaningful career that uses French,” said Solène Vilchien, education officer at the Consulate General of France in Atlanta.

• Created in 2010, France-Atlanta is co-presented by the

Consulate General of France in Atlanta and the Georgia

Institute of Technology.

• The first France-Atlanta took place November 29-

December 6, 2010 and brought together over 3,500

participants in Atlanta.

• France-Atlanta became an annual event in 2011 and

has since welcomed some 20,000 participants.

• Each year, around 15 French-American events are

offered over a span of two weeks in the scientific, business,

cultural, and humanitarian fields.

• France-Atlanta is presented under the High Auspices

of the French Ambassador to the United States, the

Governor of Georgia and the Mayor of Atlanta.

• It has received extensive media coverage from outlets

including CBS, ABC, Fox, Channel 26, WABE, CNN,
