1/ Présentation256 x 325 cmLavinia Fontana was a popular artist with the Italian nobility. In this, one of her most ambitious portraits, Vincenzo I Gonzaga and his wife Eleonora de’ Medici are depicted in the guise of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. This Old Testament story was chosen because the Gonzaga family of Mantua claimed ancient connections with the Queen of Sheba. Tableau 2 : The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife by Daniel Maclise

The subject of this monumental and meticulously detailed picture is the marriage at Waterford in 1170 of the Norman military adventurer Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, and the daughter of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster. The union has often been identified as representing the formal establishment of a Norman foothold in Ireland. Conceived for the decoration of the Palace of Westminster, the painting is an ambiguous representation of the victorious Normans and the vanquished Irish.

Gabriele Münter was a leading German Expressionist. In 1908, with her partner, Wassily Kandinsky, she settled in the village of Murnau in the lake district of southern Bavaria. Dated 1908, this vibrant painting is from a time when Münter claimed her work advanced greatly. The girl, perhaps a local villager, wears a high-collared white blouse and a red ribbon in her hair.
