Jeremiah 17:5-8; 1 Corinthians 15:12,16-
20; Luke 6:17,20-26
Don’t blame anyone but your-self. You have free will. You canchoose which way your life willgo. If you choose the way of God,you will find happiness, eventhough you may be required tosacrifice. If you choose the way ofthis world, you will find misery, even though you may experiencesome pleasures.
You are not a machine; you area person. You are not a slave ofyour DNA or of your environ-ment. You can’t blame yourmisery on chemical imbalance orparents or dysfunction in yourprimary society.
You can’t blame it on the devilor on others. All kinds of factorsinfluence your life, but YOU arein charge! You can say yes, or youcan say no.
Today’s Mass challenges us tochoose the way of life. We mayhave been dealt a raw deal in life, but we can choose to follow theway of the Lord. You will behappy if you realize your need ofGod, if you are sorry for yoursins, if you hunger for virtue, andif you are willing to sacrifice toobtain goodness.
You will find misery if you putyour trust in the wealth andpleasures of this world, if you arecontent with creature comfortsand are unwilling to sacrifice forvirtue, if you are so flippant nowthat you overlook your eternalgoal of life.
What is the direction of yourlife? If you are on the wrongtrack, turn around! You canchange; you can choose the right!

Fr. Don’s Doodlings Happy Valentine’s Day. OK, you’re right, that was 3 days ago. But that’s why we’re celebrating significant Wedding Anniversaries on this Sunday, closest to Valentine’s Day. It also provides the opportunity to say a word or two about the sanctity of marriage, the Sacrament of Matrimony. When we heard the beautiful Gospel about the Wedding Feast at Cana a few weeks ago, some of you heard me say that we were taught precious little in seminary studies about the Sacrament of Matrimony. Happily, for me that void was filled by the couples with whom I was leading Marriage Encounter weekends. Those married couples put flesh on the bones of the spirituality of marriage, describing how they experienced Christ in their union. The result for me is having a profound appreciation for the beauty and sanctity of marriage as a way of life, a sacramental experience of nearness, intimacy with Christ. It must be awesome to find Christ in and through your marital union with each other. It’s observable to me when I see couples who seem to anticipate each other in what they say, who have an intuitive awareness of each other, who manifest the reality of the Biblical statement: the two shall be one. Some may object that I am describing ideal conditions. To which I would object that even when there are disagreements, conflicts, divisions, the grace of the sacrament, the presence of Christ, provides the inspiration, guidance, and courage to work it out together. Couples are at their best, then, when they reach down inside for the help Christ provides, when they work together, appealing to Jesus Christ for the help they need. What is particularly sad is married couples who have a deep division in their union and do not reach out for the many professional resources that are available to help heal their union. It’s like a person who is seriously ill and refuses to see a doctor. Is it pride that prevents going for help? A reluctance to face the truth that the problem is shared by both partners? As with surgery, there may be pain, but the result may be good, wonderful, outstanding. Again, I can’t say enough about the presence of Christ that couples can call upon every day, in every circumstance, whether alone, but even better, together. So, if you have no serious marital problems, make a Marriage Encounter weekend, strengthening your union. If you have significant problems, seek counselling, or make a Retrouvaille weekend, which helps to address such problems. In all cases, give thanks to God for the gift of your Sacrament of Matrimony. Give thanks for Christ who is with you to inspire, to strengthen, to bless you both, and not just on Valentine’s Day.

has identified the need for a meal to be served to the needy on Sundays. They are asking churches to sponsor a Sunday once every 6–8 weeks. This going to begin in March. We will need interested parishioners and families to let Deborah
Schulte know if they are willing to help prepare, serve and/or clean up at Horizons on our Sunday. The meal will be served at 5:00 p.m. in the evening. Contact Deborah at [email protected] or call 217‐430‐5144.

Our assessment this year from the diocese was about $21,000, and we have collected about $4,026. Since the parish has to pay it in full, it would be helpful if you contributed a little more than $15,
which is the amount on the envelope in your packets to help make up the difference. Thanks!

The Food Pantry challenges you to give a grocery item each day of Lent to the Food Pantry. There are bags in the pantry bins at all the entrances of church with the usual items that the pantry gives stapled to them.
Take one and fill it up, then bring it to church to begin your Lenten sacrifice.

It seems like it is a long time until June, but we
have to get things moving in order to be ready! We are pleased to announce that the members of the Picnic Committee are the
following parishioners: Justin & Erin VonderHaar: 242‐5030 or 257‐9011
Mike & Erin Schrage: 653‐3977 or 440‐7469 Bill & Lori Chapman: 430‐4654 or 617‐1004 Nathan & Amy Slough: 779‐6283 or 316‐0447 Gabe & Kelly Wheeler: 653‐6265 or 779‐8322 Duke & Marsha Collins: 430‐2689 or 430‐2828
We will keep you posted on plans for the picnic as they develop. Right now, members are working on details
for the raffle and silent auction. We are needing some booth chairs to help organize workers for different booths. In the future we will be at Mass with sign‐up
sheets for volunteers. Mark your calendars! The picnic will be held June 8 from 5:00 p.m. to midnight. As in prior years, on the Saturday of the picnic ONLY, the Saturday Vigil Mass will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. instead of 4:30 p.m.

Forty Days of Giving to the Food Pantry during Lent

Our assessment this year from the diocese was about $21,000, and we have collected about $4,026. Since the parish has to pay it in full, it would be helpful if you contributed a little more than $15,
which is the amount on the envelope in your packets to help make up the difference. Thanks!

Please stop and introduce yourself. We are pleased to have you share in this celebration of the Eucharist. If you do not have a church home, or your church is not a home to you, we hope you to become part of our parish family. We are so glad you’re here and hope you will come back
again for Mass or become a parishioner. Sometimes people attend Mass a number of times before they become members of a parish. We encourage you to call the Parish Office and set a time to come and register. It only takes a few minutes.
Again, we welcome you to St. Francis Solanus!
