Fractions and Cookies
• Without a doubt, my Mom makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world and I’d use any excuse to make them (even a Math class).
• Our task today is to successfully double or triple the recipe and still produce the same great cookies!!
• This activity practices using fractions. You can use any recipe for great practice in fractions.
Single Batch
• 1 cup margarine• 3/4 cup white sugar• 3/4 cup brown sugar• 1 egg• 1 TBSP water• 1 tsp vanilla
• 1 & 1/2 cups flour• 1 tsp salt• 1 tsp baking soda• 2/3 to 1 cup rolled
oats• 3/4 cup chocolate
chips
The Task……..• We don’t want to make just one batch
of cookies, we want to double or triple the batch because these are GOOD cookies!! So how much of each ingredient do we need?
• Choose whether you want to double or triple the batch and figure out the appropriate amount for each ingredient you will need.
Double Batch
• 2 cups margarine• 1 & 1/2 cups white
sugar• 1 & 1/2 cups brown
sugar• 2 eggs• 2 TBSP water• 2 tsp vanilla
• 3 cups flour• 2 tsp salt• 2 tsp baking soda• 1 & 1/3 to 2 cups
rolled oats• 1 & 1/2 cups

all of your ingredients
• Get 2 mixing bowls, measuring cups, measuring spoons and a wooden spoon
Let’s Bake!

• Add egg(s), vanilla and water and blend until smooth
Next Step...• In a separate bowl combine
the flour, salt, and baking soda
• Slowly add this mixture to wet ingredients and mix just until blended
• Add rolled oats• Add chocolate chips ( you
can add a few extra if you want!)
Almost There...…
• Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet
• Bake for 8-12 minutes
• Cool on racks (if you can stand it)
Dig In!
• Pour yourself a nice big glass of milk and enjoy your cookies
• Bet you can’t just eat one!!
Your assignment...
• It’s Sunday, the grocery stores are closed and you don’t have enough ingredients to make an entire batch. How much do you need to make a half batch?
• Bring your recipe for half a batch of Mom’s Chocolate Chip Jumbles next day.
