Pastor’s Desk

This weekend marks my one-year anniversary of arriving atSt. Mary’s. What a year it has been! I am so grateful to you, the

people of St. Mary’s Parish, for welcoming me and helping me feel athome. I remember leaving the friary in Silver Spring, Maryland, earlyin the morning with all my belongings packed in the back of a pick-uptruck. I was full of excitement and hopes for the new adventure aboutto unfold. That sense of joy and expectation has not diminished butrather has increased during the year.

My year in Pompton Lakes has been full of happiness. There is not aday that has gone by that I have not laughed aloud at least once.Have you ever wondered what it is like to live with Fr. Kevin? It isnever dull to say the least. It is a gift to live with someone who lovesbeing a priest and a friar. He has taught me much about the virtues ofdedication and generosity. I am grateful for his patience andguidance throughout the year.

The spirit of this community is unrivaled. No words can adequatelydescribe what it was like to walk into St. Francis of Assisi Church on31st Street last Saturday morning and see so many parishioners ofSt. Mary’s celebrating my ordination with me or to be greeted sowarmly the next afternoon as I presided at my first mass. It was anamazing weekend that I will never forget. Thank you for your cards, gifts and well wishes, but most importantly for your prayers.

As I said at mass last week, you have much to teach me about God.You continue to instruct me on the power of love and forgiveness, and the need for compassion and commitment in life. As I begin mysecond year at St. Mary’s, I ask for your guidance and prayers astogether we follow Jesus’ call to bring glad tidings to the poor, to letthe oppressed go free, to provide sight to the blind and proclaim ayear acceptable to the Lord. (Luke 4:18-19)

A letter from Fr. Larry:

Congratulations,

Fr. Larry!

Ministry News

Knights of Columbus—To be a Knight means to believe in eachother as we believe in ourselves - realizing that by creating strong, socialand supportive local councils, we help create a stronger Order worldwideand ensure an even stronger future. For more information on how tobecome a Knight, call Chris Arts at 973.493.0924 or email [email protected].

What’s needed now—Beef stew, or other canned meat, isneeded, plus summer-time items, like: baked beans, mustard, relish and salad dressings. Hispanic foods, likeGoya products, are always welcomed, too.

Food Pantry - the Spirit

It’s fairly easy for me to talk about the physical or material side of ourFood Pantry: the food, the space we rent at 22 Lakeside, the box-truck we use, etc. Not so easy to understand and write about, for me,is what motivates so many people to help us do our particular job:helping to feed the hungry. We receive help in the form of cash, checks and food, and in the form of hundreds of work-hours (thetime and talent of many volunteers). But, why do they all do it?

Learning from Fr. Kevin’s story in last week’s bulletin (about theatheist helped by the Eskimos), I’ve come to believe that the Spirit ofGod at St. Mary’s has been and continues to be the reason.

Sunday Readings Scripture Reflection

Daily Readings for the Week

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Scripture

• I was his delight by day; … and I found delight in the human race (Proverbs 8:30).

• What are humans that you should be mindful of the? ...You have made them little less than the angels, and crowned them with glory and honor. (Psalm 8:5,6)

• the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1,5)

• Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. (John 16:15)

Reflection

• Is there anything of God that Jesus holds back from you?

• Is God’s Love enough? What more do you desire?

• Where do you find God’s Love? Who shows us the way?

God expects but one thing of you, and that is that you … let God beGod in you. (Meister Eckhart)

First Reading: Proverbs 8: 22-31—God created Wisdombefore he created the earth or the skies. This spirit stood beside Godevery day until the earth was complete, then "found delight in thepeople of the earth." This indicates that the spirit of wisdom waslater personified by Jesus.

Second Reading: Romans 5: 1-5—Paul says that we arenow at peace with God through our faith in Jesus. We also hope tosee the glory of God. This hope will not leave us disappointedbecause of the love God has shown in sending us the Holy Spirit.

Gospel: John 16: 12-15—Jesus tells the disciples that whenhe leaves them, a Spirit will help guide them to the truth. This Spiritwill announce what he hears from Jesus, rather than speaking on hisown. Everything God has also belongs to Jesus, which is why thosethings announced by the Spirit will actually come from Jesus.
