Dear Friends, This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends…I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.” This is a quote from today’s readings. It’s a part of John’s gospel that’s called “the Last Supper Discourse.” John placed a series of speeches from Jesus at the Last Supper as if Jesus last will and testament. It’s a great technique because it highlights the significance of these words for the Lord. This placement also challenges us to consider how important they are for us. I came across a great story that captures this challenge for today, especially in our current climate of discourse. It’s from a speech to “The Secular Coalition for America” by Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware. While Coons is an avowed Presbyterian Christian, he told the crowd that he understood their unease with people of faith. He mentioned that “religion [has] come to be so closely associated with right-wing politics” and that the Bible “has been used as a document, as a foundation, to justify discrimination.” It has, to some, become “the basis of intolerance.” Sounds like he was really playing to the crowd, doesn’t it? He then went on to share his own experience of reverse intolerance. While he was in law school, he had let it be known to some of his more progressive friends that he was a practicing Christian. In fact, following Jesus’ call to “feed the hungry”, he had gone to Kenya and South Africa to do just that. He was, to say the least, unprepared for their response as word of his beliefs got out. Some of them literally disowned me; my own roommates moved out. Several folks literally stopped speaking to me and acted as if I had lost my mind.” What he experienced, Coons said, was “real bigotry.” His friends were very tolerant except of a person of faith. But, he didn’t stop there. He went on to tell them that many of his progressive friends “had personal experiences of deep pain and of alienationthat had driven a big wedge between them and religion. From those friends, he had learned that there is enough hurt for all in every disagreement. When he thought about our founding of a form of secular governance, he said that I also think about the importance of doubt and of humility. As a person of faith, I think it’s foundational to our country that if we allow people to choose their path of faith, they must of course be also free, welcomed, and celebrated, to choose not to have faith in a supreme being.” Underneath Coons’ argument is a distinction he may not have made: faith and religion aren’t totally the same. Religion is about what distinguishes one set of people with beliefs from another. Even secular people believe they believe that there isn’t a God. Faith, on the other hand, is our trusting response to what we believe. For example, we believe in Jesus. He invites us to “love one another as I love you.” Responding to his friendship helps us to never settle for just any love. He draws us more and more deeply into his kind of love unconditional love. One of the fruits of his love is that we learn not to judge another, as so often happens when we differ with others. As we grow in Christ’s friendship, our faith in him, our trust in what he shows us about God, must lead us beyond even our religious divisions to see, in humility, what unites us as human beings: we are all children of his Father. Anything else is just religious belief. Love Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

“This is my commandment: love one another as I

love you. No one has greater love than this,

to lay down one’s life for one’s friends…I have

called you friends, because I have told you

everything I have heard from my Father. It was not

you who chose me, but I who chose you and

appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,

so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he

may give you. This I command you: love one

another.”

This is a quote from today’s readings. In fact, following

Jesus’ call to “feed the hungry”, he had gone to Kenya and South Africa to do just that. He was, to say the least, unprepared for their response as word of his beliefs got out. “Some of them literally disowned me; my own roommates moved out. Several folks literally stopped speaking to me and acted as if I had lost my mind.” What he experienced, Coons said, was “real bigotry.” His friends were very tolerant except of a person of faith. But, he didn’t stop there. He went on to tell them that many of his progressive friends “had personal experiences of deep pain and of alienation…that had driven a big wedge between them and religion.” From those friends, he had learned that there is enough hurt for all in every disagreement. When he thought about our founding of a form of secular governance, he said that “I also think about the importance of doubt and of humility. Even secular people believe – they believe that there isn’t a God. Faith, on the other hand, is our trusting response to what we believe. For example, we believe in Jesus. He invites us to “love one another as I love you.” Responding to his friendship helps us to never settle for just any love. He draws us more and more deeply into his kind of love – unconditional love. MEDITATION

Silence….But Is It Really Silent?

Irene Pena Cervantes

I hear You as You lead me

I hear You as I pray.

As I pray I listen for You.

I want to hear what you will say.

There are bird calls that I hear

And leaves rustle in the breeze.

In the silence You are near

You surround me with Your peace.

You are near me, You are IN me

You stand quietly by my side.

I look up to see Your face, Lord,

And Your arms are open wide.

There is music in my head

And in my heart I hear music play.

All creation plays its instrument

As God’s silence makes its way.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

6th Sunday of Easter

“This is my commandment: love one another

as I love you. No one has greater love than

this, to lay down one’s life for ones friends.”

– John 15:12-13

Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him

your friend? Jesus says thtat if we love Him

we should be willing to offer whatever we

have to Him, not because we want praise and

glory, but simply because we love Him.

The intention of the Holy Father for May: That, rejecting the culture of indifference, we may care for our neighbors who suffer, especially the sick and the poor.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

How is being part of a family important? How have we experienced God in family life? How do our families make our neighborhood a better place?

Let’s not keep the answers to ourselves. Let’s write a book.

Remember that being a family includes being a spouse, being a parent, being a child, being an in-law, being an aunt or uncle or cousin. Even being a neighbor. Think about a meaningful event in your family life. A moment when family really meant something special. There have been many; choose one. Maybe a major event. Maybe a day in the park. A great event; a small event. But something that says “family” to you. Write it down in your own words. It can be whatever length you need to tell the story; we have a good editorial team. Drop it into the box at the church entrance or leave it at the rectory. You can even attach it as a WORD document to an email addressed to [email protected]. We aim to have it finished and available to you by

mid-October. ….Deadline is May 18th

….But don’t wait….Tell your family story….

Families “r” us…

We will also donate $100 so that the St. Anne's food pantry can supplement our donation with other items that may be sorely needed. Let's make a special effort on this as the food pantry is in critical need, and our club can step forward to help. There will be no meeting on May 25 since it is Memorial Day, so our May 11th meeting is the date for gathering our food donations. For further information call Lucy at 201-791-3440.

Pastoral Council Minutes – April 14, 2015

The following is a summary of the discussions that took place during the Council’s meeting for April 14th: Parish Update Faith Formation Programs. Currently, St. Anne has 700 students in its various Faith Formation Programs - Summer, Sunday, Tuesday, Home Study, Family Catechesis, Neighborhood, Confirmation, and First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Women and Men’s Cornerstone Retreats. All the participants said they benefited from the retreats. Old Business

Stewardship Committee Initiative. “Super-Service Saturday” Organizations received letters about this

endeavor. Stewardship committee members will contact the organizations soon. Family members could be

included in the volunteer efforts of the day.

Welcoming Committee. An information kiosk is planned. This will be in the atrium for people attending

weekend Masses.

New Business

At the March 2, 2015 meeting it was decided to invite a representative from Fiat Ventures, a youth ministry

organization that currently provides three parishes in the archdiocese with youth ministry personnel and

programing. The beauty of outsourcing our YM needs to a company is that they provide specially trained and

motivated people to implement proven programs.

Fiat Ventures http://fiatventures.com: (Representative Jonathan Camiolo; handout given). Presently active in 7

parishes (5 full time, 2 part time) in the Newark and Paterson dioceses.

BOLD youth ministry program (Becoming Our Lord’s Disciples). Focus is spiritual, social, service.

BOLD is not a ‘youth group’, it is a youth ministry; the minister cannot work alone—there must be a team:

Advisory board of adults & Peer servant team of youth leaders

Components: Teen Night; Middle School, Senior High (both include a spiritual focus, a service-based activities;

and/or social activities); Special events (retreats, etc.)

Benefits: Training for new adult and teen leaders is held every year @ Youth Center, Kearny; Ongoing

mentorship for the youth minister is part of Fiat Ventures’ services.

It usually takes 6 months to a year to get a full-time youth ministry up & running in a parish.

We will inform our other youth-based organizations such as the School, Faith Formation & Athletic Council

if we recommend to move forward with Fiat.

Plan for Town Meeting on April 25th

, hosted by Pastoral Council

2 levels of concerns:

Needs of parish as a community

Needs of parish as a physical plant. We will also discuss the youth ministry proposal.

Closing Prayer

Meeting concluded @ 9 pm. Our next meeting will be on May 26, 2015.

We are grateful to the 1,442 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $12,378.00 in the offertory and $2,376.00 through Online Giving offertory which

along with other fees and donations totaled $18,997.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $21,026.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR

2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select

the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
