FATHER JARETT’S ~ Q & A

Is it a sin to vote for a candidate who is pro-choice? (This article does not oppose or endorse any particular candidate, it only reflects on the standard Catholic principles for voting.)

In 2006, the Catholic Bishops of Kansas released a document titled Moral Principles for Catholic Voters. This document, although, now 12 years old still correctly treats the basic principles of voting according to our Catholic conscience. To answer this question, I will be referring to what the bishops of Kansas wrote in that statement. The document can be found in its entirety at www.catholicculture.org/culture/library.

The bishops divided this document into six sections. 1. The Right and Duty to Vote 2. The Duty to Form and Follow one’s Conscience 3. Prudential Judgments on Social Policy 4. Judgments concerning Moral Evils 5. A Conscientious Voter’s Dilemma 6. Voting is a Moral Act.

Before the sinfulness of an act can be discussed it is first important to speak to the subject of conscience and the duty of all individuals to have a well formed conscience. On this topic the bishops state, “The conscience is like an inner voice that has the authority of the very voice of God. We have a serious duty to follow the guidance of conscience.” A common form of sin would be freely choosing to ignore the voice of our conscience and acting in opposition to the promptings of that voice. Each human being has a “Serious duty to properly form or teach our conscience so that it can correctly judge what is good and evil.” The bishops go on to speak about a difference in political issues when choosing a political candidate. There are issues of “Judgments on Social Policy” which certainly can affect the well-being of the community and then there are “Judgments concerning moral evils.” Examples of Social Policy would be “immigration policy, health care, and affordable housing.” The document says that in regard to these issues, “it is possible for Catholic voters to arrive at different, even opposing judgments.” Examples of issues of intrinsic moral evil would be “abortion, euthanasia…the destruction of embryonic human beings in stem cell research...Such acts are judged to be intrinsically evil, that is, evil in and of themselves, regardless of our motives or the circumstances. These issues that involve intrinsic moral evil, the

bishops say, “Catholics may not promote or even remain indifferent to them.”

In light of the above, it is a correct judgment of conscience that we would commit moral evil if we were to vote for a candidate who takes a permissive stand on those actions that are intrinsically evil when there is a morally-acceptable alternative.
