Dear Fellow Parishioners Worship is an important part of the dis-cipleship journey. In order to follow, learn from and become like Jesus as our leader, we (individually and as a community) have to worship God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) well with our whole being which is not an easy task. We come to know Jesus in worship not only by listening to his word but as in relationship just by spending time with Him. We know that relationships only grow by spending time together. Just as Jesus spent time with his disciples at the last supper and other times, liturgy offers an opportunity to spend quality time with Him. It is structured in such a way that we enter into a very unique situation handed down to us by Jesus Himself in which He is very much present and at work within us. Because of its ability to give a privileged encounter with the living God, our full, active and conscious participation is essen-tial and thereby transforms us spiritually.

The old notion that the priest does all the work was never correct because liturgy is always the work of the people as its name means. Through liturgy, we encounter, experience and become part of the life of the risen Lord as a disciple. I can remember from my earliest days of grade school, how much it meant to me to participate as fully as possible in the mass. Participation begins by pouring our hearts and souls into everything that happens within the liturgy. Responding verbally to the priest with full understanding and voli-tion is an important start. The next most important way to participate is by singing the songs and mass parts. In singing, we not only take the words and ideas into our hearts but we express them back to God with our whole heart. We know that music touches the heart in a way that nothing else can. There is almost no reason why every-one of every age, gender and ethnic origin

cannot sing. If one has a voice, one can sing. Less than 0.1% of people cannot sing in some capacity. Without singing, liturgy loses much of its power. The gestures of the mass all help to give meaning to what we do. The involvement of our bodies is a means by which we involve our whole per-son which moves from body to mind to heart to spirit to soul. We cannot affect the soul without beginning with the body. By moving from one to the other with the help of the whole Community in which the Holy Spirit is at work uniting us together in the love of the Father through Jesus Christ, we grow as disciples. We must ask ourselves, are we participating in this way and helping others to do the same? In Christ’s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor

Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) CRHP Weekend is November 5th and 6th Please consider joining us to renew your faith, your relationship with the Lord and to meet some other women in the parish. In return for your time you will truly be blessed with the peace of Christ and some new friendships. Here is what one of our past CRHP

participants said, “I didn't think that I had time for this weekend, but I signed up to be with my friend. It turned out that just the week before I had a major event in my life and the women at the Retreat listened and loved me. I had time to pray and to BE in the presence of Jesus. My healing began that weekend.”

One of the best ways to share what this weekend means is to hear what some past participants said.

What impressed me the most at the CRHP weekend was all the bonding happening among the women.” – Linda Schwaller

“At our retreat I saw the joy and peace of the women who presided over the retreat and how a year of formation had enriched their lives as Catholic women and brought them a renewed sense of love for their God. -Julie Kudcik

“Being new to the parish, the fellowship at CRHP was wonderful, and I made many new friends.” – Jeanne Rabel

“A delightful weekend and a real spark for my faith…great conver-sations, great faith sharing and meeting awesome women made for a special weekend.” – Jan Liss

We will be meeting at our Baileys Harbor site. If you have any questions, would like some more information, or would like to re-serve a spot for the weekend please call Sharon Brabson at (920) 868-2404

Help Needed We are in need of money counters and money couriers. If you think you would be interested in this task, please call the office.

Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE:

ACUPUNCTURE-DOES IT HURT AND DOES IT WORK?

Acupuncture is a technique which stimulates specific points on the body by inserting extremely thin needles through the skin. Slight pressure is felt when the needles are placed, but it is not painful. Most sessions last from 15 minutes to 1 hour with the needles in place.

Acupuncture has its roots in Chinese medicine but is being used in integrative medicine along with traditional western treatments. Some conventional medical practitioners (physicians and dentists) also use acupuncture as part of their practice. It is believed that acupuncture works by unblocking or balancing energy also known as chi. While some medical doctors remain skeptical about acu-puncture, neuroimaging has shown that it seems to calm areas of the brain that register pain and Doppler ultrasound has shown im-proved blood flow in treated areas.

Research has shown that acupuncture may help ease pain, especial-ly chronic low-back, neck or knee pain. It may also help with ten-sion and migraine headaches. The effects of acupuncture on the brain and body are just beginning to be understood. Relatively few complications are reported if done properly. When choosing an acupuncturist it is important to:

Go to a licensed practitioner.

Be sure the acupuncturist uses needles once and disposes after use.

Ask the practitioner how many sessions are needed and how much each will cost before starting.

Check to see if your insurance company covers the cost of acupunc-ture, as some do while others may not. Don’t use acupuncture to postpone seeing a health care provider about a health problem and be sure to let your primary provider know you are also using or considering acupuncture.

Worship and Music Column

In Appreciation……. Periodically during the year, this Worship & Music column is shared with Stewardship so I’m using this opportunity to combine the three and remind everyone involved in worship and the liturgy to come to the upcoming Appreciation Open House. This Appreciation event is sponsored by our parish Leadership and the Stewardship Committee; however, so many of you are involved in the liturgy, this column is an opportunity to also invite you. The heavy appetizer social is on Thursday, September 22nd from 6pm – 8 pm at our Sister Bay church. Many of you give of your time and talent in so many visible ways at our liturgies: As Sacristans, as Greeters and Ushers, as Cantors, as Readers, as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, as Musicians, as Altar Servers, as Choir Mem-bers, as Art & Environment ministers who help beautify the interiors of our churches with fresh flowers and plants and the exteriors of our churches with our flower pots and flower beds. But you might not be aware of those of you who give your time and talent in non-visible ways to help with for our litur-gies: those of you who make sure all our liturgical linens are washed and ironed for all our Masses (altar cloths, corporals for the altar, purificators for the chalices); those of you who launder and /or send to the cleaners all the liturgical vest-ments: the white albs and various chasubles and stoles; all those of you who straighten-up our churches to remove ex-cess clutter and straighten up the hymnbooks; to all those of you who are money counters; to all of you who come to the parish office on Thursdays to help with printing projects for our worship guides / or bulletin inserts….the list goes on and on. I’m sure I’m forgetting many areas and many people, but I hope this column provides you with idea of how amazing all of you are! On a personal note, I would like to single out three extraordi-nary parishioners who help me and our parish so much; with-out them, our parish would not be the same: Burnie Cerra who, as our parish Wedding Coordinator, helps tremendously with the management of all the weddings that occur in our parish. As Door County is a destination wedding area, the majority of our weddings are not of parishioners and the amount of work and follow-up is intense. Mary Gomoll, our Worship Commission Chairperson, who helps tremendously in preparations for our liturgies, music and special events; and to Michelle Piatek, our Pastoral Council Chairperson who helps tremendously in the management and follow-up of our MSP liturgical scheduling system and all our liturgical ministers. I look forward to seeing all of you involved in our liturgies in any way on September 22nd to personally thank you in appre-ciation for all you do for our parish in the areas of worship and music. Thank you and God bless you, Kathy Sedan, Stella Maris Worship & Music Minister

Parish Membership Stella Maris Parish is delighted when new people want to join our parish and gladly wel-comes them into our faith com-munity. Contact the parish of-fice.

Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please con-tact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism.

Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or bap-tized adults wishing to be con-firmed, the RCIA program is available.

Reconciliation God’s great mercy is some-thing to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God’s unconditional love in the sacra-ment of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sac-rament on the 1st Thursday of

the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by ap-pointment.

Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joy-ful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation.

Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compas-sion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encour-aged to notify the office to arrange for visits or commun-ion.
