Welcome to the April edition of the FP Newsletter Vol. 39, our monthly publication giving you all our music news!! FUSIONpresents and the Surrey Board of Trade continue to lead the way in bringing more quality music to Surrey through our Surrey Music City initiative, helping develop Surrey’s growing music economy and community! We continue to meet with various Surrey arts organizations, as well as artists, promoters, venues and representatives from the City of Surrey, and are developing strategies and programs to facilitate and encourage an increase in live music entertainment in the City. If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact us and let’s set up a meeting at our SBOT Office.

Live music continues strong at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey in the MIXT Lounge! With the great weather and longer days coming up, we’ve moved our music a little later on, starting at 7pm and ending at 11pm on both Friday and Saturday. BC’s top jazz talent perform on Fridays and established and up & coming contemporary artists entertain the crowds on Saturdays. If you’re looking for some fantastic live music on the weekend and live in the Greater Vancouver lower mainland, come on over to the Sheraton Guildford and experience the wonderful ambiance, staff and music of MIXT Lounge. If you live in Surrey, even better!! Come on down to MIXT - Surrey’s #1 Live Music Venue.

West Beach continues to be White Rock’s #1 Live Music Venue, with live music 5 nights a week from Wednesday to Sunday, with an open mic on Wednesday (6-9), our famous Blues By the Beach jam on Thursday, and the 9-year and going strong Sunday Night Jam every Sunday! Featured bands perform on our red carpet stage on Fridays and Saturdays, and all Thursday to Sunday entertainment goes from 8-12.

Ranjit “Ranj” Singh makes music with a distinct Indian-Western flair that draws on the singer-songwriter and self-taught guitarist’s love for rock music and heartfelt lyrics. He refers to his unique blend of music as “Indo-Canadian Folk”.

In the mid 80’s, Ranj started his career performing with many folk-Punjabi and Hindi artists in the Vancouver area. In the 90’s he helped form — along with his talented brothers — the influential and critically acclaimed group Dal Dil Vog (a.k.a. DDV). The group went on to win numerous awards — including CFOX‘s “Vancouver Seeds 9” battle of the bands in 1994 — and performed with artists such as Jan Arden, 54-40, Mathew Good. DDV’s unique style of bhangara/rock music led to tours throughout North America and India, a live performance on MuchMusic, 3 videos on MuchMusic, and one on MTV Asia.

After Dal Dil Vog disbanded, Ranj recorded a solo album titled Simple Man in 2008. He later brought together a group of talented musicians to form his next band, The Discriminators, with whom he recorded and released 2011’s Found a Way Home. The album delivered thoughtful lyrics and music that were inspired by Ranj’s life and his legendary mentors, Neil Young and the late Indian ghazal singer Jagjit Singh.

More recently Ranj has returned to music as a solo artist, following his recovery from a serious vehicle collision. He’s  stronger than ever and happy to be pursuing his passion for music again, often collaborating with former band members and other talented musicians to meet the needs of a given venue, event, or project.

In 2015 Ranj released his third album, the acoustic The Man Cold featuring his signature melodies and distinctive “up-stroke” riffs from his 12-string guitar.

RANJ SINGHI am constantly trying to wrap my head around how quickly technology has changed everything. Gone are the days that we buy CD’s or albums. Now it’s all about streaming. A

stereo system is now virtually a waste of space. Now we buy portable sound systems that provide pretty good sound, I must say, and stream.

Last year, I joined the tech race and bought myself a portable Bose sound system and started streaming. I signed onto Spotify and then tried to decide what to listen to first. Quite a big decision, it turned out. In the end, I went with Mark Knopfler. And whenever I listen to that Bose speaker invariably it is Mark Knopfler who I start with. Although Sultans of Swing was the first introduction, and remains the go to song for most people when

talking about the Dire Straits, it was their third album, Making Movies, that closed the deal for me. And then, of course, Brothers in Arms, became the soundtrack for my 1985. I saw Dire Straits on their tour supporting this album and it still rates as one of my favourites. At the end of the show the crew started breaking down the stage until it was just Knopfler playing the guitar. Rolling Stone rated Mark Knopfler at #27 in the top 100 guitarists, but I have always thought that was too low.

The Dire Straits catalogue is only a small part of who Mark Knopfler is. He has composed and produced 9 soundtracks for movies including for the movie The Princess Bride. He has produced albums for people such as Tina Turner and Bob Dylan and even wrote the song Private Dancer for Turner. I have the CD which features the soundtracks for 3 movies and it is, in my humble opinion, pretty darn good. He has worked for too many musicians to name, often as a session musician.

I decided that I needed to see more concerts, and have already seen a few, but the big one is in the fall when I go to see Mark Knopfler in concert at the Orpheum. It’s nice to have something to look forward to.
