A MESSAGE FROM RODNEY A. BUTLER,Chairman — Mashantucket Pequot Tribal CouncilThe Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation became a pioneer in the gaming industrywith the opening of our bingo hall in 1986. This was not only the foundation forour bright future; it was also a rite of passage. The Mashantucket Pequots hadendured centuries of hardship to persevere and thrive.

Foxwoods® Resort Casino opened in 1992 as a result of the ambitious vision andunwavering commitment of Mashantucket Pequot Tribal members. It was, andcontinues to be, a true testament to the strength of the Pequot spirit.

Today, Foxwoods is recognized as North America’s largest resort casino; it boastssix casinos with more than 350 table games and 6,300 slot machines, four hotels,38 dining experiences, 25 retails shops, the largest casino-based poker room,one of the largest bingo halls in the world, two lavish spas, two award-winninggolf courses, a comedy club, luxury bowling lanes and more.

I’m proud to celebrate two decades of growth and prosperity for our award-winning property. And, prouder still to celebrate this milestone occasion withthe Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, the Foxwoods employees, and all ourvalued guests.

Early 1600s: The Pequots had approximately 8,000 membersand inhabited 250 square miles in Western CT.

1636 – 1638: The Pequot War had a devastating impacton the Tribe; decimating the number of members andforcing survivors into slavery or under the control ofneighboring tribes.

1650s – 1660s: The Western Pequots receive reservation landat Morgan’s Point in Noank in 1651, only to have portionsof taken away in exchange for a rocky, swampy heavily-wooded inland parcel of land that no one wanted, knownas “Mashantucket”; an Algonquin word for “muchwooded land”.

1713 – 1762: The tribe endured a rapid series of landdispossessions from Noank & Mashantucket.

1793: A formal reservation boundary was formed delineatingthe remaining 989 acre reservation to 213 acres.

1856: The State of Connecticut, in violation of the 1790Federal Trade and Intercourse Act, sold at public auctionover 800 acres of Mashantucket land.

1960s: Mashantucket Pequot tribal members began returningto the Mashantucket reservation joining those living there inan effort to revive the Pequot community.

1976: With the assistance of the Native American Right Fundand the Indian Rights Association, the tribe filed suit againstneighboring landowners to recover land that had been soldby the State of Connecticut in 1856.

1983: The Pequots reached a settlement with the landowners,who agreed that the 1856 sale was illegal. The ConnecticutLegislature unanimously passed legislation to petition thefederal government to grant tribal recognition to theMashantucket Pequots.

The Mashantucket Pequot Indian Land Claims SettlementAct was enacted by the U.S. Congress on October 18, 1983and signed by President Reagan; granting the Tribe federalrecognition, enabling the repurchase and placement in trustall land covered in the Settlement Act.

Today, the Mashantucket Western Pequot Reservationencompasses over 1600 acres.

MASHANTUCKET PEQUOT HISTORICAL TIMELINE


1986: The Tribeopened a 2,100-seatHigh-StakesBingo Hall.

1987: The U.S.Supreme Court,in the famousCabazon case, ruledthat Tribes couldconduct gaming ontribal lands as longas gaming wasallowed in the state the tribe resided.

1992: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation openedthe original Foxwoods High Stakes Bingo & Casino. The facility offered 46,000 square-feet of gaming spacewith 170 table games.

1993: The Tribe negotiated with the State of Connecticutallowing for the operation of slot machines. The Tribeagreed to pay the state 25% of it slot revenues.

Today the cumulative contribution to the state has exceeded$3.29 billion.

With $240-million expansion of Foxwoods to 1.3 millionsquare feet, the property is re-introduced as FoxwoodsResort Casino, it now includes two hotels, six casinos,a theater complex, retail shops, several quick servicerestaurants, a beauty salon, health spa, and additionalgaming space.

1994: A $65 million dollar expansion added another 300,000square feet. High-Stakes Bingo received a new location, theFox Theater was expanded to 4,000 seats and the overallgaming floor expanded to 190,000 square feet.

1998: Additional conference facilities opened to createa premier location for trade shows, conferences, andmajor events.

The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Centeropened to the public on August 11.

2000: In January, total contributions to the State ofConnecticut from slot revenues reach $1 Billion.

2006: A strategic alliance with MGM Mirage gives theMashantucket Pequots new development project an officialname: MGM Grand at Foxwoods.

2008: On May 17, MGM Grand at Foxwoods openedadding a new, 826-room hotel tower, a 4,000-seat theater,115,000 square feet of meetings and convention space, fournew restaurants, upscale retail venues, exciting newnightclubs, a luxurious new 26,000-square-foot spa andadditional parking.

2010: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s $32 milliondollar state-of-the-art cogeneration power facility atFoxwoods became fully online and operational; providingcleaner air emissions along with an added reduction offifteen megawatts of power from CL&P’s distribution systemgrids, translating into significant savings for businesses andresidents throughout New London County.

May 2010: Total contributions to the State of Connecticutfrom slot revenue reaches $3 Billion.

Foxwoods Resort Casino: Total Property 6.7 million sq. ft.

Foxwoods proudly employs 8,830 full-time, part-time,and casual team members.

The tribal symbol is both a reflection of MashantucketPequot past and a symbol of hope for the future. Framedagainst the sky, the lone tree on a knoll represents

Mashantucket, the “much wooded land”where the Pequots hunted and kept

alive their identity as anindependent people. Displayedon the knoll is the signature ofRobin Cassasinnamon, the Pequotsfirst leader, following the

1637 massacre at Mystic Fort.The fox stands as a reminder that the

Pequots are known as “TheFox People.”
