A Message from our Executive Director & Board President | May 2019

Dear Friends of the Fox,

Another year has come and gone at the Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation, and we are extremely proud of what we continue to accomplish. In order to make our Annual Report more meaningful, we have updated the format a bit. Among other changes to this report, we have added patron, renter and performer comments from our 2018 season. We believe these short comments provide a meaningful window into our efforts to provide 5-star service to everyone we come in contact with on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

2018 was definitely a year of growth for the Fox Tucson Theatre. As you will see on page 2, we were significantly busier last year than in 2017. Whether it is increasing shows from 140 to over 170 shows, or increasing the number of patrons through our doors from 75,000 to over 93,000, we continue to achieve our strategic goal of becoming an ever more essential part of the Tucson entertainment scene and a major economic driver for downtown and the City of Tucson.

The great news - for the Fox, for downtown, and for all of Tucson - is that our annual budget now approaches $5 million, a seven-fold increase in the last ten years. Year in and year out, we earn about 80% of our revenue - $3.8 million last year from ticket sales, rental fees and concessions - and raise the balance of our budget (about $1 million) from fundraising from our generous supporters. While we are proud of all that we have accomplished, nevertheless we continually strive to improve. Though we continue to operate in the black from operations and fundraising, the newly required loan repayment of $89,000 to Rio Nuevo and the more than $100,000 in expenses related to the final restoration and installation of our Mighty Wurlitzer Organ resulted in a net loss for the year. We are taking specific actions to mitigate the impact of the loan payback on our profitability and expect to raise more money for the organ installation this year.

Perhaps the most exciting change programmatically at the Fox was the increased focus on our efforts to build a vibrant and energetic “Youth Arts and Culture Program.” We have hired a part-time staff person to promote these efforts, and are working hard to create an impactful and diverse set of programs for the next generation of Fox patrons. These programs include providing complimentary tickets for our family-oriented shows to young people overcoming adversity, offering special subsidies to youth-oriented non-profits who rent the theater, and have created an outreach program to Tucson teachers in order to identify arts education needs that the Fox Theatre can help fill. Finally, we have created a vibrant summer theater program for young Tucsonans.

In short, many great things are happening at the “Crown Jewel of Downtown.” Thank you for your continued support in making it all possible.

On April 11, 1930, opening night for the Fox Tucson Theatre, a pipe organ - nicknamed theMighty Wurlitzer - accompanied the night's grand festivities. It was, in essence, the very heart of the beautiful new theater. Installed to accompany silent movies, over the years it was also used as entertainment on its own. By the mid-1950s, “talkies” had replaced silent films, television became more commonplace and maintenance expenses increased. Sadly, the organ was sold off for parts.

Now, a Mighty Wurlitzer is coming back to the Fox Tucson Theatre! Our “new” organ, donated by Dr. Malin Dollinger, is being installed in its final home in the theater - completing the full restoration of the Fox Tucson Theatre! After years of painstaking repairs, 2018 was a year of intense activity, with craftsmen working throughout the year. They meticulously attended to every detail, including the intricate copper leaf outlining the contours of the organ. And now we're in the final stretch! With the community's support, we'll finish placing the organ's 3,000 pipes in the theater and reinstall the organ itself. The Mighty Wurlitzer will once again be the heart of the Fox Tucson Theatre!
