Fourth Sunday Of Lent “The Story You Finish.” THE PRODIGAL SON In the parable of the prodigal son, that which was lost has been found. It would be improper to think that this Gospel is aimed only at those who are not serving the Lord or not walking with Him. Every one of us is a sinner; therefore, every one of us is in need of repentance. It is very arrogant of the Pharisees and scribes to complain about who Jesus dines with, for they fail to cast out the beam in their own eye. It's always easy to reflect on a biblical passage and place ourselves in that scene by making ourselves the good guy. But for Lent it may be a fruitful plan to become the bad guy because, let's face it, sometimes we are. Like the father in this parable, why is it so much easier to apply mercy to one's own children or even a spouse, but yet among mere acquaintances and co-workers, acting like a Pharisee, scribe, or the complaining older brother seems more like the norm? Among us as individuals, these types of interrogative reflections will probably bring many different answers. In this parable, certainly the father represents our Lord Who runs out to embrace His wayward people who desire to come back to Him. Notice the representation of the love that comes from our Lord; He embraces the penitent even before the confession of sin. Perhaps less obvious but still evident though, is that our Lord is also represented by the younger son who haphazardly disperses his father’s estate. Christ very freely offers the riches of His Father’s Kingdom to each and every one of us regardless of how undeserved we are. The older son in the parable is placed there as a caution to us. He’s the one who thought his father’s forgiving and receptive attitude towards his younger brother was very unfair. As Jesus tells us, there is rejoicing in heaven when one sinner repents (cf. Luke 15:7). No one really knows beyond doubt who is in heaven but curiosity might make one wonder how many souls are there that lived corruptible and immoral lives. To those of us who make every effort to follow the path of our Lord, it’s tempting to consider this unfair. Saint Paul, however, asks the question: "Who has ever given Him [the Lord] anything so as to deserve return?" (Romans 11:35). Also, in that same letter are the words: "As sin reigned through death, grace may reign by way of justice leading to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 5:21). READINGS First Reading - Joshua 5:9a, 10-12 When the children of Israel finally set foot in Canaan, they renewed their covenant with God. Then the manna that had sustained them in the wilderness ceased and they ate the provisions of the promised land. Having brought them safely to their destination, God expected them to embrace the future with a new sense of responsibility. Second Reading - 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 The Corinthian Christians were far from perfect and required great patience from Paul. He writes to them of the new creation that is theirs in Christ. Gospel - Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 The familiar parable of the father with two sons is often misunderstood. THE PRODIGAL SON

In the parable of the prodigal son, that which was lost has been found. It would be improper to think that this Gospel is aimed only at those who are not serving the Lord or not walking with Him. Every one of us is a sinner;

therefore, every one of us is in need of repentance.

!READINGS!

First Reading - Joshua 5:9a, 10-12 When the children of Israel finally set foot in Canaan, they renewed their covenant with God. Then the manna that had sustained them in the wilderness ceased and they ate the provisions of the promised land. Having brought them safely to their destination, God expected them to embrace the future with a new sense of responsibility. !Second Reading - 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 The Corinthian Christians were far from perfect and required great patience from Paul. He writes to them of the new creation that is theirs in Christ. The old person and old ways are left behind, and a new person is born. Not only has God reconciled us to himself in Christ, but has made us ministers of reconciliation and ambassadors for Christ in the world. Gospel - Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

The familiar parable of the father with two sons is often misunderstood. When told as the parable of the prodigal son, it often ends when the boy comes home and is forgiven. Jesus’ point goes beyond the redemption of the prodigal to stress the failure of the “righteous” in Israel to rejoice when salvation comes to sinners. It is the parable of two prodigal sons.

OPERATION RICE BOWL: from Honduras

Two years ago, Mayra was not a star student. She was very shy in the classroom and struggled with simple math and reading lessons. She often missed homework assignments and, some days, did not go to school. Her teacher noticed and enrolled Mayra in the school’s tutoring program. In the months that followed, Mayra and Fabricio, her tutor and classmate, spent many afternoons practicing reading and writing stories together. They made up games to practice math. And when they were done, they jumped rope and played in their neighborhood. In the process, the two became good friends. “Fabricio never looked down on me because I had trouble learning,” says Mayra. “He always treated me well.” The extra attention was what Mayra really needed. She lives with her grandmother, Lucia, who works hard to take care of Mayra. She picks coffee on a nearby farm and does laundry to earn money to put food on the table. But this means she doesn’t always have time to help Mayra with her school work. In fact, like many people her age, Lucia cannot read. That’s why Fabricio’s help was so important. Today, Mayra is proud of her reading and math skills. She does her homework and goes to class on time. She is more confident and has a new group of friends. Mayra wants to be a teacher one day. But first, she will become a tutor so she can help her classmates-just as Fabricio helped her.!

MAHALO+

Mahalo to Mission speaker Father Jack Stoeger and to all those who volunteered to make our Lenten Mission such a success. If you are interested in continuing in prayer and reflection during the season of Lent, Father Jack recommended the book by Pope Francis entitled The Name of God is Mercy.

OPERATION RICE BOWL Call to Family, Community and Participation

Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Call to Family, Community and Participation, we remember that human beings are social by nature-we need each other. We, like the early disciples, are called to come together and grow as a community-whether that community is in our classroom, workplace or family We journey with CRS Rice Bowl to the Central America country of Honduras, where we meet students who are learning that it’s better to help your neighbor learn and grow than to leave him or her behind. To whom are we called to extend a hand this week? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. See the story on page 3 of the bulletin or go online to view the video.

YOUTH&&&YOUNG&ADULT&MINISTRY&ANNOUNCEMENTS&

Are you between the ages of 18 – 39, in college, married or single and wish to grow more in your faith? The Sts. Peter & Paul Young Adult Ministry cordially invites you to the Young Adult Community which meets Sundays at 7:00 p.m. after the 6:00 p.m. Mass. !!

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sunday, March 6, is Family Mass at 9:00 a.m. During the Family Mass, the homily is addressed to families and to the children, giving them a better understanding of the Scripture readings. The children read Scripture that is from a Children's Lectionary. They are similar to the readings found in the Breaking Bread, but in simpler language. (The next Family Mass will be March 27, Easter Sunday) We encourage families involved in our Faith Formation and all families in our parish community to attend Family Mass. There is dismissal for Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on the other Sundays. Father will invite the children forward for a blessing. The children proceed to the reception area where a church like atmosphere is provided for them to hear the Word of God through prayers, song and readings that they are able to better understand and learn how to be disciples of Jesus. Children will rejoin their families at the Preparation of the Gifts (Offertory). ********* *Children and families in our Faith Formation Ministry will join our Kapuna for the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 11th at 6:00 pm.!
