A CALL TO HOLINESS

BY POPE FRANCIS

126. Christian joy is usually accompanied by a sense of

humour. We see this clearly, for example, in Saint Thomas

More, Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Philip Neri. Ill

humour is no sign of holiness. “Remove vexation from

your mind” (Eccl 11:10). We receive so much from the

Lord “for our enjoyment” (1 Tim 6:17), that sadness can be

a sign of ingratitude. We can get so caught up in ourselves

that we are unable to recognize God’s gifts.[101]

127. With the love of a father, God tells us: “My son, treat

yourself well... Do not deprive yourself of a happy day”

(Sir 14:11.14). He wants us to be positive, grateful and

uncomplicated: “In the day of prosperity, be joyful... God

created human beings straightforward, but they have

devised many schemes” (Eccl 7:14.29). Whatever the case,

we should remain resilient and imitate Saint Paul: “I have

learned to be content with what I have” (Phil 4:11). Saint

Francis of Assisi lived by this; he could be overwhelmed

with gratitude before a piece of hard bread, or joyfully

praise God simply for the breeze that caressed his face.

LLAMADO A LA SANTIDAD

POR EL PAPA FRANCISCO

disfruta […].

Padre Thi Pham, SCJ.

Pastor / Moderador.

Dear Parishioners:

During the Season of Advent we repeated the refrain: “Wait for the Lord, whose day is near. Wait for the

Lord, be strong, takes heart.” It reminded us that Advent is a season of waiting in anticipation of the

coming of the Lord of Light, the Prince of Peace, and the Shining Star that guides us.

We now follow that Star to Bethlehem as did the Angels, the Shepherds, and the Wise men did long ago.

We courageously look at the world through the light of that star, the light that shines forth in the darkness

of violence, hatred, intolerance and greed.

We take heart in the signs of hope that Star shows us: high school students saying “Enough” to the violence

in their schools; people of good will reaching out to those in need; communities working together to make

their neighborhoods safer for their children.

As we follow that Star of Christ may we also be the Light of Christ to those we meet. May we then

joyously proclaim with the Angels: “Glory to God in the Highest, and Peace to His People of Good Will.”

May you have the Spirit of Christmas which is PEACE, the Joy of Christmas which is HOPE, and the Heart

of Christmas which is LOVE.

In the heart of Christ,

Fr. Thi Pham, SCJ.

Pastor/Moderator.
