FOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association Volume XXXI, #2 Summer 2020 President’s Message Hello to all! We have all had a very unexpected summer as COVID-19 has taken over almost everything. We have seen the World Horseshoe Tournament cancelled and the Winnemucca Horseshoe Tour tournament cancelled. We (Idaho) cancelled all of our early tournaments in April and March, Washington state has cancelled all of their tournaments, major sporting events have cancelled, I could write this entire article on the closure of the United States because of this virus. What a mess. We are fortunate that we have been able to pitch in some Idaho tournaments. The State Doubles tournament had 22 teams this year. Brian Poole and the Pocatello Club did a great job hosting. The classes were competitive, the weather was almost perfect, and we were able to pitch a double round robin where most teams pitched 10 games. Congratulations to all who won their division! This year saw the start of on-line tournaments; I have played in 3 of these tournaments. They are a little different in that you can pitch at home with no pressure and submit your scores. The averages tend to be a little higher due to pitching with less pressure and fewer distractions. The one advantage I found for me with online tournaments was that it made me get out and practice more than I have in any other year. We have had to relocate the State Singles tournament due to COVID. If you have not heard, it will be held in Pocatello at Ross Park. Details are in the adjacent column. Keep Pitching those Ringers! Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association

Volume XXXI, #2 Summer 2020

President’s Message Hello to all! We have all had a very unexpected summer as COVID-19 has taken over almost everything. We have seen the World Horseshoe Tournament cancelled and the Winnemucca Horseshoe Tour tournament cancelled. We (Idaho) cancelled all of our early

tournaments in April and March, Washington state has cancelled all of their tournaments, major sporting events have cancelled, I could write this entire article on the closure of the United States because of this virus.

State Meeting: Saturday, September 12, after the first group has completed pitching. Business agenda includes election of ISHPA President and 2nd Vice President to two-year terms and the $100 award for recruiting the most new members.

Other Details: Lunch will be provided, the normal potluck lunch was cancelled, Subway sandwiches will be provided. Any new member joining the Association after August 1 must pitch in 1 tournament to qualify for the State Tournament. Our Bylaws state that members must have pitched in a minimum of 2 tournaments the past 12 months, unless approved by the Executive Committee. Due to COVID, the Executive Committee has made the decision to change this requirement to 1 tournament for this year for everybody because so many tournaments were canceled.

Rules for State Singles: shirts must have last name professionally lettered on the back (state is optional, but note that state is required for the World Tournament), shirts must have sleeves, no open-toed shoes may be worn.

Dollars and Sense

Wow, what a year this 2020 has been! Many things have changed our lives; the virus had us all shut in for a while. It's still out there, so everyone please use common sense and we will all make it through.

The new e-shoe program is up and running. If you go to web site //NHPA-eshoe.com

you can type in a pitcher’s name and see their stats. You can also pay your dues there online now. Payment goes through PayPal with a little extra charge, and it's easy. Or, you can also pay your local secretary who then turns the money over to me. A new player can register at the e-shoe site, but I would prefer you contact me to get an Idaho member number (begins with “08”). If new players use e-shoe to register, it will give you a generic number. The number assigned to you will be your number no matter if you live in Idaho or not.

I understand that many of you are having problems finding your current ringer percentage. Here is a way to do it.

Go to //www.horseshoepitching.com

Click on the “Statistics” tab shown across the top and pull down the drop-down menu

Stat Search

ID

then look for your name and number

Click on your member number, and you will be shown all the tournaments you have entered within the past 12 months with your current ringer percentage displayed on the bottom.

There is a lot of good information on the NHPA national web site. There are also several horseshoe pitching related groups on Facebook that you can join and see what is happening all across the country. Many people are putting on online tournaments. Several of us have done a few of these tournaments, most are sanctioned and can be done on any sanctioned court. Check out the Facebook groups, such as “National Horseshoe Pitching,” “Online Horseshoe Pitching,” “All About Horseshoe Pitching,” and “Promoting Horseshoes.” Just type “horseshoe pitching” in the search box and several groups will come up. Also, don't forget to join our Idaho State Horseshoe pitching group. Good information about tournaments are posted on it. We also have our

own web site; it is: //www.pitchwithus.com/Idaho where you will find our “Four Dead” newsletters, our by-laws, Hall of Fame information, the tournament schedule, and statistics on the tournaments that have been held. But only if I get the tourney info from the clubs! Tournament Directors, please make sure I get your tournament information as soon as possible after your tournament is completed. NATSTATS are updated on Wednesday nights, and ringer averages need to be current for the next weekend’s tournaments.

It seems more and more things are going online now. Soon there will be an update on our stats system which is called HS Masters. The NHPA is coming out with new things all the time.

If you have any questions you can always call me at 208-484-4685. I will try to answer any question and, if I can't, I'll get an answer for you.

Our State Singles tournament will be in Pocatello on Sat-Sun, September 12-13. Please register for State by calling Rodney or me by 6 PM MDT on Thursday, September 10.

Rules for State Singles require pitchers to have their last name (state is also needed at World) professionally lettered on the back of their shirt and NO open-toed shoes are allowed.

That's all for now. I hope to see you all at State.

Carol Plummer ISHPA Secretary/Treasurer/Statistician 208-484-4685 [email protected]

Hall of Fame Report

Inductions into the ISHPA Hall of Fame (HOF) are made in even-numbered years at the State Singles tournament. The Panhandle Health District in northern Idaho limited gatherings to no more than 10, so the state tournament moved from Coeur d’Alene to Pocatello. We had planned on inducting a highly qualified local individual into the HOF this fall. At this point, I am unsure how we will proceed. More information will be forthcoming in our next newsletter issue.

NHPA Delegate Report

by Kay Keskinen

At a World Tournament hosted by the NHPA, in addition to the horseshoe pitching competition, there also is a business meeting with delegates from the charters. Even though World was canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the NHPA still needed to conduct business.

The NHPA chose to use “Zoom” software to hold a “virtual” meeting such that delegates could see, hear, and speak on issues over the Internet. It was my honor to represent the ISHPA at the Saturday, July 18 “Zoom” delegate meeting to hear the financial reports, discuss and vote on rule and bylaw changes, vote for three officer positions, and hear brief reports on other issues of interest to the various state charters.

The meeting was called to order at 10:15 AM PDT with a roll call of states. All states except for Alabama and Georgia were present, with 68 total delegates attending. It took three screens of 25 faces on each to be able to view all the delegates on my PC. I took a photo of my screen; some names and faces you may recognize are these: me

in the top row, second from left; Brian Poole in the top row, fourth from the left; Jerry Smith in the second row, far right; and Phyllis Quist (WA) in the middle of the bottom row.

The number of state delegates is based on membership in 2019. Note that in 2018, the ISHPA had 80 members, which got us one delegate. Our 2019 membership increased to 112, so we earned two delegates. (Most states lost members.)

After adopting the rules of this “virtual” meeting, we approved the 2019-2020 FY Financial Report. The presentation for the 2021 World Tournament in Winnemucca, NV was replaced by a video that will be sent later.

The first main business was to review, discuss, and vote on one Bylaw change and four rule changes. First was Bylaw change PBC 1 which would raise dues for Juniors from $5 to $10. After discussion, delegates were to e-mail their votes to NHPA President Stu Sipma and NHPA Sec/Treas Jim Kinney. [Bylaw vote failed: 21 Yes, 47 No]

The first rule change considered was PRC 1, Appropriate NHPA Member Conduct, regarding dress code. The rule change affected shorts and revealing clothing. After discussion, delegates were to e-mail their votes. [Rule failed: 3 Yes, 65 No] The second rule change was PRC 2, which would allow Championship Play divisions for Junior Cadel Boys and Junior Cadet Girls, if the field were large enough. After an amendment was made, delegates were to e-mail their votes on the amended rule change. [Rule passed: 63 Yes, 5 No]

The third rule change was PRC 3 which dealt with foul shoes that may disturb live shoes. After discussion, delegates were to send in their votes. [Rule failed: 37 Yes, 31 No; a 2/3 vote was needed to pass]

The last rule change was PRC 4 which dealt with Championship Classes for Charters and States and allowing mixed play (men and women) pitching in the same Championship Class. Brian and I both spoke to this rule change since Idaho (and other small states) cannot always field at least 4 entries in a championship class. After an amendment that clarified that mixed play did not mean “mixed distances,” delegates were to e-mail their votes. [Rule passed: 55 Yes, 13 No]

At 11:34 we moved on to the NHPF (Foundation) report which led into the election of three NHPA officers. There was no competition for these positions, so by acclamation the following were elected: Laurie Lampkin as 2nd Vice

Page 4: FOUR DEADFOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association Volume XXXI, #2 Summer 2020 President’s Message Hello to all! We have all had a very unexpected

President, Wayne Callicoatte as 4th Vice President, and Jim Kinney, Jr. as Secretary-Treasurer.

We reached Open Discussion at 11:44 at which time Stan Griggs presented the idea that the NHPA could print different sets of 12 sports cards (think baseball cards) featuring Men’s World Champions, Women’s World Champions, and “contenders” (came close, but no championship). A set would cost $9.96 to print and would sell for $20. Delegates were to let Stu and Jim know if they thought the sets of WT cards would sell.

Another concept brought forward was to change trophies to plaques at World. Also, should the cost of the division photo be included in the WT registration fee? Delegates were to e-mail feedback on these three concepts (trading cards, trophies or plaques, and photo costs) to Stu and Jim.

Blaine Scott, Newsline Editor, asked if people had ideas of pitchers to feature (especially the very young or the very old) in the newsletter, to send information to him.

It was noted that this year’s NHPA membership is 5,502, down from about 7,654 (my notes don’t have the exact number) from last year. That is a lot of lost income w/o 2,000 members. There was brief discussion about what the various states were doing about their state tournaments given the coronavirus pandemic; some have canceled, others are waiting to see if the tournaments can be held. The last item of note was that Stu Sipma announced that this will be his last term as NHPA President; he will not be running for re-election.

From my personal perspective, I thought the “Zoom” meeting went well. We stayed on topic as we moved through the agenda. I got to “see” the NHPA officers in action, and I need to add that I was impressed with the caliber of the women and men who lead the NHPA. We are lucky to have so many dedicated individuals working to advance our sport and its organization. Plus, Idaho has Brian Poole and Jerry Smith serving as NHPA officers. My thanks to Brian and Jerry for all that they do.

The delegate meeting was adjourned at 12:15 PM.

“Four Dead” Turns 30!

The first issue of the ISHPA newsletter “Four Dead” was published in 1990. In addition to the newsletter being an important tool to inform and connect members, its issues also serve as a historical record of ISHPA events.

With members living throughout Idaho’s nearly 84,000 square miles and its two time zones, connecting members has always been a priority of the newsletter. We can see members in person at our local charter meetings and tournaments and more members at our state doubles and singles tournaments, but there are many we rarely see.

The masthead of the newsletter has changed along with the editors. I encourage you to check out past issues of the newsletter which are linked on the ISHPA web site. There is some fun history there. Several issues are missing, so if you come across some missing ones, please contact me and I will work with you to get the old issues online.

Collecting articles and photos and then editing the issues take a lot of time and energy. Here is the list of those who have served as editors of the newsletter: Jim McCue (1990-1998), Linda VanGorder (1998-2000), Jonell Goss (2001-2003), Jean Tarr (2003-2004), Jerry Smith (2005-2013), and me (2013- ).

Happy 30th, “Four Dead!”

“Pep Talk Corner”

Maybe your shoe ringer percent has fallen off somewhat, likely from lack of practicing due to high summer temperatures or due to parks closed because of COVID-19. So when we’re able to regain access to courts, here are a few tips to help you get back to “what’s normal to you.”

The head is “the base,” what it thinks and what it does (movement) affects the rest of the body! Move the head—Move the eyes—Move the head—Move the shoulders—Move the head—Move the arms—Move the hips—Move the step.

You need to know what you’re doing right before you can know what you’re doing wrong! So try to work on keeping your "head and eyes STEADY" so that your shoulders will stay square above your hips, trying at the same time to "keep your Non-Pitching arm tight to your side," with your non- pitching hand on the knee of your stepping leg and "Critical Point" non-stepping shoe at stake. Take your step in line to the opposite stake!!! Step Right---Shoe Goes Left---Step Left---Shoe Goes Right, your arm swing goes off line behind the hips. Shoe goes Right---arm swing goes away from hip--- Shoe Goes Left. So keep in mind "The Head Rules"----- Move it and everything else moves out of sync, out of balance, out of rhythm.

Don't forget extension, and follow through, along with "Height."

Hope to see you all at the State Singles tournament in Pocatello.

As your Regional Director, I will be doing a shoe check at State Singles to see if you are pitching with legal horseshoes. You will want to know this if you go to the World Tournament next July in Winnemucca, Nevada.

Last Shoe Glen H. Wessel

September 12, 1956 – June 21, 2020

Glen Wessel of Coeur d’Alene passed away at the age of 63 from a motorcycle accident in Montana. He was the president of the Kootenai County Horseshoe Pitchers Club who organized since 2007 many horseshoe pitching tournaments, including several state singles. Glen was well-respected both as a pitcher and a person. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Arrangements are under the care of the Lake Funeral Home and Crematory in Polson, Montana.

“Amazon Smile” and the NHPF

Do you use Amazon for shopping? If so, please use AmazonSmile with the NHPF (the Foundation for the NHPA) as the charity of your choice when you shop. A small portion (0.5%) of your purchase will be donated (at no extra cost to you) to the charity.

Start at the web site //smile.amazon.com to log in and you will be prompted to add the charity you want your donation to go to. The donated amount of each individual’s purchase may seem like a small amount, but over time with your donation added to that of others, it all adds up.

For example, when Casey Sluys (NHPF Director) logged on in May, he saw “Your current charity National Horseshoe Pitchers Foundation has received $645.78 as of May 2020

Thank you all!
