GREETINGS FELLOW
LEGIONNAIRES:
We are winding down with our
Motorcycle raffle that will be given away on Labor
Day at Iron Town (Old Hal’s) and need your help in
purchasing tickets and volunteering to help sell
tickets. You can contact Mike Cannon and get on the
schedule to help sell tickets where we display the
bike. Purchase your tickets from the bar tenders at
any time or at the locations where the bike is.
Remember, if you win the bike it can be repainted at
no cost to you to your own theme, as opposed to the
current paint job. Also, if you don’t ride, you can sell
it for a very nice profit.
Mark your calendars for the 3rd annual October Fest
on October 29th, 11:30 till 4:00. 150 lb. pig, German
potato salad, red cabbage, sauerkraut, German deserts
(By the Auxiliary), and German music. Don’t forget
that I will be awarding $200.00 this year to the best
voted German Costume. And, last but not least,
German beer and “Asbach Uralt” shots or mixed with
coke or the mixer of your choice.
We are in the process of reviewing our drink prices
and will hopefully institute the lower prices starting
the first of September or earlier if we can. Pass the
word!!
Please help support our 2nd and 4th Friday Fish Fry’s
by coming to eat and or volunteer to help out either in
the Kitchen or on the floor. Contact Lylette Smith to
get on the volunteer list.

volunteer and help raise funds for our post.
Take notice of our new glass rinser’s at the beer tower
locations. We now rinse each glass prior to serving the
drinks to insure any soap residue from the washer is
removed for a better tasting drink. Glasses are also
rinsed prior to being placed in the glass freezer.
The only comment I can make about the current
Lawsuit is it is making our finances strained!
Sometimes you wonder about disagreement. You can
hate the other party. You can think they’re the worst
thing that ever happened to the operation. But, then
you work harder to win the next election. When you
consistently reject the results of elections that you
don’t win, what you want is a dictatorship. Your very
own dictatorship!!
What does disagreement really mean? It means that
they don’t accept the results of any election that they
don’t win. It means they don’t believe that transfers of
power are determined by elections!
If only we all could live by the old song “Don’t worry,
be happy”, and let the driving to us (If you believe in
your leadership).
AND GOD SAID:
Choose for your Tribes wise, understanding, and
experienced men, and I will appoint them as your
heads.’
Until next time Comrades, pray for our well-being.

V.A. News & Info:
1- To pay lasting tribute to the service and sacrifice of
Veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers
benefits for burial in a VA national cemetery or a private
cemetery. Qualified Veterans receive a government-
furnished headstone or marker, grave liner, perpetual care of
the gravesite, burial flag and a Presidential Memorial
Certificate. Spouses and other eligible family members may
be buried in VA national cemeteries as well.
2- The House Veterans Affairs Committee wants to extend
Agent Orange disability benefits to 90,000 "Blue Water"
Navy veterans of the Vietnam War by raising funding fees
under the VA home loan program — but will disabled
veterans be shielded from a funding fee, as the committee
claimed last month? An organization called the Veterans
Association for Real Estate Professionals (VAREP) argues
otherwise.
3- The Department of Veterans Affairs recently marked its
go-live date for a policy shift that now allows qualified
practitioners to log in to VA's telehealth system and see
patients without regard to state rules and regulations. The
VA delivers telehealth in clinical settings and in the home. In
VA clinics, patients and local caregivers and technicians can
connect with remote physicians and specialists, giving
patients access to providers across the VA system. Also, the
new VA Video Connect application allows in-home users to
connect with doctors, mental health specialists, nurses and
others to conduct medical visits, follow-up care and
psychotherapy. VA Video Connect is available to Android
and desktop users via the VA's website and to iOS users via
Apple app stores.
4- H.R. 299, The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act,
passed unanimously out of the House June 25, with a vote of
382-0. The legislation will extend disability benefits
covering medical conditions associated with Agent Orange
to Blue Water Navy veterans. The Agent Orange Act of
1991 excluded those who served on ships off the coast of
Vietnam known as ‘Blue Water’ Navy veterans. H.R. 299
would extend these benefits to the Blue Water Navy
veterans. H.R. 299 will now go before the Senate for a vote.
5- The Department of Veterans Affairs has created VEText,
an interactive mobile solution to remind veterans of
upcoming appointments via text messaging. Beginning Oct.
1, veterans throughout the nation will be receiving
interactive VEText appointment reminders on their mobile
devices. Many are receiving reminders now. Make sure your
VA medical center has your current cell phone number.
6- Military retirees should soon find a postcard in their
mailboxes reminding them that TRICARE's retiree dental
program will shutter later this year. This change is due to a
law passed in 2017 which allows military retirees to access
the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program
(FEDVIP), which also lets retirees purchase vision
insurance, an option that is not otherwise available through
TRICARE.
7-Troops with 16 or more years of service will no longer be
permitted to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to
a spouse or child starting next year, Defense Department
officials announced recently. Currently, troops who serve a
minimum of six years and commit to serving an additional
four years are eligible to transfer the education benefit to
their dependents. Some who agree to the four years but are
barred from completing it, such as troops who are injured
and medically discharged, are permitted to keep the transfer.
Others who start the process after getting injured can request
a waiver so the transfer can go through. But starting July 12
of next year, troops will need to start the GI Bill benefit
transfer process between six and 16 years of service,
the policy update states.
Please Remember………. That all gave some, but many
gave all!

Chaplain’s Corner... By Harvin Abrahamson, 414-462-0097
There are probably many times when
you remember you have a verhy
important engagement (business
meeting, a wedding, etc.) only to find yourself angry
and upset because you have driven into a traffic jam.
The frustration grows and finally a solution presents
itself. You find an exit and travel a completely
different route to your destination, or, resolution comes
in a form of a friendly patrol officer who allows you to
make a U turn across the grass median and you back
track to an exit where you negotiate your route and
reach your goal in a roundabout way, which often turns
out to be a pleasant driving experience.
We are like in many ways (“Are we there yet?”), a
society seeking instant gratification. We know that if
we always get what we want immediately, we never
mature; so when we are forced to travel through life in
roundabout ways, God has time to nourish, mature and
strengthen us, finally allowing us to reach wonderfully
new destinations.
Consequently, if we at times become frustrated, we
need to accept and call upon God our leader.
Respectfully,
Harvin Abrahamson, Chaplin
1st Vice Message By John Frailing, 414-331-8659
Greetings Post 449 Family,
I would like to bring you up to speed on a few changes that have been made regarding Post Officers. With the approval of the Executive Board, I have resigned as 2nd Vice Commander and have been approved to take on the position of 1st Vice Commander. Likewise Mike Diagle has reliquished the 1st Vice Commander position and is the new 2nd Vice Commander. The main reason for the change is that we will now have a better qualified person serving in each position.
I'm a 19 year member of The American Legion. I transferred into Post 449 about 4 years ago from Post 199 in St Helena, CA. I am a graduate of the Wisconsin American Legion College as well as from ALEI. I also served as the Adjutant for Post 199, achieving 100 percent membership renewal in each of my three years serving. I currently am an Honor Guard member and assist Dick Strehlow as Assistant Service Officer. Rich Baczek and myself also maintain the rifles used by the Honor Guard. I'm looking forward to meeting many more of you, my fellow Legionnaires in the weeks and months ahead.
Finally I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't encourage each of you to send in your 2019 dues and continue to sign up a new member or two.

The President’s Message By Pat Mustapich P) 262-617-3817 [email protected]
First of all I would like to send a belated Hap-
py Birthday to all the Auxiliary Ladies and
juniors who had a birthday in July. Happy
Birthday to the Ladies and juniors who have a birthday in August.
I hope you had or have a wonderful day. You all deserve it.
The convention was in Oshkosh this past month. It was the first
American Legion one that I have attended. There was a lot of
information one could pick up on Friday, during a break out ses-
sion. Some of the information is regards to Publicity, junior activ-
ities, Parliamentary Procedures, etc. to name a few. Along with
this, there were information tables for our veterans, raffles, and
items from a few vendors to purchase. Congrats to Sam Catura,
who was installed as our District President. I know she will do a
fantastic job. Some of the other district officers are Lylette Smith
1st Vice, Kitty Larkin Secretary and Bonnie Picszczek Sargent of
Arms. Congratulations to all.
I have been meeting with a couple of our auxiliary members with
regards to fund raising. They have a great idea. At this time, I
cannot elaborate since the executive board has not met yet. We
met on the 31st of July.
It is not too early to think of Christmas and the kid’s party, which
is the 2nd weekend in December. As you go out shopping be on
the lookout for some toys to donate. Remember that the toy,
book, gift card, should be at least $10 regular cost. We will be
collecting those stuffed animals too. You can start bringing them
to the September meeting. There will be boxes to which you can
put them in. You will be able to tell.

OK- Get Ready for a whirl-wind year. It is time to turn
things around and everyone start thinking positive
thoughts ENTHUSIASTICALLY!
If you are an American Legion Auxiliary member PLUS you want to have
fun PLUS you are focused on our mission PLUS you will work that
mission remembering “Service not Self”, add together and then multiply
that by over 400 members and what do you get? A high-quality unit that
tops all others in the state of Wisconsin. Unit 449 – get Enthused! We can
do it if we work as a team.
I will have the 2019 membership cards at the August meeting. So, what
are you waiting for? Bring the dues to the Post and drop them in an
envelope to my attention in the blue boxes located at the front and back
entrances. OR bring your dues to the August meeting and hand them to
me. OR you can pay on line by visiting the national website:
www.ALAforVeterans.org and go to the members only tab, create a
log in ID if you don’t already have one. OR call National direct @ (317)
569-4500 Mon-Fri 7am to 3:30pm. This is a preferred way if you want to
pay for more than one family member at a time. I will be sent a report
from National to inform me and then I will provide you with your 2019
card. OR you can mail your renewal directly to me: 4660 N 69th St
Milwaukee, WI 53218
Any questions call: (414) 418-0289 and leave a message. I am not able to
take calls at work and I will get back to you as soon as possible. You can
also email me: [email protected] and I will get back to you.
Remember: Seniors (over the age of 18) dues are now $30 Juniors (under
the age of 18) now $5.75
Our Veterans need us, and they will always need us. Our dues help not
only our local unit but State and National support the Veterans. Together
we need to build a stronger unit and continue to “just ask” others to join us
to ensure all Veterans now and in the future are receiving the benefits they
deserve.

Greetings to all Legion Family members,
I wish to let you know that for the most part, our
squadron, had a very successful convention. First,
we presented Detachment Commander Sherman
with 83 new and renewal memberships along with
a check for $747.00. So congrats to those of you who signed up for
our 2 year plan last year. You not only saved yourself a few
dollars, but you helped us look good in the renewal dept. Next, we

Our next S.A.L. meeting is on September 4, 2018…. I would
like to ‘THANK’ everyone that came out and supported our 4th
of July celebration. It’s good to know that you people support
your S.A.L. at this function. The money raised will go to the DE-
FENCE fund that will make our patio look great again. By the
way, whomever donated those trees with lights on the patio,
good call and Thank You. As we are planning our next
S.A.L.outing in August at the Miller Tour , please ask those
from last year’s Pabst tour, how much fun we had. It was my
pleasure to tell people of my past knowledge of Pabsts history in
all those old buildings. A signup sheet will be posted in the front
hallway for those who want to attend. More can be found in
Mike Pooks column to what we are planning.

My Two Cents... By Mike Pook, Squadron 449 Finance Officer
Oshkosh was the host of 100th State Convention
for the American Legion. The Sons met Friday
afternoon thru Saturday until 3pm with voting at
noon on Saturday. The Convention is modeled
after the political conventions; each squadron sends delegates
according to their membership size and/or has delegates at
large. The Convention has standing committees that can make
recommendations for change in the origination, they report on
numbers that were submitted by the squadron’s yearly reports and
recognize their accomplishments. This year Squadron 449 received
8 awards. The convention also has committee meetings, business
meetings, and election of State Officers. Squadron 449 presented a
check for $3500 raised from the June 2 Josh Dog Fundraiser. This
is Americanism in action!
SAL 449 can send about 20 delegates to convention. IF we wanted
to, we could put our people in the standing committees and force
change within the organization. In addition the candidate of our
choice would swing the vote to our favor again forcing a change in
the elected officer core. Generally only those currently servicing
and a few Squadron Commanders or VCs attend. The general
squadron member think they have vested interest in what is going
(Brad)
won several awards for the programs we support both as
individuals, and as a squadron. "Best Community Service Program
- honorable mention"; "Citation of Excellence to the Child Welfare
Foundation"; "Citation of Excellence for the GI Josh Program";
"Citation of Excellence for the National Emergency Fund"; "Best
veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Program"; "Best overall program
on the 2018 consolidated report". All these aforementioned were
"Honorable Mention" aka 3rd place. We did however receive 2nd
place for the "Highest Amount per Capita to the national
emergency Fund".
Understand that these awards would not be possible without the
help of all the 'active', reporting members of our squadron. With
179 members, we should get 1st place in all categories, but we
only have 7 members who reported what they did. YOU, as an
individual member can be giving money to children's charities of
any type and it would count. YOU, as an individual may be giving
blood or plasma at work or elsewhere but it still would count. But
you have to let me know by April 30th of 2019. You may have
noticed that we didn't win any membership awards. That is because
while our 100% goal was 214 members for 2018, we only reached
179. That's 35 short of 100%. Can we do better this year? I hope
so. Note that our dues have increased again, in anticipation of
Detachment and National increases. Though at $20.00 per year or
$35.00 for 2 years, they are right on par with all other squadrons in
the area, and much less than several squadrons in the Detachment.
