Religious Education Last month, our 9th grade Confirmation candidates brought a party for Valentine’s Day to the Ministry of Caring’s Guardian Angels daycare center. They danced with the little kids, did a craft, enjoyed some great snacks, and took the time for one on one conversations. St. Teresa of Calcutta often spoke of the effect that a tiny drop of water makes in an ocean, and that’s what happens when we take just a minute to share ourselves with others. We build up God’s kingdom one person at a time, until none are strangers. If you are planning what you will do, or give up, for Lent, keep this in mind. Talk in your family about ways we can share ourselves with others. Next week, March 10, during class time, we will have a Stations of the Cross drama, presented by the Biblical storytelling team “By Heart” (Mary-beth Howard and Shelley Gnade, former Tatnall teachers). All classes will attend and we encourage parents and siblings to attend as well. Stories of the people Jesus met along the way to his crucifixion make the Stations come alive for the children and for all of us. What a BEAUTIFUL way to begin Lent this year! Peace and every blessing, Eva Enjoy a day this week by fasting from any unessential use of cell phones, internet, screens - anything that takes you away from your family.

Join

Bishop Malooly Now in its 10th

year and

better than ever. Plan

today to join us on April

13th for the CYM Pilgrimage. We hope to gather one thousand youth, young adults, and families as we walk the city streets of Wilmington with Bishop Malooly, carrying the Pilgrimage Cross from parish to parish. Plans include opening prayer and entertainment at 10:30 am by speaker and musician, Ben Walther, stop by St. Francis Hospital for a special blessing of the patients, the chance to celebrate Reconciliation, to kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, experience the Stations of the Cross, and return to St. Elizabeth for 5:00 Mass. Online Registration: Visit cdow.org to register yourself, your family, or your entire group before April 5th. You must be pre-registered to attend.

Pastor’s Column THE INSIDE SHOWS

In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they are as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus’ images, is true: What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh.” By and by, the inside will show through.

The Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, for Latin-rite Catholics. Come Hear Father Michael Connolly, OSFS Explain

HOW A HANDFUL OF JESUS’ DISCIPLES CONVERTED AN UNWILLING ROMAN EMPIRE

The Gospels tell us that days after the crucifixion, eleven disciples and a few women and men came to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead. Before three centuries had passed, this handful of lower class, illiterate or semi-literate Jews from rural Galilee had become a church of some 30,000,000. How did this happen? There will be four Tuesdays sessions after the 12:05 p.m. Mass. Before each lecture they will be a light lunch in the Family Center.

Tuesday March 12th Tuesday March 19th Tuesday March 26th

Tuesday April 2nd

You may register by either going to http://www.stjosephonthebrandywine.org and clicking on the Events tab on the left of the page or calling Peter Fulweiler on 302-652-2264.

BLESSING TO BEGIN THE LENTEN SEASON As we look ahead to our Lenten journey, may our fasting be a hunger for justice, our alms an offering of peace, and our prayers a reflection of humble and grateful hearts. We ask the Holy Spirit to accompany us as we spend these 40 days reflecting on what it means to emerge from the desert ready to encounter the needs of the world with the hope of the Resurrection. How may this encounter with the Resurrection inspire us to reach out to those most in need? How may our prayers, fasting and almsgiving support those worldwide, especially those who are forced to flee their homes for safety or better opportunities? We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen BLESSING OF THE CRS RICE BOWLS God of all people, You are the source of every blessing. May we be mindful of your presence now and as we use these CRS Rice Bowls in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. May they be instruments of encounter, bringing us closer to you, our God, and to our neighbors both near and far. May these days in the desert inspire us to bring hope to the most vulnerable—those experiencing hunger, lack of economic opportunity, and violence that force them to migrate. Through these 40 days, may we deepen our faith in you and our love for one another, as we prepare for the great celebration of Easter. Amen

The Stations of the Cross Walk alongside Christ on the journey of his Passion and remember our

brothers and sisters both around the world and in our own cities who

experience suffering and poverty each day.

Holy God, be with us now as we meditate on your Son’s

journey to Calvary. Remind us that still, in this present day, many of your children continue that walk to Calvary, carrying heavy, difficult crosses. May we be Simon to those whose burdens are too heavy to be borne alone. May we be Veronica to those who need the touch of love and comfort. And may we, struggling with our own crosses, always remember your promises of justice, mercy and peace.

Amen
