RepoRt oF the executive diRectoRIn last year’s report, I signalled that we would be ready to bring the Campaign for Trinity to a successful conclusion in the first half of 2010. I would like to thank everyone for the extraordinary support and generosity which allowed the Campaign to raise more than $27 million since 2002. We celebrated this moment in March. All donors were invited to attend a thank you event at the College, where they were entertained by the College Choir and the cast of Twelve, the College play. The Chairman of the Board and the Warden added their thanks and pointed the way to the future; and acknowledged the role played by the members of the Foundation.

2010 continued to be a strong year for the Foundation despite the continuing after-effects of the global financial crisis and a number of other natural disasters which touched our community both directly and indirectly. During the year $2.64 million was raised in cash, with about $400,000 of that money coming through the annual giving program. These are very strong results and have enabled the College to continue its program of capital works, as well as providing almost $800,000 in scholarship support across all divisions of the College from recurrent and endowed funds.

Three other significant events occurred in the early part of the year. The beautifully redeveloped and expanded Theological School in the Old Warden’s Lodge was completed, and the complex was opened and dedicated by the Archbishop of Melbourne, the Most Reverend Philip Freier. The more than one hundred guests who attended the moving service of

Page 5: Foundation annual RepoRt

dedication were thrilled with the new School which not only has accommodated the expanding needs of the Theological School programs, but also proved to be a highly flexible area for other College-wide activities.

Shortly afterwards, Trinity marked its commitment to sustainability by launching our Sustainability Initiatives. A village fair atmosphere was created on the Bulpadock with more than a dozen stalls and exhibitors and with fun activities – all centred around changing our attitudes towards being sustainable. More than 300 students and visitors participated and seized the opportunity to start implementing programs throughout the year.

The third of the events in early 2010 was the inaugural Art Patrons Dinner at which guests heard Dr Patrick McCaughey deliver a wide-ranging and witty address on the development of Australian portraiture. The guests also celebrated the presentation of four portraits to the College: Manning Clark (TC 1934) by Arthur Boyd, Sir Rupert Hamer (TC 1935) by Lewis Miller, Chester Wilmot (TC 1931) by Mary Ann Mackenzie and Richard Woolcott AC (TC 1946) by Clifton Pugh. Towards the end of the year the College was most fortunate to receive a newly commissioned portrait of Sir Roderick Carnegie AC (TC 1951) by Peter Neilson.

Two projects, supported through the Annual Giving Program, made a noticeable visual difference to the College amenities during the year. The Bowling Green was reopened as the conclusion to the refurbishment of the Bulpadock; and new permanent seating was installed. On the East side of the College the final

work on the South Vatican Lawn (once known as the Masefield Walk) was completed, the watering system installed, and the new planting scheme set in place. Both of these projects have given beautiful and quiet areas for students and staff to use – especially during the drier months.

The reunion and special lunch programs continued throughout the year and were well attended. More than 110 alumni and their guests attended the Seniors Lunch (for those who entered College 51 or more years ago). Brian Loton AC (TC 1950) gave a stirring but reflective toast to the College. Reunions for the 20, 30, 40 and 50 year groups were all well attended, successful and enjoyable occasions. Additional gatherings were held in Sydney (a cocktail party), Canberra (lunch at Manning Clark House) and Hobart (dinner at the Hobart Club) during the year; and all attracted good numbers of alumni and friends, keen to continue their engagement with the College. Our Breakfast in the City program brought about 30 alumni together on each of two occasions to hear news from the College and listen to updates from the Warden. As Director of Advancement, I also travelled to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, London, New York and Los Angeles during the year to meet with alumni, donors and Trinity friends, and to attend various functions hosted by members of our community.

The Scholarship Program at Trinity, which is so very generously supported by members of the Foundation and the wider community, continues to offer much needed assistance to students who otherwise, for financial and personal reasons, could

never access the Trinity experience. The generosity of Dr Susan Lim (TC 1977) has created the Susan Lim Medical Scholarship which will be used to support a graduate student coming to College under the Melbourne Model. As can be seen in another section of the report, the Andrew Fraser (TC 1934) Medical Scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2010. The BA(Extended) program continued its development after its first year success. During the year, discussions with the Faculty of Business and Economics and with KPMG resulted in the creation of scholarships to support Indigenous students wishing to take a commerce degree, whereby Indigenous students undertaking the BA(Extended) may enter the BCom degree on a four year pathway.

The Warden’s Circle, under the leadership of Louise Gourlay OAM, continues to play a pivotal role in the fund-raising programs of Trinity. All those who donate $1000 or more to the Foundation and College during the year become members of the Warden’s Circle. In 2010, members were invited as guests of the Advancement Office to attend a performance of the College Play (Twelve) and also the College Musical (Kiss Me Kate). Some 70 members also attended the Warden’s Circle Garden Party in November – this year held indoors in the OWL complex because of inclement weather.

Louise Gourlay OAM, was also the most gracious host of a Choir Tour Fundraiser at her property near Point Lonsdale. In the first half of the year, more than $150,000 was raised to support this exceptionally successful tour to Hong Kong and Europe.

Many of the Trinity Community consider helping the College achieve its aims through leaving a bequest to Trinity in their wills. This long-term vision and commitment often allows those who may not have the funds to invest in Trinity and its students at a given time to make a lasting gift that can transform the lives of future students. During the year, members of the Leeper Society (those who have informed the College that they have made a bequest provision in their wills) enjoyed a guided tour around Bishopscourt and its beautiful gardens, and were treated to afternoon tea by Archbishop Philip Freier and Mrs Joy Freier. Bishop James Grant (TC 1950) related the history of Bishopscourt and also provided copies of his new monograph on the home.

The College was the fortunate beneficiary of a number of bequests during 2010, all of which have made a considerable difference to the people and programs at the College. Most significant was the bequest from Mrs Peggy Shaw who had also given the College a number of her significant art works during her life. Others who remembered the College in this way are recorded later in this report.

To all who supported the College in 2010, whether financially, through providing gifts in kind or services, through leaving a bequest … or simply by coming to the various Trinity functions and being part of Trinity – we say a deep and profound thank you. You do indeed make a difference to the College in all that you do, and continue to help us meet our goals and fulfil our mission.

I would like to express my personal thanks to the Advancement team who work so hard throughout the year, and whose cheerfulness provides a warm welcome to all who visit the College. At the end of 2009, we farewelled Dana Zarzycki (Associate Director, Advancement) who moved to Brazil with her husband. In her three years at Trinity, Dana had overseen many significant changes in the Advancement Office structure and operations and had made many strong friendships with our Foundation members. We also farewelled Veronica Fahmy (Administrative Assistant) who left to pursue other interests. We welcomed Nicole Crook (Advancement Associate, Communications and Events) and Astrida Cooper (Associate Director, Major Gifts). Kirstie Robertson moved roles to become the Office Administrator.

I would finally like to thank Dr Graeme Blackman OAM (Chairman) and all the members of the Executive Committee of the Foundation. Their wisdom and commitment provide invaluable support to the work of the Advancement Office and we truly value all that they volunteer.

Dr Alan Watkinson Director of Advancement

The Foundation and its elected Executive Committee are always encouraged by strong results. 2010 provided us with a number of challenges, but the Foundation rose to the task and supported the Advancement Office in achieving an impressive target of almost $2.7 million in cash towards the capital projects and scholarship commitments of the College. None of this is possible without the generosity of the members of the Foundation, and to everyone who gave so generously, I extend my thanks.

I was fortunate to attend a number of events run by the Advancement Team and to work closely with various members of the Foundation throughout the year. I am always impressed by the professionalism displayed by all who take part, and the extraordinary warmth with which Trinity is regarded both locally and from afar. In this, it is clear to see our international connections and outreach - one of the defining aspects of the modern Trinity.

While we constantly look outwards and forwards, we nevertheless are keen guardians and supporters of the heritage of the College. Our commitment to sustainability, the developing masterplan for the buildings and grounds, and of the core values of the College underpin our activities. This was the theme of our excellent guest speaker at the Annual General Meeting, Ian Penrose (TC 1967).

As we reflect upon our successes in 2010, we also look forward to even greater challenges over the next

the chaiRman ReFlects ...

three years. The College will renovate and expand the Dining Hall and this will require our concerted efforts to provide a truly special central space for all students and staff in the College.

With the support of the other members of the Executive Committee of the Foundation – all of whom made their own financial commitments during 2010 – we will happily accept this challenge. I am sure all members of the Foundation who supported our goals in 2010 will continue that support in 2011. In this way, we will continue to develop Trinity for the benefit of all current and future students and staff.

I thank all my fellow members of the Executive Committee of the Foundation, all Foundation members and friends, and the staff of the Advancement Office for their encouragement and support in 2010.

Funds peRFoRmance The Foundation raised some $2.64 million in donations in 2010 and received investment income of $0.9m. These donations, unless they were for a specific activity being undertaken by the College at the time of the donation, are invested across segments of the investment market based on weightings determined in conjunction with our investment advisors, JANA. The funds are invested in Australian and International equities, debt and liquid securities. The Foundation does not invest directly in securities but utilises recommended Fund Managers specializing in the various market segments.

The weightings of our investments into the various segments determine a benchmark portfolio return which measures the results from investments in sectors against the expected performance. The overall objective is to maintain the corpus of the Foundation Funds in real terms so that inflation does not diminish the purchasing power of the endowed funds over time. To achieve this and to provide for at least a 4% return from the Corpus to be utilized by the College each year, we also measure our performance against the benchmark of CPI plus 5% (previously CPI + 4%, however this was increased in 2010 as part of the Investment Management Committee review).

The investments performance of the Foundation’s funds following the global financial crisis was generally strong with positive returns of 25.7% in 2009 and 4.2% in 2010 against the benchmark Portfolio of 24.9% and 2.8% respectively.

This review also resulted in a reduction in the strategic asset allocation of investments in international equities and an increase in infrastructure debt. After careful consideration and with the approval of the Finance Committee and the Board, these two investments were sold in 2010, resulting in a loss of $256,690 from the sale of Acadian and a loss of $733,111 from the sale of Alliance Bernstein. The proceeds of the sales were re-invested in Tyndall (an Australian equity fund) and Hastings Yield Fund (an infrastructure debt fund). The Investment Management Committee also sold $1m of the Foundation’s investment in Principal Global at a profit of $230,942. The Committee decided to take some profits from this investment fund which had, and continues, to perform well.

As reported in the previous two years, the Directors had resolved to carry the shortfall between the market value and cost in an Available for Sale Investment Revaluation Reserve in the Balance Sheet rather than take a charge to the profit and loss at that time. The Directors took the position that the investments are a long term asset of the Foundation and therefore any movement should be reflected in the Balance Sheet rather than the profit and loss. Any impact on the profit and loss would only be taken to account when an investment was sold. As a consequence, when the units were sold in 2010, the market shortfall had to be taken to the profit and loss. This is consistent with the Foundation’s (and College’s) policy and consistent with Australian Accounting Standard AASB 139 Financial Instruments: Recognition and Measurement.

The 2010 performance figures below were prepared by the Foundation (and the College’s) investment advisors, JANA Investment Advisers Pty Ltd, and show an improvement in 2010 in the Foundation’s investments of 4.2%. This compares favourably to the performance of the Benchmark Portfolio of 2.8%, however fall short of the Performance Objective of 6.7% (CPI plus 4%). Performance over the last 5 year investment cycle and since inception is also detailed below.

The Investment Management Committee undertook an extensive review of the investment portfolio in early 2010 and re-aligned the strategic asset allocation of the Foundation’s (and College’s) investments. This review identified that two of the investment funds; Acadian (Australian equities) and Alliance Bernstein (International equities) were performing poorly relative to the market, our objectives, and their respective benchmarks and relative to other investments in the portfolio.

Page 10: Foundation annual RepoRt

10

It is important to stress that despite the impact of the sale of Acadian and Alliance Bernstein on the 2010 results, the Foundation was able to provide the needed funding for the College’s requirements both from an operational and capital program perspective.

Disbursements to Trinity College totaled $2.8m and included such items as Scholarships $738k, the Theological School Redevelopment project $525k, funding the Campaign costs $467k, the Gourlay Visiting Professor in Ethics in Business program $96k, general buildings and grounds works $219k, the BA(Extended) program $113k, Theological School studentships and lectureships $51k, the 2010 Choir Tour $115k, and funds transferred to the College from the Caldwell distribution $216k and the Theological School Fund $58k.

The Investment Management Committee, Finance Committee and the Board continue to monitor the funds’ performance and to work closely with JANA on charting a course that endeavours to maintain the real value of endowments and still meets the needs of Trinity College.

Reinstating the bowling gReenAfter the successful installation of the water tanks and the restoration of the Bulpadock, in 2010 Trinity looked north to the College Oak, and restored the smaller area which, at one time, was the ‘bowling green.’ The old grass was removed, new grass (Santa Ana Couch) was installed with a new watering system, fed by the tanks. Two new seating areas were created with attractive tables and chairs to add another new and comfortable outdoor area for students and staff.

We also welcomed another eleven students to the program. In conjunction with the Faculty of Business and Economics, Trinity gained the philanthropic support of KPMG to create new scholarships in support of students in the BA(Extended) who wish to follow a career in commerce or business. The first of these scholarships will be offered in 2011.

All those who inform the College that they have made a provision for the College in their wills become members of the Leeper Society, created to commemorate not only our first Warden, but also his own legacy –and those of his children Valentine and Geoffrey – to the future of Trinity.

In 2010, Trinity received a most generous bequest from the late Peggy Shaw (inset below), wife of Professor AGL Shaw (TC 1935). A noted artist, she had already given the College some of her significant paintings. In her will she left more than $800,000 to be used for the greatest needs of the College. Such a vision and such generosity is truly transformational for the College.
