FOSTERING CLIMATE RESILIENT UPLAND FARMING SYSTEMS

IN THE NORTH-EAST (FOCUS)

REPORT ON ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY FOCUS-IFAD DURING

COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

AGRONOMY:

A. Locally procured seeds through Farmers Interest Groups (FIGs) like Ginger, Colocosia,

Potato, Beans, Chilly etc were sown in Current Jhum.

B. Meeting to discuss on the Agriculture contingency plan and convergence plan on CSS

was held between Agriculture Dept and FOCUS-IFAD on 2nd April 2020 with Addl.

Chief Secretary & APC.

C. Sowing of Kharif crops was done from March till May in the Hills and till July in the

foothills by maintaining social distancing and other preventive measures. Certified and

improved seeds from authorized dealer of National seed corporation like Arhar, Black

Gram, Groundnut, Soyabean and Sesbania about 66.8 MT has been transported to all

FOCUS Villages with special permit from District Administration, expected to cover

4440 hectares covering 31692 households. POPs were also compiled and developed for

dissemination to the farmers through the DMUs on the following crops.

HORTICULTURE:

The project has distributed quality planting materials of orchard and plantation crops to

the farmers during June –July 2020 through the Department of Horticulture, Nagaland.

The planting materials include Khasi Mandarin, Parkai, Arecanut and Plum.

E. Developed Short videos on planting techniques in collaboration with the Department

of Horticulture, Govt. of Nagaland on certain crops (Khasi mandarin, parkai, arecanut)

and digital brochure on plum disseminated to Lead Farmers and FIGs of the project

villages as physical training was not possible due to the Covid – 19 lockdown.

Pukhoti Wild Apple, at Tsutoho Village. In

2018 the potential of pukhoti was discussed

at various trainings and meetings of farmers

of Zunhoboto district. The idea was well

conceived by the farmers of Tsutoho and

have put into practice. The lead role taken in

none other than our FOCUS Settled FIG

chairman. It is the same village who has

done the land lease agreement and cultivated

Mandarin Orange under FOCUS.

SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION:

Protection of water source and construction of water harvesting structure works had started.

Newly constructed Water harvesting tank at Shotomi Village under Upland settled.

Construction of water storage and delivery system at Tsukomi village Agunato block under

FOCUS- IFAD.

LIVESTOCK:

1. 23 officers and staffs of Agri and allied department of Kiphire has been trained as ToT on Animal

Husbandry from 17th March’2020 to 21st March’2020.

2. Renovation of Three (3) Boar Stations at State Pig Breeding Centre’s of Akuluto, Tizit and Phek.

3. Bio-fencing with trench for Mithun enclosure at Khukishe Village.

4. Stock Grid at Khukishe and Tsutoho Village.

5. On going Pig Housing at Tanga Village, Longleng.

6. 148 Pig Breeders selected for support of Pig Breeding Unit.

7. 625 Community Animal Health Workers appointed from 625 FOCUS Villages.
