What are Fossil Fuels ?

coal, oil and natural gas -- currently provide more than 85% of all the energy consumed in the United States, nearly two-thirds of our electricity, and virtually all of our transportation fuels. Moreover, it is likely that the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels to power an expanding economy will actually increase over at least the next two decades even with aggressive development and deployment of new renewable and nuclear technologies.

Page 3: Fossil fuel

What are the different types of fossil fuel?

The three main different types of fossil fuel are: Coal ,Oil , and natural gas .

How is Coal Formed ?

Coal is formed when massive amounts of vegetation died and fell into the swamp-like surfaces that existed in the heavily vegetated Earth of the Carboniferous Period. Huge mats of waterlogged plant material were formed that resisted decay. Over millions of years, as the climatic and geologic conditions changed, these plant sediments were covered and compacted by other sediments, resulting in their lithification.

Describe the different stages of coal formation? There is 3 main stages of coal formation--Anthracite coal which is the hardest and has more carbon which gives it a higer energy content. -Lignite which is the softest and is low in carbon but high in hydrogen and oxygen content.-Now Bitiminous is in between.-Peat is todays precursor to coal and is still found in many caountried and is used as an enerfy source.

How is coal used as a fossil fuel ?

Coal is used as a solid fuel to produce heat through combustion.

Page 7: Fossil fuel

How is oil formed?

Oil was formed from the remanings of animals and plant that lived million of years ago in water before dinosaurs.

Page 8: Fossil fuel

How is oil used as a fossil fuel ?

Oil is used to create motor gasoline and diesel fuel. Its also used to create markers, ink, crayons, gum, dishwashing Soap , deodorant, eyeglasses, and fueling cars.

Page 9: Fossil fuel

How is natural gas formed?

Natural Gas is formed from a type of small water organisms which include algae.

Page 10: Fossil fuel

How is natural gas used as a fossil fuel?Natural gas is used to create steel, glass, paper, clothing, brick, electricity, and many more raw materials for common products.

What are refineries and why are they important to the production of fossil fuels?

Refineries are An industrial plant for purifying a crude substance, such as petroleum or sugar. They are important to the production of fossil fuels since they undergo steps to help purify the substances.

Describe the Exxo Valdez oil spill the incident ..

Exxon Valdez is the original name of an oil tanker owned by the former Exxon shipping Company, a division of the former Exxon corporation. The ship gained notoriety after the Marcg 24,1989 oil spill in which the tanker captained by Joseph Hazelwood and bound for Long Beach, California, hit Prince William Sounds Bligh Reef and spilled an estimated minimim 40,900 m³ which is 10.8 million Us gallons of Crude oil in Alaska. This has been recorded as one of the largest spills in United states history and one of the largest ecological disasters.

Describe the Deep Water Horizon oil castrophe discussing the incident..

On April 20 drilling rig explosion claimed the lives of 11 workers. The rig's subsequent collapse and unleashed a major oil spill that threatens the U.S of Golf of Mexico ecosystems and economy. This spill of oil also threatened the heart of the U.S heart of energy production. It damaged both on and offshoreas a giant, unprecedented underwater leak spreads oil across the northern Gulf of Mexico between the mouth of the Mississippi River and Florida.U.S. President Barack Obama's plans to widen offshore drilling have been put on hold, and energy giant BP Plc faces another blow to its reputation and a multi-billion bill for cleaning up the mess and paying damages.
