Welcome to Forward Theater! We are thrilled to present the final show of our 2010-2011 season:
Moonlight and Magnolias A screwball comedy about 1930s Hollywood and the making of Gone With The Wind. Just as our previous productions this season have engaged audiences on many levels, both emotional and intellectual, we hope that Moonlight illuminates some complex issues of an era gone-by, while prompting gales of uproarious laughter!
Help us continue on our journey onward and upward…and Forward—by becoming a new subscriber for the 2011-2012 season, or renewing your subscription! In our third season in Overture Center, FTC is presenting portraits of unforgettable characters in extraordinary situations—from inventors on the brink of discovery, to farmers on the plains of 1930s Kansas, to a man and a woman on an intense emotional journey.

We’re excited to be on the stage in the Playhouse as we continue to build a regional Equity theater to entertain, challenge, and delight audiences in southern Wisconsin. We’re committed to striving for excellence in our work and relationships, exercising integrity in both art and management. We’re also committed to making bold creative decisions and to fostering an inclusive theater community. From our artists to our audiences, we want FTC not only to be our theater, but your theater. Thank you for being part of our endeavor.
As you may know, Forward Theater’s advisory company is made up of actors, directors, playwrights, and designers who live and work in southern Wisconsin. We have an enviable job; we meet once a month with the artistic director and staff to talk about – what else? – theater. As a group we have the pleasure of reading and discussing plays – many, many plays – and considering how these scripts could fit into a future FTC season. It’s a fascinating process.
We come from different disciplines, we possess a wide variety of experience in the performing arts, and we all have strong opinions about what’s important to put on stage. About what audiences in Madison want to see, what they need to see. About the kinds of plays that excite us as artists. About drama, comedy, musicals, Broadway hits, and original work. We don’t always agree, and truthfully, that’s half the fun.
I am happy to say that the advisory company is extremely excited about the plays Forward is producing this year – and next year! Over the course of this season you’ll see some of us on stage, some of us leading talk-backs after the shows, some of us in the lobby chatting about the productions, and some of us will be seated next to you – applauding. Feel free to introduce yourself and more importantly, tell us what you think of the play. We’ll remember what you had to say when we start planning for the future. . .

FROM THE DR A M ATURG
The year 1939 marked the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Hollywood. With such films as The Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights, Destry Rides Again, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Gunga Din, and Stagecoach all gracing the marquees of theaters across the nation that year, cinema had come into its own. By year’s end no event was more anticipated than the premiere of Gone With the Wind, a film based on Margaret Mitchell’s epic novel, first published in 1936. The book, which took a sympathetic view of the old South, sold millions of copies and became an instant bestseller, in part because of Depression-era Americans’ nostalgia for simpler days gone by. Audiences everywhere eagerly waited to see how Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh would breathe life into this beloved novel. Overlooking the insidious brutality of slavery and the strange fruits brought about by contemporary policies of Jim Crow segregation, crowds gathered in Atlanta in mid-December 1939 to celebrate the opening of this much-ballyhooed film.
At the premiere, the city of Atlanta was treated not just to a movie, but an event, complete with a scale-model recreation of Tara, the plantation home of the O’Hara family, and a young people’s Patriots Ball, broadcast live on NBC radio. Pat Conroy recalled his mother’s fondness for the film, noting that it “was a house of worship [she] retired to so she could experience again the spiritual refreshment of art.” In an era of great uncertainty, Gone With the Wind uplifted and unified many Americans by reconstructing a fictional, melodramatic narrative, designed to erase the painful memories of slavery and celebrate the romance of the Civil War.
Moonlight and Magnolias loosely resembles events that took place after producer David O. Selznick suspended filming of Gone With the Wind in early 1939 in order to fix the problems with Sidney Howard’s original screenplay. Although details of the real-life script-as-sausage-making ordeal are fuzzy, we do know that Selznick called in his friend Ben Hecht to repair a script that, during the course of production, underwent more than 40 revisions by at least a dozen different writers. The promise of a healthy paycheck and his longtime friendship with Selznick were probably the only reasons that Hecht joined the project; by 1939, he had grown weary of Hollywood but needed lucrative projects like Gone With the Wind to settle his unpaid taxes. Victor Fleming, a director whose industry contract gave producers wide latitude to assign him any project they wanted, found himself conscripted into directing Gone With the Wind just weeks before completing work on another masterpiece, The Wizard of Oz. Although there was no real-life Miss Popenghul, her character represents a composite of numerous female assistants and secretaries under Selnick’s employ.
Aside from these basic historical details, however, Ron Hutchinson’s play is largely a work of the artist’s imagination, a “What might have happened when…?” meditation on a real-life event. From this point of departure, Hutchinson provides a comedy with relentless energy and its fair share of discarded peanut shells and banana peels. But the play also ponders the more problematic elements of Gone With the Wind—notably Scarlett O’Hara’s slap of Prissy, an enslaved African-American woman—challenging us as audience members to think about the brutal legacies glorified by the film. At the same time, in the tradition of The Simpsons’ endless references to the film and Carol Burnett’s infamous “Went With the Wind” spoof, Moonlight and Magnolias also recognizes that the best comedy often emerges from moments of extreme tragedy. In this spirit, Ron Hutchinson invites us to explore the humor underneath the making of a film about such a troubling time in American history, and in doing so, laugh together and begin to heal the wounds of our nation’s past.

Somewhere in our office is a version of Photoshop 1.0 (we’ve upgraded a few times since then.)
We built our first website fifteen years ago (and it included audio and video files.)
We created an animated 3D website ten years ago (mailing out anaglyphic 3D glasses.)
Some people follow trends. We prefer to help shape them.
