Instructions

• Divide the group into pairs and give each set of partners one template. Each pair will need to cut the heading off the template to make a square of paper, then fold their paper fortune teller by following the photo guide below. Start out by asking for help from students who have made a fortune teller before – they can assist others.

• To play, begin with the thumb and index fingers of each hand in the four pockets of the fortune teller. Have the person whose fortune is being read pick one of the colors on the top four flaps. If the color is Blue, spell out the letters of blue while alternating a pinching and pulling motion with the teller. Each pinch will expose four of the numbers on the inner flaps, and each pull will expose the other four numbers. After spelling out B-L-U-E, the teller will be showing one of the sets of four numbers. The other player will then pick one of those numbers, and the responding action is the alternating pinch and

pull from the first round, except it continues with a counting of the number instead of the spelling of the color. Once the number has been counted, four numbers will be exposed. After one is picked, the discussion question under that number is read.

• Partners should take turns playing and answering the goal-setting questions. To keep this moving along, you may want to set a time limit for each round.

Discussion

• What did you learn from the activity? • Did your partner’s responses surprise you? Did you learn anything new about

each other? • Did you offer feedback to each other about how each of you can achieve

your goals? • Were there any questions that you were unable to answer? • Is there a difference between a goal and a hope/dream/wish? What is it?

Reflecting & Connecting

• A traditional fortune telling game is supposed to reveal what will happen to you in the future. Goals are a future we make for ourselves! True success and the achievement of a goal is dependent on putting forth necessary time and energy, not depending on luck and hoping for a good outcome.

• Supportive individuals (such as mentors) are ideal people to discuss your goals and the steps you plan to take to achieve them. They can offer valuable insight and ask questions that help you identify and work towards your goals.
