Parents & Students, February marks some of the most important events of the year at South High School – ones in which we wrap up the selection of courses for the 2019-2020 school year and help complete plans regarding life after high school for seniors. Underclassmen, working with school counselors, will finalize the enrollment process and make incredibly important decisions in determining the classes they’ll take next year. With respect to 12th grade students, that means a final look at plans for life after high school. For seniors, decisions are being made regarding pursuing post-secondary education at a college or university, embarking upon a military career, or entering the workforce. With any of these decisions, our school counselors are invaluable sources of advice and information. If you haven’t done so already, please contact your counselor and arrange a time to visit about post-secondary plans. You’ll find this conversation to be time well spent. For our underclassmen, research conclusively points to the benefits of taking challenging coursework, regardless of the educational or career path chosen. Students who decide to pursue a rigorous course of study during high school are far better prepared to do well after high school than students who choose to do otherwise. Selecting rigorous coursework pays tremendous dividends down the road, and it’s especially beneficial for college-bound students when it comes to college/university admissions and scores on standardized tests (ACT and SAT). A year of your life is well worth proper and careful planning. The right courses will go a long way toward making the next school year your best one ever. The tradition of excellence at FZS is evident through the planning we do with students and parents to ensure success. I’m anticipating an exciting spring semester as we continue to move forward with great things for our students and look forward to seeing you at our activities and events in the upcoming weeks. CLASS OF 2022

February is here! I can’t believe the amazing things that the all the fresh-men students are doing. The amount of talent that this class has is astonishing. I love coming to games, theater productions and performances. Not to mention the high level of academic achievements that I am seeing. I am so proud of all of you. Keep it up. This month, the FZS Theater presents Cinderella on February 7 - 9.

This is a show that you do not want to miss! I have snuck in to a few rehearsals for a sneak peek. The Winter Formal on February 16th. Make sure you purchase your tickets for what looks to be a fun filled night. There will be a great spirit week leading up to the pep assembly on Friday, February 15th, then the dance. With mid-quarter approaching, please make sure you are keeping up with your classes. If you need extra help, make sure that you stop by room 117 for A+ tutoring each day after school. If you need a specific tutor in a class, stop by my office and I can find someone to assist you. Stay diligent in your classes and set yourself up for a strong second semester.

Dr.Ticia Garbarini Assistant Principal

CLASS OF 2020

Greetings Class of 2020! I cannot believe that it is already February! That means that we are almost to midterm of third quarter, which is February 6. So, make sure that you are on staying on top of your homework and studying for those tests! On April 2, the Fort Zumwalt School District will be giving the all of the juniors a free ACT test. However, this is a day that we are not in school,

so transportation will not be provided to the test. Students who are interested in taking the test will need to provide their own transpor-tation and will need to be at South High by 7:30 a.m. The test will not include the writing portion, so it will conclude by about noon. In order to take the test, it is necessary for interested students to fill out the Google form by copying and pasting the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdVbR7kuN9SZw4Y6ofoAyaYh9w6GOrKGJ_H1FbeBr0OJoeYvg/viewform Only students who WANT to take the test need to complete the form. If a student is not wishing to take the test, then it is not necessary to complete the form. All interested students must complete the form by Friday, February 15, 2019. Please contact my office at 636-978-1212, with any questions.

Mrs. Stephanie Goellner Assistant Principal

CLASS OF 2019 Does it feel as if time is moving faster or is it just me? It seems like only yesterday we were all returning from winter break and here we are in February. Our Grad Night Committee continues to meet monthly and has been actively working behind the scenes to ensure this year’s Grad Night is one to remember. As graduation draws closer, the Grad Night Committee will be hosting a golf tournament fundraiser in April. If you would be interested in participating in this event, please feel

free to reach out to me for more details. Speaking of details, our Winter Formal dance is February 16th. Tickets will go on sale the week of the dance. I hope to see many of the senior class at this final Winter Formal. As always, if I can help in anyway please do not hesitate to swing by my office. The same holds true for any senior parent should you have questions throughout the year regarding graduation, credits, or any other items related to your child’s education, please feel free to call me.

Mr. Joe Serles Assistant Principal

CLASS OF 2021 It’s February and we have had three snow days. I know you all enjoy them, but I am hoping we don’t have any more, so that we can get out and enjoy our summer! Before we can focus on summer, however, we need to finish second semester strong. We started second semester with an assembly where I reminded you all about some common discipline issues. Second semester is a fresh start for some discipline offences. Tardies start over, but second semester is longer than first semester, so they can catch up with you. Get to class on time! One thing that does not start over is the cell phone

offence. Please put your cell phones away. On your third offense you go to in-school suspension for five days! That is a long time, and it can really hurt to be out of class for that long. Overall, the Class of 2021 has done a great job, so let’s keep it up! Remember what I told you, second semester is a fresh start. If you want to do better than first semester, you have to start strong and keep it up! If you failed a core class first semester, you want to do your best and pass second semester so you only have to make up one semester in summer school. You don’t want to have to repeat classes next year. Each year, you have the opportunity to pick more electives. During the assembly in January, you also met with guidance counselors and learned about course selections. Electives are classes you want to take, but that is only possible if you are passing all of the required classes! You should have turned in your enrollment sheet, and counselors will be meeting with you this month to review your course selections. Be sure to choose classes you are interested in and want to take! The school master schedule is based on your choices and I cannot always allow you to change classes next year. February brings with it the Winter Formal. I hope you all participate and have a great spirit week topped off with the dance on Saturday, February 16th.

Winter Driving Tips

√ Always wear your seat belt. √ Be sure your windshield is clear and your visibility

is not impaired from ice or fog. √ Use caution when accelerating into traffic during

wet conditions. √ Use caution when pulling off the road, turning, or stopping

during wet conditions. √ Remember that highway on and off ramps freeze before the

highway, so slow down when entering or exiting the interstate. √ Do not tailgate. Allow for longer stopping time on wet

pavement. √ Use caution on bridges as well as overpasses as they freeze

before roads. √ Stay off the roads during snow days so the plows can do their

job. √ Keep emergency items such as water, food, flashlight, and

blanket or warm clothing in your trunk.
