As in 1946, o u r E e te was t o have been com bined w ith o u r Annual A th l e t i c s C a rn iv a l a t R u s h c u t te r s Bay, th e p ro c e e d s o f th e f u n c t io n to be d e v o te d to war fu n d s . The w e a th e r was so w ild and w e t, how ever, t h a t th e A t h l e t i c s w ere c a n c e l le d and th e P e te h e ld a t s c h o o l . T h is c a u se d many l a s t - m in u te a l t e r a t i o n s , b u t as we had been w ork ing f o r o u r s t a l l s f o r w eeks, we w ere a b le to c a r r y on . One o f th e moat i n t e r e s t i n g a s p e c ts o f th e P e te was th e number and in g e n io u s n e s s o f th e p la n s to r a i s e money f o r th e v a r io u s s t a l l s - c o n c e r t s , c o m p e ti t io n s , c ro s s -w o rd p u z z le s in L a t in , P re n ch and L i t e r a t u r e , s a l e s o f a r t s and c r a t f s , honey and g a rd en p ro d u ce and so on.

P a r e n t s were v e ry g en ero u s in t h e i r s u p p o r t , s t a f f and p u p i l s worked m a n fu l ly , and th e r e s u l t was t h a t £ 1 6 2 :5 :1 0 was s e n t in to th e G i r l s ’ S eco n d ary S c h o o ls War Pund.

THE DEBATING SOCIETY.

The programme opened w ith an unaccom pan ied g ro u p , in t r o d u c in g c o n tra ^ p u n ta l s t y l e , and ended w ith works o f th e w r i t e r s o f to - d a y , Vaughan W illia m s , E r ic C o a tes and F rank B r id g e s . S e le c te d gems from o p e ra s , su ch as S p in n in g C horus (W agner), A n v il C horus (V w d i) , a s e l e c t i o n from W illiam T e l l (R o s s in iJ were sung w ith s p i r i t and in o p e ra s t y l e . F i f t h Y ear g i r l s v i s i t e d J .C .W illia m so n * s p ro d u c tio n o f J u l i u s C a e s a r , and T h ird Y ears saw The Midsummer N ig h t 's Dream; a p a r t y o f tw e lv e s e n io r g i r l s a t te n d e d a F ilm E v en ing a t H is to r y House on Ju n e 6 th ; a n o th e r p a r t y went on a h i s t o r i c a l and g e o g ra p h ic a l exped­i t i o n to th e Nepean and W arragamba on 3 rd May. A group o f g i r l s , i n v i t e d t o th e A.W .A., was e n te r t a i n e d by S i r E rn e s t F is k ; o th e r p a r t i e s have a t te n d e d th e A .B.C. O r c h e s t r a l c o n c e r t s and th e K irso v a B a l l e t .

The sc h o o l was honoured in t h a t i t s c a p t a in , Gwen O h lsso n , was i n v i t e d by th e M in is te r f o r E d u c a tio n , Mr C liv e R .E v a t t , K .C ., t o an i n s p e c t io n o f P a r l ia m e n t H ouse, and l a t e r to an o f f i c i a l f u n c t io n in M a rtin P la c e in c o n n e c tio n w ith th e o p en in g o f th e £ 1 0 5 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 Loan.

M iss Cohen p r e s id e d ; she made a sp e e c h , f u l l o f good a d v ic e , and re a d m essages e x p re s s in g th e good w ish es o f p a s t t e a c h e r s and f r i e n d s o f th e s c h o o l; she was d e l ig h te d to r e c e iv e , a t th e hands o f D o ro thy Edge, C a p ta in f o r 1940, an e x q u i s i t e m arb le s t a t u e t t e o f Jo an o f Arc - th e g i f t o f th e F i f t h Y ears o f 1940 and 194ID.

The i n v e s t i t u r e o f th e C a p ta in and P r e f e c t s f o r 1942 was fo llo w e d by a p p ro p r ia te sp e e c h e s by Gwen O h lsson and Ju n e T e r r i l l , th e r e t i r i n g C a p ta in and S e n io r P r e f e c t ; th e n came sp e ec h es by th e C a p ta in - E le c t , th e new s e n io r p r e f e c t and th e "Y ear" p r e f e c t s f o r 1942. The f u n c t io n in th e h a l l ended w ith God Save th e K ing; th e T h ird s and F i f t h s w ere " c la p p e d o u t" , and th e t r a d i t i o n a l Guard o f Honour fo rm ed .

The p a r t y was h e ld in th e S c ien c e Room, and e ac h d e p a r t in g g i r l was g iv e n a c a le n d a r , p a in te d by th e A rt C la s s e s . A f te r t o a s t s to th e K ing , th e S c h o o l, th e S t a f f and th e F o u r th Y e a rs , th e c a k e , - p r e s e n te d by Mrs Cdx, N a r e l l e 's m o th e r, was c u t ; th e n g i r l s went to th e H a ll f o r d a n c in g and games and a happy day ended w ith Auld Lang Syne and th e N a tio n a l Anthem.

The D in n e r was h e ld a t tbe Women's C lub on 1 6 th O c to b e r. M iss B e s s ie B aunan, who had j u s t r e tu r n e d from A m erica, and M iss V e ro n ic a P ik e , o u r D is t in g u is h e d F o r t i a n f o r th e y e a r , b o th fa v o u re d u s w ith v e ry i n t e r e s t i n g sp e e c h e s . The p r e s e n t - d a y g i r l s o f th e sc h o o l were once a g a in v e ry g en ero u s w ith t h e i r g i f t o f r e d ro s e s f o r t h i s f u n c t io n .

O th e r fu n c jrio n s h e ld d u r in g th e jy ea r w ere two T h e a tre P a r t i e s , A Jack - P o t N ig h t, th e p ro c e e d s o f w hich w ere handed to th e S choo l P a t r i o t i c Fund, and a S k a t in g P a r ty . T hese f u n c t io n s p ro v ed v e ry e n jo y a b le .

In November an E ven ing was h e ld in honour o f Mrs C a in e s ( fo rm e r ly Gwen C urran ) a t w hich we gave h e r a p r e s e n t a t i o n in a p p r e c ia t io n o f h e r u n t i r i n g e f f o r t s on b e h a l f o f th e U nion .

As th e BBd o f th e y e a r i s n o t a s u i t a b l e tim e f o r su ch a p a r t y , i t was d e c id e d to com bine th e "W elcom e-In P a r ty " w ith th e Annual G en era l M eeting and make i t a s o c i a l n ig h t .
