About Dr. Andy Berning• Former Chemistry Teacher• Ph.D. in Educational Technology from UT Austin• Former CITO for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD• Founder of The Renaissance Institute • Strategic Advisor for the Learning Innovation and Networked
Knowledge (LINK) Lab at UT Arlington• Author of What Now? Emerging Technologies and Their Practical
Application in K12 Teaching and Learning Free MOOC on EdX (www.edx.org)
The Renaissance Institute• Fee-Only Technology Advisors• Do Not Sell Hardware or Software• Practitioners in K12 and University Settings
The Renaissance Model: A Framework for K12 Technology• Technology Infrastructure• Classroom Technology• Data Systems• Integration into Teaching and Learning• Evaluation and Accountability
Our Perspective• Supporters of Public Education• Understand the value of teachers• Based on research and best practice (not Hype)• Based on National Standards• Based on long-term success cases in actual K-12 settings• Based on the “Verbs” rather than hardware or software
The Research on Technology in K12 SchoolsWe know now – based on decades of use in schools, on findings of hundreds of research studies, and on the everyday experiences of educators, students, and their families – that, properly used, technology can enhance the achievement of all students, increase families’ involvement in their children’s schooling, improve teachers’ skills and knowledge, and improve school administration and management. The overall conclusion of this synthesis of the reviews of the literature is that computer technologies generally have a positive effect on academic achievement. Within this finding there is great variance. http://www.citejournal.org/articles/v4i3general1.pdf
Observational Research What is Really Happening in K12 Schools.
The Chasm we hit when adopting technology into the mainstream.
Technology Integration in Traditional K12 Setting is a Square Peg in a Round Hole
The Technology Hype Cycle The Gartner Group www.gartner.com
Waiting for Ironman• A Case Study on Expectations
The Current Status to Ironman Gap is Large
Strategies (Stepping Stones) to Fill The Gap
What is The Role of Technology in K12 Teaching and Learning?• Assume the Networks Are In Place• Assume the Students Have a Mobile Device
The Berning Question: What Now?
Why Hire Technology?• Assume you are interviewing technology for a job at your campus.• What is the job description?• What questions will you ask?
How K12 Schools Currently Leverage Technology• To Promote
• Engagement– (Changing Locus of Control)• Enrichment• Creativity• Cultural awareness• Self-confidence
• As a Tool for • Efficiency and effectiveness (improve and automate core functions)• Knowledge creation• Drill and practice• An alternative means to assess knowledge• Data management• Collecting data for learning analytics (Learning made visible)• Constructivist and Project-Based Learning
How K12 Schools Use Technology (continued)• To Develop
• 21st century skills• Better behavior• Excitement• Inspiration• Better communication• A level playing field for all students• Personalized Learning Systems
• To Access• Resources• Information• Expertise
Rule # 1: Do No Harm• Research on when Not to use digital technology• Screen Weariness• Mindfulness Research
The Renaissance Framework for Technology Use in K12 1. Connect The Learner2. Engage The Learner3. Promote Literacy4. Level The Playing Field (focus on the nonconsumers)
The Connected Learning Instructional Framework Connect the Learner, Teacher, and Parent
• District-Approved Content, Resources, and Applications• Personal Learning Network (teachers, campus, community)• Cultural Opportunities• Creative Opportunities• Publishing Opportunities • Opportunities for Acceleration• Strategies that Drive Engagement• Strategies that Connects Informal Learning
Promote Literacy• Traditional Literacy (all subjects)• Post-High School Literacy• Multimodal Literacy• Media Literacy• Cultural Literacy• Digital Literacy, Digital Citizenship, Netiquette
Level the Playing Field• Universal Access to Hardware and Internet Connectivity• Adaptive Assistive Technology for Exceptional Learners• Needs of the Nonconsumers• Integration Strategies to Promote Use• BYOD• Lending Libraries• Blended Learning
Good teachers already do this without technology• Digital technology brings a new dimension• Digital technology brings big levers, a strong catalyst
What is the Role of Technology in FBISD?• What’s holding you back?• What do you need?
