Formula Student Racing Team
What is Formula Student?
Formula Student (FS) is Europe's most established
educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution
of Mechanical Engineers.
FS is an international competition whereby teams of
university students have the opportunity to design, build
and market a small single-seat racing car. They are then
charged with competing against other universities in a
series of events designed to test the performance of the
car and the team.
Formula Student not only gives students experience in
design and manufacturing but also a chance to gain
experience in the business elements of engineering. There
are a number of competitions around the world where
Formula Student takes place including the UK, Italy, USA,
Australia, and Germany.
Our team, Team SURTES (Surrey University Racing
Technology and Engineering Solutions), has in the past
focused its efforts on the UK event however the team is
looking to compete in other international events such as
Germany in the future.

Speaking about Formula Student, Ross Brawn, Team
Principal of the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team, said:
“I never fail to be impressed each year by the amount of talent shown by the Formula Student competitors. When it comes to
giving the younger generation of engineers a chance to demonstrate their skills, there really is no substitute for Formula
Student.”
Chris Kirby, Head of Education at the Institution of
Mechanical Engineers, said:
“Formula Student is one of the best recruiting grounds for world
-class engineers in Europe, testing the students’ skills, passion and drive to their limits.
“Engineers will be essential to solving many of the global issues we are likely to face over the coming decades, using many of
the skills that Formula Student develops. So to see British
engineering students show such commitment and enthusiasm for Formula Student is very encouraging.”
James Allison, Technical Director at Lotus Renault GP, said:
“We are fortunate at Lotus Renault GP to have many talented graduate applicants for vacancies in our team.
“We have found from repeated positive experience that young engineers blooded in the engineering and competitive ethic of
Formula Student stand out from the crowd.
Industry Opinions
About the Team
Team SURTES is the University of Surrey’s in-house racing team; run by mostly engineering and business students, academic and technical staff provide guidance when required. Every year Team SURTES seeks out to design and manufacture ever lighter, more powerful racing cars to compete in the Formula Student Competition.
The Formula Student program at the University of Surrey is an ideal platform for students interested in cutting edge technology as it encourages them to design, manufacture and test a single-seat racing car.
The student team is not only responsible for producing
a brand new car every year, but also the management of all the finance, marketing and HR operations of the Formula Student team. Hence, FS gives the students the ideal opportunity to learn new skills and showcase their talent.
To produce the car, the team has access to a number of facilities provided by the university including its own dedicated design lab, machine workshop and assembly area.
The overall aim is to ensure we have a race car ready for the UK event held at Silverstone in July of each year.
A message from the Team Leader
The first thing that attracted me to study engineering was finding out about Formula Student when I came to an open
day at the University of Surrey. After hearing about it from
students who had actually taken part in designing, building
and racing a car as part of their degree, I knew I had to
get involved. I was hooked and immediately got involved
when I started my fresher’s year and 5 years on I’m still
involved.
Although I merely started off as a volunteer learning the
basics and getting to know how things worked on the car, I have steadily ramped up my involvement within Team
SURTES over the last few years. After I finished my
placement year at Airbus UK in Bristol, I was itching to get back to university so that I could get cracking with helping
out on the design of our 2011 challenger.
This year marks a crucial year for our team as we aim to make a big push towards the front of the field. As Team
Leader it is my duty to oversee the day to day running of
the team and making sure that deadlines are met and all
the departments continue to function together.
This year we are striving to show that despite our young
heritage, we continue to extend upon our previous experiences and are not afraid to be ambitious in our
efforts to innovate. We are therefore confident that 2012
will be a year of great success. I can only hope that my
efforts as Team Leader help push us in the right direction.

Team Ideology
We, Team SURTES consists of passionate and
enthusiastic students who aim to use all of their
accumulated knowledge and experience to produce a
competitive race car for the Formula Student event
each year.
Full commitment and unwavering dedication are
prerequisites to joining our team and as such, blood,
sweat, and tears are poured into the development of
each and every one of our cars from Day 1. We work
day and night in our pursuit of producing a car capable
of competing at the top end of the competition.
Formula Student is the perfect opportunity for talented
students to compete at an international level and
showcase to the world the quality of our graduates.
Our aim at Team SURTES is to form partnerships with
various companies to gain support, whether it is
financial or technical, and together we hope to thrive
and produce a race car capable of meeting the
challenges of Formula Student.
