2017 IS THE OFFICIAL YEAR FOR PROTECTED AREAS IN RUSSIA.

Protected areas cover 12,5% of the country territory.

The categories of natural territories with special International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status and protected areas in the Russian Federation

Categories I a and b: Strict Nature Reserve and Wilderness Area —high degree of intactness, full protection

Category II: National Park —ecosystem protection, may include tourist infrastructure and visitation

Category III: Natural Monument or Feature — protection of important natural monuments

Category IV: Habitat/Species Management Area — protection through traditional management approaches

Category V: Protected Landscape/ Seascape — opportunities for recreation and tourism

Category VI: Protected area with sustainable use of natural resources — conservation and sustainable use can be mutually beneficial

State nature reserves including biosphere reserves: areas where is preserved natural condition.Economic and other activities are completely prohibited (except for described cases in the Federal law on protected areas).

National parks: two types of areas are included: 1) where any kind of activity is prohibited (except for described cases in the Federal law on protected areas); 2) where economic and other activities are limited which also provided a heritage preservation of environmental, cultural objects and provided opportunities for recreation.

Natural monuments: unique, irreplaceable ecological, scientific, cultural and aesthetic values. There are including objects of natural and artificial origin in feature.

State nature zakazniks (from the Russian zakaz - order, reserve): a type of protected areas with particular importance for the conservation or restoration of nature areas or their components. State nature zakazniks are divided into different profiles.

Natural parks: these protected areas are promoted for ecological, cultural and recreation purposes.Based on this a prohibitions and restrictions are established on economic and other activities.

Dendrological parks and botanical gardens: a type of protected areas for specialist plant collections for the conservation of plant diversity.
