RESPECT LIFE

The Respect Life Committee offers its sincere thanks to the Knights of Co-lumbus for their contribution to the Eat for Life Fundraiser to support the Waller Pregnancy Care Center.

Thanks also to Patsy Marburger and the Catholic Daughters, as well as to both the Spanish and English choirs for their participation in the upcoming Change for Life baby bottle fundraiser to support the Waller Pregnancy Care Center. The drive takes place between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Call 936-648-1779 to request bottles. It is never too late.

Many thanks also to parishioners who supported babies and mothers by dining at Eat for Life locations throughout our community. Your support is appreciated!

A parish wide baby shower was held on Sunday, May 22nd. Donations of diapers and other ba-by items are appreciated.

Start planning now to form a team of friends for the October 22 Walk for Life. Your team does

not even have to walk, just gather together a donation for the Waller Pregnancy Care Center.

But walking is more fun! Join in this great cause to support the lives of mothers and babies

through the age of one year.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

From Fr. David: The week of May 9th I attended the Priests convocation in Galveston. Some call it a retreat, I call it

a workshop. I figure any event where I have to do something more than pray or sleep – it’s a workshop. But it was a wonderful time to get away with fellow priests in fraternity and learn a little something new. This years theme was Marriage and Family: United in Love and Mercy. The Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano who is Bishop of Bridgeport CT, gave the main talk in light of the recent Synod on the Family. His talk gave all of us priests a deeper sense of where we are at with our married couples in our respective parishes. How are we walking with and effective with those who are preparing for, and continuing in their marriage? I think of this question in light of our own census of 1500 families and then realize there are parishes in Houston at over 14000 families. Pastors can be overwhelmed with a sense of being ineffective with such numbers but we do our best and know that we are NOT God; just His helpers.

There was a ton of food for thought at the convocation in regard to Marriage in the life of the parish and I was grateful for the opportuni-

ty to be there.

We were also able to kick off the convocation with Vespers at the St. Marys Cathedral Basilica in Galveston. We took two buses to get there from the hotel and the bus driver tried to drop us off at two different protestant churches. Nice try! We made it and received our indulgence for walking through the designated doors of Mercy.

Please do not forget about the Doors of Mercy this year. In accord with Misericordiae vultus, the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, paragraph 3, Cardinal DiNardo has de-creed that a Holy Door be opened at the following churches, which will serve also as pilgrimage sites during the Holy Year:

I’m Interested in Knowing About the Catholic Church

Jesus said, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and

of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have com-manded you.” (1)

Of course, you and I could stand on a street corner trying to evangelize every passerby. However at the end

of the day, how many converts would we have taught “to observe all that I have commanded you”? Zero to

none, would be my bet!

By contrast, if someone approached you, saying “I’m interested in knowing about the Catholic Church; can

you answer a few questions?”; I believe that you would respond exactly as Jesus instructed us?

At Saint Katherine Drexel Parish, our responses to, “I’m interested in knowing about the Catholic Church,”

includes INQUIRY, the initial portion of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). I know from experi-

ence, that INQUIRY is much nearer to Jesus’ instruction to us than evangelizing on a street corner could ev-

er be!

INQUIRY consists of a Journey of Faith through 12 topics, including: What Do Catholics Believe?; The

Meaning of the Mass; The Bible; The Saints; Mary; and seven more. These are presented during two ses-

sions per month using well-prepared handout materials, but are primarily a conversation between an inquirer

(s) and a SKD parishioner, in the course of which inquirers discern their decision to move forward in RCIA or,

perhaps “not at this time”.

That doesn’t sound hard to do, does it? May I invite you to explore this opportunity to follow Jesus’ instruc-

tion? It’s as easy as sitting-in during an INQUIRY session, to listen and observe. INQUIRY facilitators are

not religious educators, no special skill or training is needed, because this work can be accomplished by any

faithful Catholic. This work can be accomplished by you!

Sessions are scheduled on the first and third Tuesday evenings of each month. Just call me to say you wish

to listen and observe, and I will make copies of the handout materials for your visit. Later we can discuss

any questions you may have about serving as a SKD facilitator.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to our newly initiated Catholics. At the Easter Vigil on March 26, 2016, Rebecca

Gonzalez, Victor Grijalva, Cesar Macias, Anthony Ramirez and Maximo Ramirez were fully initiated

and received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. We welcome them to the Ro-

man Catholic Church. A special thank you to the welcoming committee for the nice reception.

On April 30 at the 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Mass, two adults celebrated the Sacrament of First Eucharist. Their next step

was the Sacrament of Confirmation to be celebrated in a couple of weeks.

Every year over 1000 adults within the Archdiocese celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation at parishes designated by

the Bishop. On May 15, Pentecost Sunday, 9 of our adults celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation at one of the des-

ignated parishes. Congratulations!

On the weekend of May 21 and 22, approximately 100 of our children and youth celebrated the Sacrament of First Eu-charist. They were assigned a specific Mass on these days. Congratulations to all! Thank you to the Catholic Daugh-ters who honored them with a reception after each celebration.

WITH GRATITUDE

Throughout the year there are many people (too numerous to mention) that volunteer their services to the children and youth of our parish. Among these people are the catechists and help-ers for CCE, Sacrament prepara-tions, RCIA dismissals, Quinceñera preparation, and adult faith formation; those who served at our Sacrament and Quinceñera celebrations and those who pre-pared and hosted the receptions for the celebrations; the many who donated and/or prepared meals for our high school retreats and senior graduation breakfast; and those who participated in fundraisers and donated in some way to our programs. A very big thank you to all of you for a job well done. Praise and thanksgiving to our Lord, Jesus Christ for all of you.

PRAY WITH YOUR CHILDREN

Pope Francis speaks passionately about making time for prayer in the family. He stated, “There are children who

have not learned to make the Sign of the Cross! But you, mother, father, teach your child to pray, to make the Sign of

the Cross: this is a lovely task for mothers and fathers.”

Led by the Holy Spirit, the Church is focused on the family these days. The Church is seeking effective and loving

ways to accompany families and to help them fall in love with Jesus Christ. Prayer is the way we discover and nur-

ture that love. Family prayer entrusts our hearts to one another and to God.

Many parents want to respond to Pope Francis’ call to pray with their children, but simply don’t know where to start.

Prayer requires dependence. Prayer is the reason Jesus presented a little child as our spiritual role model. “Amen, I

say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it” (Mark 10:15). Children depend

on others for absolutely everything, and they accept that state of affairs gracefully.

Perhaps the lack of family prayer is a symptom of a larger problem: a lack of trust. Trust terrifies most of us. We

find it difficult to ask for help, to rely radically on God’s providence. Prayer helps. Prayer connects us with God and

invites us to pay attention to the ways God labors for us in the world. And when we trust God, we begin to trust our

family members and neighbors too.

St. Paul says, “We know that all things work for good for those who love God” (Romans 8:28). Prayer cultivates

trust in our hearts so we really can know this. Families who pray together grow more comfortable with the idea that

everything coming our way – the blessings as well as the obstacles – can help us live in God’s grace.

The most courageous act parents perform is entrusting their children to others. The more intimately we know God,

the more glorious it is to help our children learn to pray, freeing them to live as beloved children of God.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

Throughout Scripture the Holy Spirit is both a gift of Jesus and the Spirit of Jesus himself. In the New Testament, this

Spirit of God descended on Jesus at his baptism (Matt. 3:16). On Pentecost the Spirit descended on Jesus’ followers

to give them power, as he promised (Luke 24:49).

We call Pentecost the birthday of the Church. The Day of Pentecost completes the Easter Season. Through the gift of

the Holy Spirit, the disciples were able to understand the meaning of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection.

The end of the Easter Season opens the door to the liturgical Season of Ordinary Time – the period from Pentecost to

the First Sunday of Advent. During this period we celebrate each Sunday as a “little Easter,” commemorating Jesus’

Resurrection. Another focus of this period is the Church as it grows in faith and virtue through the inspiration of the

Holy Spirit. As a people formed by Christ’s victory over death and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Church applies the

mysteries of faith to our daily lives.

GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are of two kinds: communal and personal. The Spirit gives gifts to help build up the com-

munity of the faithful: speaking wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, the dis-

cernment of spirits, various kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues (1 Cor 12). In general, these gifts help

strengthen the community in faith, hope and love.

The personal gifts of the Holy Spirit, traditionally seven in number are wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel,

fortitude, piety and fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:1-2). They help an individual live the life of a disciple.

FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT

St. Paul also describes the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gen-

tleness, self-control (Gal 5). To this list, Catholics often add “goodness, modesty and chastity,” based on the Latin

Vulgate translation by St. Jerome. The fruits of the Holy Spirit become evident in our lives as we consent to the

Spirit’s action within us.

With April showers come May flowers, looks like we should all have quite a few bouquets from all this rain. Hope that all is well with every-one. I know that a few of our pa-

rishioners had some bad luck, we want to keep them in our prayers. Our ladies have been very busy since the February fish fry’s. Seven of our members attended a District Meeting in Tomball on April 2. The day began with Mass at 8:30, followed by breakfast and a meet-ing. Each Court made a report of things they had done during the past two years. On April 23, Dr. Mary Hawkins, Cheryl Thomas & I attended a Past Regents luncheon at the Monu-ment Inn, in La Porte, Texas. We also have baby bottles for Life is Precious that we are putting money into for the Waller Pregnancy Care Center. In May we had 23 people attend our annual Mary Conference here at St. Katherine Drexel with Brad Cooper as guest speaker. May 21st & 22nd will be First Communion at the Satur-day and Sunday Masses and we will honor the com-municants with a reception in Building A after the Spanish Mass on Saturday and the two Masses on Sunday. We will also honor two graduating seniors this year with a $500 scholarship each to Jacob Ber-lin and Kyle Bookout for their outstanding job here at St. Katharine Drexel, as well as Waller High School. Congratulations to both. June we will celebrate Priest & Clergy Appreciation Day on June 12th on the back porch here at St Kath-erine Drexel, along with the Welcome Committee, Altar Society, & Catholic Daughters.Baskets will be placed on the tables at the back of the church two weeks prior to this event with cards so everyone can pick one up to help make this a great celebration. Officers for the years 2016-2018 are Regent Patsy Marburger, Vice Regent Renee Laake, and Record-ing Secretary Rosemary Spurling, Treasurer Mary Lee Page and Financial Secretary Cheryl Thomas; good luck to each one of these ladies. The Altar Society of St. Katharine Drexel has been busy

these first few months of 2016 planning the annual

luncheon, selecting officers for the next year, awarding

a scholarship, and participating in Church activities.

meal, along with a style show of

impressive models and lovely

attire. The Knights of Colum-

bus hall was decorated in a ro-

deo theme, complete with sad-

dles, Western prints, and boot

centerpieces. A silent

auction sported an im-

pressive variety of items,

ranging from crosses to

bar stools and from ro-

deo tickets to a statue of

the Blessed Virgin

Mother. Proceeds from this year’s luncheon were dedi-

cated to the House of

Help. This event was en-

joyed by all, and we are

already looking forward

to next year’s luncheon.

At our April meeting

committee members presented a slate of candidates for

the offices of president and secretary. Mary Hawkins

will be president in September, and Renee Laake will

take over as secretary. We have planned a meal for the

May meeting, with installation of these two ladies to

follow.

Church activities for Altar Society included maintaining

altar linens, stripping and recovering the altar during

Holy Week, attending the Crowning of Mary in April,

and providing desserts for St. Katharine’s Day.

St. Katharine’s Day Celebration—March 6, 2016

On Sunday, March 06, we held our annual St. Katharine Drexel Day, it was the best one yet.

The weather was fantastic, the food was great, and the games and art exhibit were phenomenal.

The food being served represented countries such as Poland, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, and Columbia as well as many others.

We had eighteen contestants out of the twenty-five that had signed up to compete.

It was great to see all of the Ministries and organizations that came out to support our annual function. The Altar Society,

Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters, Kate’s Kitchen, our Religious Education Staff and our Youth Group.

I want to personally thank Roberto and Maria Rodriquez and Jo Ann Babbitt and Patricia Castro for all of their help organiz-

ing this event and seeing to it that it ran well. Be sure to thank them when you see them.

Flanked by members of the Altar Society, President Kathleen Cole (left of center) presented a check for $3,120 to Sidney Chipman, Director of Hempstead’s House of Help, on Sunday Morning, April 17, in St. Katharine Drexel Church. The Altar Society is a service organization composed of Catholic women of the parish. The funds cam from their recent style show luncheon, which was held at the KC hall and well attended by area women. The House of Help is a non-denominational non-profit 501©(3) food pantry, resource center, and thrift shop located in Hempstead. It is staffed by volunteers who are dedi-cated to assisting and supporting families residing within the HISD community who are in need or who are experiencing a crises situation. The funds are committed to upgrading the air conditioning unit at the HOH. The new a/c unit was generous-ly acquired by Doug Holloman of Holloman Service Co. in Hempstead, through the Lennox Corporation.

They practice every Wednesday at 6:45 pm in the Chapel. This choir is a bilingual group - English and Spanish.

The requirements are: Minimum age of 7; Must be able to read; Must be willing to learn to sing in English, Spanish and some Latin; A parent and/or guardian MUST at-tend all practices with child.

April High School Retreat

Our high school youth attended a retreat in April run by our very own high school youth. During this retreat, they learned about God’s love for us while being challenged on loving God back. There were many fun activities and games to break the ice but at the same time many talks and prayer activities to help deepen and grow their faith. The youth have grown so much; from our first retreat having only 30 retreatants and 7 team members, to having 50 retreatants and 20 team members. This retreat would not have been possible without several people: Emi-gdio Hinojosa, Heriberto Perez, Noel Aguilar, Maria Romero, Vicky Spence, Flor Yanez, Fabian Yanez Sr., Mrs. Jimenez, and the youth team. Their effort, time, and work made this retreat the best one we have ever had. We hope that our youth program continues to grow and that the support from the parish community also grows. Our next high school retreat will be in November, so please look for that information as time gets closer. Thank you once again to all of the team and to the parish for your continued support. 2016 SKD GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 2016 SKD Golf Tournament was played on Sunday, April 24th at the Legendary Oaks course, and featured Fr. David Harris as the celebrity golfer. Fr. David played in a foursome with Mike Dowling, John Kiker, and Paul Kiker. Fourteen teams played in the event. The tournament, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, benefits St. Katharine Drexel Parish exclusively, and this year’s event profited about $9,000 for the

church.

The winning team was composed of Bob Nichols, Dennis Brown, Darren Howard, and Anthony Hicks. Other winners were Dave Bergquist in the putting contest, Matt Rush for the longest drive, and Dennis Brown for closest to the hole. Prizes were presented by Johnny Cole, chairman

of the tournament.

sumptuous dinner to end the day.

Sponsored by parishioner and KC Mud Gibbs, the PPI team composed of Matt Rush, Wade Hill, Dane Morris, and captain Mason Gibbs. This young team doggedly played

through the afternoon rain and finished all 18 holes, near the top of the 14-team field.

KNIGHTS REPLACE BENCHES

Many thanks to the Knights who built new benches for our office and classroom walkways; they

replaced four aging red benches with seven shiny new blue ones. We owe a debt of gratitude to

Tom Brown, Jack Gibbs, Gene Flory, and Doug Plummer for all they do for our parish.
