Sometimes, it feels like all we do is assess. It’s as if every day is a test day, or we’re required to show a track record for what we’re doing in the classroom. Well, I think it’s time to reassess the idea of assessments!

I want you to really think about WHY, WHAT, and HOW you should be assessing in order to glean valuable information long before the unit has actually ended.

Teaching requires us to be constantly adaptive. Think about a pilot guiding his plane toward its destination by planning the route, taking frequent readings, and then making careful adjustments along the way in response to the current weather conditions—this is what we need to practice in our classrooms.

We can’t wait for the end result to determine whether instructional adjustments are needed. In today’s classroom, we have to focus on the learning that takes place during teaching and make the necessary adjustments along the way. Formative Assessment is about making your teaching contingent upon your students’ responses. It’s about carefully choosing, and even differentiating, a route ahead of time—and taking readings along the way. It’s about practical, simple steps that you can take BEFORE the instructional period ends to ensure your students understand and achieve.

An Invitation from Jennifer

Research has shown that short-cycle formative assessment is the most effective practice and makes the biggest impact on student learning. In a nutshell, short-cycle formative assessment urges teachers to gather information from their teaching day-by-day, minute-by-minute. That’s what this training is all about.

During this workshop, you’ll learn how to determine what your students already know, what they need to know, and what kind of instruction will prove most effective. You’ll leave with a new understanding of formative assessment and a host of easy-to-implement practices that will make a real, measurable difference in your classroom.

“If we want our students to thrive in the complex, unpredictable world of the 21st century,” writes formative assessment expert Dylan William, “we must concentrate on increasing educational achievement by increasing the quality of the teachers in our schools.” And that begins by incorporating regular formative assessment into the classroom. You’ll see your instruction strengthened and student learning improved—during the learning process.

Workshop Overview

Make Instant AdjustmentsMany teachers fear that devoting time to check for understanding along the way comes at a sacrifice of the curriculum and the ability to cover more, more, more. In reality, formative assessment provides the opportunity for teachers to make adjustments to their instruction minute-by-minute, day-by-day and allows for students to engage more meaningfully with the information. You’ll be able to determine what your students already know, what they need to know, and what kind of instruction will prove most effective.

Improve the Learning EnvironmentIn this workshop, we’ll investigate how to create the most effective learning environment through the use of: classroom questioning, learning intentions and success criteria, feedback, collaborative and cooperative learning, and self-regulated learning. You’ll leave with not only the techniques for effective classroom formative assessment, but also an understanding of how to use them to improve teacher practice and student achievement.
