Foreword

Once again, the Mediterranean, that ancient cradle of civilisation, has become the centre of international attention as new political, social and cultural realities struggle through the pain of birth. A mixed sense of hopes and uncertainty crosses a region affected by historical democratic changes in the South, but also by a deep, economic crisis in the North. For the first time, the values of dignity, dialogue and democracy are shared by millions, opening a new and promising era where scores of citizens are willing to take in their hands their common destiny. However, this values are contested, on both shores, by regressive forces which are threatening the possibility of living together and respecting each other in our cities and around the Mediterranean. The Anna Lindh Mediterranean Forum, which will count with your valuable contribution, takes place in such a challenging context, amid appealing opportunities, which should be leveraged, but also social and cultural risks which need to be identified and faced by the action of all of us.

A major shift is required that emphasises dialogue and civil engagement based upon shared democratic values. Cultural diversity, human rights, freedom of speech and the worth of the individual must be valued and up-held.

They should be part of any intercultural strategy and process of dialogue across the Mediterranean. They feed the Anna Lindh programmes and activities and they will cross all the debates and exchanges of the Anna Lindh Forum.

With the support:

In association with:

Media Partners:

Citizens of the all region have a lot to learn from each other, and it is by sharing their experiences and dreams that lessons can be passed on about how to overcome their common challenges. Doing together, people of different origins, conditions and beliefs will know better each other and will share the values on which the future of Euro-Mediterranean region should be built.

Based on the commitment of its partners, the Union for the Mediterranean needs to be boosted by the active participation of its Citizens. That is the main purpose of our Forum: contributing to feed the gap of mutual ignorance and resisting the regressive forces in the region through the mobilisation of its citizens. In collaboration with our partners, we facilitated the convergence of the Forum with a Meeting of Regional Authorities and a Summit of Heads of the National Parliaments of the region. This coincidence constitutes a unique momentum which should be leveraged.

The challenge of living together in our societies based upon shared universal values and the objective of building a stable and safe Mediterranean of modernity, diversity and freedom is of such importance that it requires today more than ever, bridging institutions and societies.Thats is why the Anna Lindh Forum, convoked as a gathering of citizens committed with these values and goals, can be a landmark in the historical process of making possible the renaissance of a creative and inclusive mediterranean giving sense, legitimacy and effectiveness to the perspective of a common destiny in the Region.
