“ Breathing out the replenisher of life, filling our bodies with grace;Ignored by those with selfish eyes,Yet precious to the human race

Forest provides nutritionand serves the mother role-----Even the air that's neededcomes from her heart and soul”

-Leonard C. Mayer

In simple words,Forests are complex ecosystem in which trees are the dominant life-form.

The Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) has set up the following criteria to designate an area as a forest :• trees (5 m), • at least 10 per cent crown cover (canopy

density deter mined by estimating the area of ground shaded by the crown of the trees)

• Minimum forest area size (0.5 hectares).

What is meant by the word Forest

Page 5: Forests nature at our service
Page 6: Forests nature at our service

A country should have at least 25% of its total land area. Bangladesh has only 6%

Between 1990 and 2010, our country lost an average of 2,600 ha or 0.17% per year. In total, that amounts up 3.5% of its forest cover

Page 7: Forests nature at our service

Number of trees in Sunderbans

The Sundarbans

But the total area as well as the number of trees per unit area is decreasing rapidly

constitutes 51% of the total reserved forest estate of Bangladesh

contributes about 41% of total forest revenue

accounts for about 45% of all timber and fuel wood output of the country

Deforestation: A Curse to Mother Earth

• Every year, 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed

• Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface

• But now they cover a mere 6%

• Experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years

Environmental Services of Forests

• Helps to mitigate Climate Change

• Act as a Carbon sink and Supply oxygen

• Maintain balance in temperature

• guide wind direction

• Influence precipitation

• Maintain Biodiversity

Page 13: Forests nature at our service

The estimated rise in the sea level which could be disastrous to humankind can be minimized if forest cover of the world van be increased

Page 14: Forests nature at our service

Tropical forests remove around 4.8 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere each year.

Trees in tropical forests absorb nearly a fifth of the CO2 released by burning fossil fuels.

Page 15: Forests nature at our service

The other 60% comes from plants not found in tropical rainforests, as well as polar icecaps, water and minerals such as metal oxides, silicates, and carbonates.

Roughly 40% of the world's oxygen is produced by tropical rainforests.

Page 16: Forests nature at our service

Forests are home to 80% of the terrestrial biodiversity

• Experts estimate 137

plant, animal and insect

species are lost every

single day due to

rainforest deforestation.

• That equates to 50,000

species a year.

Page 17: Forests nature at our service

Economic Services of Forests

• Employment

• Forest-related recreation and

tourism

• Forest-based manufacturing

• Non-wood forest products

• spices, gums and dyes

• Food supply

• Timber production

Page 18: Forests nature at our service

Health• 25% of Western

pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients

• 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources.

Page 19: Forests nature at our service

Global Trade in Forest Products

• Approximately 1.6 billion people rely on forest for their livelihood

• Total Global trade in forests products doubled between 1999 & 2008

Global trade of all forest products

People are taking these services from our forests...

But .....See what

their reckless use have

done to our forest

Now...let’s go to Australia

with Mr. Canga Roo

and see what’s

happening there

Page 26: Forests nature at our service

Hi! I’m Roo...see my region also has

various types of forest...and they serves human in

numerous ways....

Page 27: Forests nature at our service

Forestry is Australia's Second Largest Manufacturing Industry

forestry and wood products employ over

86 000 people and have a turnover of

around A$15 billion a year

13,400 people are directly employed in the forestry and logging

sector

In 2004-05, exports of Australian

forest products totalled A$2.1

million

Net forest change in Australia(1973–2004) But...these extensive

use is destroying the ability of forests

to re-grow!

Page 30: Forests nature at our service

Hi, this is Wolfy! I come

from North America!

It has 33.0% forest cover area of it’s total land

area.

Page 31: Forests nature at our service

My forest is a source

of recreation, food and sooooo many things

my region

Page 33: Forests nature at our service

hey!, Wolfy!I live in the

same climatic region as

yours!.......EUROPE!!!

I face the situation as

yours..Lets go to

africaAnd see what’s

happening there

People make consumer

goods using resources from

our forest

People cut down the

forest and turn them

into agricultural

land

Page 38: Forests nature at our service

People are not thankful and

they are destroying our

forest like yours......

But ...my home

Page 42: Forests nature at our service

Hi! My name is Seal!

I come from an icy region

where there is no forest or trees...

Yes I’m talking about

Antarctica..

Page 43: Forests nature at our service

U must be wondering....wh

y I’m here to attend the meeting on

forests...Let me explain...

Page 44: Forests nature at our service

U can see that the ice in my homeland is

melting and the surface is

breaking down..

Page 45: Forests nature at our service

the Antarctic Peninsula alone has decreased

by 27,000 square

kilometres in the past 50

years

anticipated sea level rises threaten the numbers of native

animal species including emperor

penguins, humpback whales and several fish

species

Page 46: Forests nature at our service

Oh Human.......!!!! save the forest

Save us &

save your self

What We Can Do?

Page 50: Forests nature at our service

"What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another."

-  Gandhi
