Forestry Outlook
Sustainable forestry has a long history in Chapleau and maintains a
profitable outlook for the future. Tembec, Inc. (TSX: TMB), the largest local
employer, directly employs roughly 150 people, and supports an additional
100 indirect jobs in the forestry sector. Tembec’s main product is random-
length softwood lumber, but the company also operates the Chapleau Co-
Generation Plant which opened in 1986 as Canada’s first wood-fired co-
generation facility. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF)
has Chapleau District offices located in the community to lead local forest
management and fire management efforts.
Industry partners are currently working with aboriginal and community
stakeholders to consider options for transition from a single entity
Sustainable Forest Licence to an Enhanced Sustainable Forest Licence
(eSFL).
Chapleau is located at the heart of the Martel Forest (Sustainable Forest
Licence # 550390) which was formed in 2006 to combine the Superior Forest
and the J.E. Martel Forest. The Martel Forest is a mixed wood forest nearly
1.2 million hectares in size.
Competitive Advantages
Forestry in Chapleau benefits from several competitive advantages:
• A well trained workforce with experience working in the forestry industry
• Local options for re-purposing waste wood
• Affordable housing and high quality of life
• Quick access to domestic and international markets
• Proximity to Canadian Pacific Railway’s transcontinental railway
• Chapleau is just over 250 kilometers (about 160 miles) from the US market.
The forestry sector boasts many
other entrepreneurial endeavours
including the North Country Log
Homes, True North Timber and
Niska North cedar sawmill.
The local forestry industry has room
to grow in producing non-timber and
value added forest products.
Chapleau’s access to both hardwood
and softwood timber opens the door
for a wide range of value-added
forestry ventures.

emissions by 84% since 1990, and
the use of biomass for energy
eliminates waste, lowers fossil fuel
consumption, and supplies green
energy to the grid.
